“The 'Cuda Rules”
Reviewed 2 July 2011

I have stayed at The 'Cuda many times with my buddies on long weekend dive trips. If you want bang for the buck while diving and having a great time, then this is the place for you. The 'Cuda is not plush, its not fancy, its not high-profile. If you want all that spa-oriented stuff, The 'Cuda is not for you.

If you want a cool, laid back, CLEAN, diver-oriented place to stay that is in town and within walking distance to all the cantinas, then THE 'CUDA IS FOR YOU.

They have no problem with dive boats picking you up on their pier. The Mega store is across the street and all rooms have refrigerators...so you can load up on beer and snacks...no problem.

One bit of advice: Do not eat at the No Name Bar...I got deathly sick there last year. The bar is NOT owned by The 'Cuda...so dont say you were not warned.

I have been at the Hotel Barracuda since May 1st in Room 103. Absolutely, no sign of bed bugs during my stay. The room was very clean and is kept that way by a very efficient housekeeping staff. The hotel is located close to town. I have truly enjoyed the peace and quiet along with the ability to be able to walk into town. All of the staff has assisted me in every way possible. This is not my first stay. I have been coming here over twenty years and seen many changes over the years. The things that have remained consistant over the years has been the helpful staff, clean rooms and an excellent value. Cheri

This WAS my favorite place to stay in Cozumel. It's cheap, friendly, has a great location only a 3 minute walk from town, and a beautiful beachside pool/ restaurant. Albeit, it's a 2 of 5 star hotel, with the rooms sparse and basic. But it worked for the money.

HOWEVER..........

We've been going here for years. However, I'm scared to death to go back. The hotel is MASSIVELY infested with bedbugs (and ants and cockroaches). We found bedbugs in our mattresses, and numerous other guests found them, too. It was a focal point of discussion among guests by the pool.

BEDBUGS are a nightmare! First they bite and suck your blood while you sleep. Second, they get in your clothes and luggage. Third, they go with you in your clothes, dive gear, and luggage and then infest YOUR home!

We had to buy boxes of garbage bags in order to seal all of our luggage before getting in the car upon our return to our home airport AND change into clothes (prior to entering our car) that had been sprayed with insecticide and stored in ziplock baggies before we left Cozumel. Then, we had to systematically use heat and insecticides to decontaminate our clothing, dive gear, luggage, toiletries, etc. It took three evenings of work in order to make sure we didn't infest our homes. Everything had to be left outdoors on the back patio and treated one article at a time. We finally just threw a lot of things away that couldn't easily be decontaminated. We even had to treat the car after bringing our luggage home!

SO....if you go to this hotel, know the following: Upon entering the room, do not set your bag on the bed. First, grab a flashlight and EXTREMELY QUICKLY yank the sheets up from under the pillow and shine your flashlight at the mattress seams...look carefully...they are fast. One bedbug means there are a 1000 more you can't see (and even more eggs just waiting to hatch when you get back home). If you see one (or a 100) get the heck out. As a precaution, never put clothes in the drawers or on the bed. Keep luggage away from the bed. Never bring your luggage into the house after a trip...leave it outside. Bag your clothing in a garbage bag, tie it shut, and launder the clothes in hot water and dry on high heat. Spray the luggage with Hot Shot or Raid BedBug Killer and store the luggage in trash bags that are tied closed.

You can kill bedbugs in the following ways (we researched the heck out of this while sitting by the pool cruising the internet):
1. Wash clothes on high heat and dry on high heat.
2. Place the object in the dryer on high heat for about 40 minutes.
3. Place objects on an oven rack at 140 degrees for 3 hours minimum (don't burn the house down.)
4. Use insecticides such as pyrethrins found in Hot Shot and Raid BedBug Killer. However, keep in mind that many Bedbugs have developed resistance to poisons...so don't count on them working.
5. Place objects in a deep freezer (o degrees F) for a MINIMUM of weeks.
6. Spray high-concentration rubbing alcohol (91%) directly on the item (questionable).

If you stay at the 'Cuda and get Bedbugs that make your life misery, there is one final thing you can do....strip down naked, spray yourself with Raid, douse your house with gasoline, strike a match, run, leave all your belongings including your car behind, and move somewhere else. Hopefully, this paragraph will make you examine your room VERY carefully before unpacking. Because Bedbugs are a nightmare! And the Cuda is a giant zoo of insects!

Also, of some interest...hotel is extremely noisy during day (because of crewmembers who frequent the bar during cruise stops) and super quiet at night. Not an issue for most people.

We have stayed at Hotel Barracuda on several occasions and have found it to be reasonably priced, close to restaurants and downtown area and generally pleasant. That was before the arrival of the "No Name Bar" which is immediately behind the Hotel Barracuda. The "NNB" is run by a former cruise worker. The bar/restaurant caters to cruise workers who are on shore break in Cozumel. The bar is quite busy from around noon each day until early evening. During that time, there is a steady barrage of "disco/techno/modern/hip-hop" music being blared from the bar's speakers, making quiet relaxation an impossibility. Furthermore, on Tuesday nights, there is live entertainment. Being that our room was about 10-feet away from the evening's entertainer, we finally made our feelings known to the hotel manager at about 11 p.m. that evening that we were tired from a full day of scuba diving and that the music needed to stop. Nothing happened. I then voiced my displeasure to the ownder/manager of the bar. He told me that the music would end shortly. True to his word, the music did end momentarily.

The problem with the Hotel Barracuda is that it is being dominated by people who are just passing through and who care little about the people who are staying at the hotel. It's a noisy, crowded and generally unpleasant atmosphere in sharp contrast to the quaint, quiet little hotel that we fondly remember.

When we return to Cozumel Island, we will not be staying at Hotel Barracuda.

My wife and I stayed at the Barracuda and after reading some not so positive reviews I can say it wasn't that bad but if you like luxuary don't even think about staying there. The room was average size, no remote for the TV, no shampoo, hairdryer, tissues and no hand towels or wash cloths just bath towels. Maid service was great though we never saw the maid didn't have much interaction with the front desk so can't comment on them. what is great about this hotel is the location Mega, Grocery right across the street close to the money exchange at the Punta Langosta mall and and only a 5 or 10 min walk to the main square and shopping. has a great beach area with the No Name Bar onsite the waitresses were very friendly as was everybody else we talked to and spoke good english. The beds were a little small but teh shower and bathroom was large with plenty of hot water and good pressure. Some people complained about the noise at the pool but it's only in the daytime when the cruise ships are in but ends around 5pm. It really wasn't the people it was the music they play that loud Electronic Techno repetative music that makes me want to rip my eardrums out but that was only one day the rest of the time it was pretty quite. Another great thing about the place is all rooms are ocean veiw with a nice little balcony with chairs and each room has a minifridge which is real handy the room were clean but we did have a few ants but they pretty much kept to themselves and didn't bother us at all. So if you just want a nice inexpensive room and don't care about all the frills and stuff I would definatley reccomend this Hotel.
