Villa La Bella was absolutely the highlight of my husband and my recent trip to Isla. We were celebrating our 20th Anniversary, and this was the perfect place. Curtis is an amazing host, helping us with everything we needed and even packing breakfast for us on the two mornings when we left early for boat trips. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and immaculate. There was nothing better than relaxing in the pool or hammock every afternoon with a fresh piña colada from the bar. We stayed in the oceanside palapa and loved it! Even though it is August, we would open up all the windows and the ocean breeze kept us cool. Not to mention, the view from Palapa 1 is spectacular! The room was also incredibly clean--we never saw one bug the whole time even though it is definitely hot and tropical! The bed was very comfortable with quality linens and big comfy pillows, and we loved having the hammock in the room to relax in.

I haven't been back to Isla Mujeres since my original trip in 1991, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the crowds and development. Whereas the town used to be a quiet village with sand streets, now it is filled with cheap souvenir shops and bars. Playa Norte is also smaller than I remember and packed to the gills with chairs, umbrellas, people, bars, boats, and blasting music. It is still a pretty beach with crystal water, but we were so glad to be staying in the quiet mid-island area. If parties and people are your scene, you might like it, but we like nature and came to swlm with the whale sharks, so we really didn't like the town area at all.

Fortunately, the area around Villa La Bella is quiet and you can walk to several nice restaurants. Curtis also told us where to get a taxi nearby, and taxis are cheap, so we passed on the pricy golf carts. He also recommended a Cuban restaurant off the beaten path, and it was really great!

If you are looking for a relaxing stay in a beautiful place, Villa la Bella is your spot. It's in a local neighborhood, so you will get a little taste of what Isla was like before mass tourism. Also, the owners are friendly and helpful. You will have everything you need and leave relaxed and refreshed!

Room Tip: If you like views and rustic beauty, choose Palapa 1. We thought it was by far the best!

There is a reason why Villa La Bella has so many glowing reviews. My husband and I stayed for nine nights, and we wholeheartedly concur with the many positive things said about Villa La Bella. In an effort not to simply repeat what others have said, I will try to add new observations. But first, I want to reiterate that Ashley and Curtis are wonderful people. Ashley is one of the most gracious, charming people I have ever met, and Curtis cooks amazing breakfasts and is full of helpful tips. For instance, he told us that we could easily catch taxis two blocks west of Villa La Bella. As a result, we didn't have to rent a golf cart or scooter even though we were in the middle of the island.

There are two very good restaurants--Mango Cafe and Caribbean Brisas--within walking distance, so you don't have to go downtown to enjoy good food. There is also a market across the street from Mango Cafe that carries everything from freshly-squeezed orange juice to bar soap, and there is also a very good ice cream/paleta shop. We had the coconut paletas (Popsicles) which were handmade with real coconut chunks.

We stayed in the middle poolside room and even though we had people on either side of us, we didn't hear a peep from them due to the concrete walls. The sliding glass door also does a very good job of blocking out sound, and we slept more deeply than we have on any other vacation. In addition, the bathroom is spacious with a beautiful alabaster sink, and there was plenty of hot water at all times.

In case any of you are more experienced snorkelers or strong swimmers, know that it is possible to swim and snorkel in the ocean in front of Villa La Bella. We snorkeled almost every day and saw amazing sea life including a school of stingrays, a loggerhead turtle, lion fish, eels, Angel fish, and barracuda. There is a small beach below Villa La Bella with a sandy bottom and easy entry. The reef is about 100 yards from shore (look for the dark line running parallel to the shore), and we found the area between Villa La Bella and the church just north of it to be particularly lively. Having said this, please know we snorkeled in July when the sea was relatively calm; based on everything I hear, this side of the island is too rough to swim in during the winter months. Also, the reef ranges from about 15-25 feet below water, so you do have to be comfortable swimming without being able to touch the ground. Lastly, note that the current can be strong at times, so you do want to pay attention to which direction the current is flowing.

This was our third time on Isla, and it was easily our best stay. Curtis and Ashley are the heart of Villa La Bella; it is because of the love and care they have for the B and B and their guests that Villa La Bella is the top-ranked B and B on the island. We were sad to leave and look forward to the day we'll be able to go back. Thank you, Ashley and Curtis, for enabling us to have a fun, relaxing, rejuvenating vacation!

My husband and I just returned from a 4 night stay at Villa la bella. First, the place is immaculately clean and the grounds are impeccably maintained. The views are beyond beautiful. The hosts, Ashley and Curtis, are welcoming and accommodating. We initially reserved the Palapa suite #1 and while the room is unique (swinging bed, hammock mid room) with gorgeous ocean views, the lack of a/c turned out to be more than this city girl could handle. In a blink of an eye and without fuss, Ashley quickly readied one of their poolside rooms and we were efficiently moved there. Curtis makes an amazing 3 course breakfast in the mornings that rivals the authentic fare found elsewhere on the island. We had a wonderful time at VLB and hope to visit again soon!

Room Tip: if choose palapa room, be prepared for possible high humidity (and bugs)

This is my go-to place on the Isla. Ashley & Curtis are the best hosts! I've stayed at other places on the Isla and hands down, this is the place to stay.

What's not to love? (1) NO kids, 18+ only. (2) Curtis makes amazing breakfasts; something different every day. (3) Excellent bar with all drinks made from scratch - no pre-made mixers. My favs are the blended mojitos & piña coladas. (4) Only 6 rooms. Even at full capacity, you won't feel crowded. (5) Amazing ocean views, a constant ocean breeze, and a beach that's never crowded. (6) The perfect place for a late afternoon nap - either floating on a raft in the pool, on a hammock, or under the shaded pergola.

I dream about this place for days after I return home. You will too.

We left Villa la Bella on May 5th and we just booked a return flight for July 4th. Life has been a little hectic and what better place to go for a getaway from life's stressors! We have been coming to VLB since 2011. This is our second year to come twice in the same year. Curtis and Ashley are great hosts! We used to wonder why anyone would go back to the same place year after year but once we visited VLB we understood completely! Try it, you'll love it!
