We had a great time participating in the Amazing Cozumel Race. Our mission for this excursion was to have fun. There were groups that ran the whole race but we wanted to experience some of the Cozumel area at a more leisurely pace. We came in 11th out of 16 teams. The best way to approach the race is to read the clues completely and understand exactly what you are looking for. The museum was challenging and we spent quite a bit of time in there finding our next clue. The cantina was our last stop and we were given drink tickets and had plenty of time to order lunch. I would recommend this excursion.

The 2 negative parts of this race based on other reviews were all true - it started late so we lost about an hour of our day waiting, and we didn’t get to keep the lanyard so if you don’t place first, second or third, you don’t get a nice souvenir. (If you place, you get a medal).

In addition, I’d say it needs changing up. Too many locals know the race too well so we didn’t even have a chance to find our way or get answers ourselves for most clues. Even the guides gave too many hints when handing out clues (ie “ask a local. Look here’s one”). We had kids with us, so it was ok, but if I’d been only with adults or maybe teens, I’d have felt let down by the experience as this makes it too easy. Our day, there were 10 teams and the slowest was 2 hours and 4 minutes. They made a big deal about everyone being great, but I don’t think that’s it at all. They need to change it up.

The boat driver asked for tips and gave us the answer too which made that part less than fun.

All that negative aside, my kids had fun and we came in third so it was ok. I’d not recommend though.

We had 2 - 17 yr olds and 2 - 15 yr olds. All boys - they were somewhat hesitant when we told them what are planned excursion was. They had an absolute blast! We met at San Miguel church and 30 minutes later we started. Solving clues and puzzles to get to the finish. I cannot say how great our time was...and it was a great way to see a different part of Cozumel. The restaurant that we finished was great as well. (Both service and food- but can’t say name as it is part of the race). Would highly recommend for a group or family.

We have heard about this race for several years and people always had a great time. We were a group of four (the Nanaimo Bars!) and all of us ended up having a wonderful time running around Cozumel. The opposing teams were a mix of young/old, speedy and not so speedy, all with a "we're here for fun" attitude, and made for good competition. The clues were well done and provided the opportunity to see parts and places in Cozumel we might otherwise not have seen, or even known they were there.

And the locals were great, whether they were the "secret agents" connected with the race or just locals who obviously have become used to seeing half-crazed tourists running around their town. Many offered unsolicited advice on which way to go, and none of it erroneous.

At the end, the race provided a few drinks in a local bar and a celebration of the racers (we were all winners in our eyes) and the doling out of medals for third, second and first winners.

We highly recommend the race as a fun, group activity if your on Cozumel or Playa del Carmen (only a 45 minute ferry ride over).

Our only recommendation for the Amazing Race company is to either start accepting pesos (we are in Mexico after all) as payment for T-shirts or indicate on your website that any purchases are in US dollars only.
