Villa La Bella was absolutely the highlight of my husband and my recent trip to Isla. We were celebrating our 20th Anniversary, and this was the perfect place. Curtis is an amazing host, helping us with everything we needed and even packing breakfast for us on the two mornings when we left early for boat trips. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and immaculate. There was nothing better than relaxing in the pool or hammock every afternoon with a fresh piña colada from the bar. We stayed in the oceanside palapa and loved it! Even though it is August, we would open up all the windows and the ocean breeze kept us cool. Not to mention, the view from Palapa 1 is spectacular! The room was also incredibly clean--we never saw one bug the whole time even though it is definitely hot and tropical! The bed was very comfortable with quality linens and big comfy pillows, and we loved having the hammock in the room to relax in.
I haven't been back to Isla Mujeres since my original trip in 1991, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the crowds and development. Whereas the town used to be a quiet village with sand streets, now it is filled with cheap souvenir shops and bars. Playa Norte is also smaller than I remember and packed to the gills with chairs, umbrellas, people, bars, boats, and blasting music. It is still a pretty beach with crystal water, but we were so glad to be staying in the quiet mid-island area. If parties and people are your scene, you might like it, but we like nature and came to swlm with the whale sharks, so we really didn't like the town area at all.
Fortunately, the area around Villa La Bella is quiet and you can walk to several nice restaurants. Curtis also told us where to get a taxi nearby, and taxis are cheap, so we passed on the pricy golf carts. He also recommended a Cuban restaurant off the beaten path, and it was really great!
If you are looking for a relaxing stay in a beautiful place, Villa la Bella is your spot. It's in a local neighborhood, so you will get a little taste of what Isla was like before mass tourism. Also, the owners are friendly and helpful. You will have everything you need and leave relaxed and refreshed!
