“A PERFECT OASIS FROM THE BEACH”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

We would go back in a heartbeat. Three wonderful nights, beautiful room facing the Paseo, delicious breakfast and the best gift shop in town. There was a festival one night that afforded us a window into local urban entertainment, regional food and a friendly atmosphere. The owner has assembled a collection of Middle eastern artifacts that add a perfect touch to the exquisite original wall painting and 'jungle' feel of the atrium. The colors of the walls, the blending of furnishings and a staff that was helpful could not be matched. Only glitch was a somewhat hard to find garage.

Room Tip: We had the Jr. suite. I can't say enough wonderful things.

I came across this hotel while I was renting nearby in Merida. It is Gorgeous! Hand painted murals, a tropical garden, a private pool and an exquisite restaurant. One is transported the minute you walk through the large welcoming doors. When guest arrived the first place I take them is to Tala the restaurant inside the Casa San Angel. The owner is Persian who has been in Mexico since she was young. Tala means gold in in Persian and whoever is cooking there is doing a "golden" job. Part of the charm is the wonderful, gracious owner who floats around and quietly watches over things. She has a wonderful gift shop there called 100% Mexico with the most interesting crafts and silk scarfs from across Mexico and reasonably priced. I did not stay in the hotel but was there many times in my 5 week stay. The next time I come to Merida on a shorter stay..I will be at the Hotel Casa San Angel. Did I mention, the hotel is located in the perfect spot to walk to the Main Plaza and all the other sites. It is located at the foot of the Passeo de Montejo a great place for walking and on Sundays to rent bicycles. Enjoy!

On our third trip to Merida, we decided to stay at San Angel. We had visited the gift shop, restaurant etc before anthe most attentive you could loved the ambiance. What a wonderful experience, we spent two nights and will return next year for a repeat. The rooms are awesome, I cannot say enough good things about the staff. Attentive, and always there to help us out. The owner and her family are wonderful people. We love San Angel and everyone associated with it.

We stayed in the Casa San Angel for two nights in January. Although Merida has a grid system we had a little difficulty finding the hotel as the entrance is in a square off the street. However, once found it proved to have been a great choice. The reception was friendly and efficient. The hotel is decorated and furnished to a very high standard throughout. Althought the hotel is small the bedrooms are lage and comfortable, and there are the full range of services you'd expect frm a larger hotel.. The restaraunt provided a good range of food throughout the day. The hotel is in the centre of town and meant we could walk everywhere.

Finally the whole operation is overseen by the owner who with her staff takes great care to ensure that her guests get the most from their viisit to Merida.

We stayed two nights at Casa Angel in mid-March on a 6 day private tour of Yucatan organized by the excellent Balamkaan Travel Agency (based in Merida). See also my separate comments on the agency on Trip advisor. The hotel is great just a few blocks away from all interesting sites downtown on one hand (the cathedral, the Plaza, the house of Governor, the excellent Museum of Modern Art) the Museum of Anthropology on the other hand and the Monument of the flags. We had a very large room (two queen beds) on the top floor at the angle of two extremely quiet streets at night. The decoration of both room and bathroom is nice and inventive with all local materials (wood, tiles etc.) and warm colours. Beds are very comfortable. All rooms are around a large and beautiful patio with lots of plants a fountain and two friendly parrots in a cage. Breakfast was à la carte and included in our arrangement (the only criticism is that it does not open before 7.30). Make sure to stay at least one day and one night in Merida, if you visit Yucatan, the town deserves it and is a refreshing stop (with lots of history about the colonial times of Yucatan) between the visits of Mayan sites. Our agency, Balamkaan made a great job in arranging our private tour where we could visit lots of sites off the beaten tracks and outside of the rush hours (we were almost alone when visiting Chichen Itza and Uxmal!). Their logo “travel with consciousness” is fully deserved, as all hotel reservations went smoothly, the guiding by Luis Quijano and Zazil Hernandez was excellent, precise and documented to the very last developments in archeological findings, and the ratio quality/price could not be beaten.

Room Tip: We had a corner room, top floor, nr 104 if I remember well
