Great service, Decent food, Very slow elevators

Review of The Sens Cancun
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Jul 2016
This hotel is more for the family or people who enjoy something more quiet and relaxing as opposed to partying and drinking till you lose your innards. Since I came here with my girlfriend and we preferred something not so ratchet and disgusting we were happy with being here. We came here with the Air Canada vacations group and was driven to the hotel and back to the airport after our stay. During the transportation there were rowdy, probably straight out of high school or college, kids hopping off at different hotel locations (Thankfully).

Anyways, back to the review. This hotel has 2 pools, one quiet pool and a larger pool connected with the kids pool. Not to mention the shallow waters of the ocean is also a great place for people who have little to no experience with swimming (Such as myself and my girlfriend).

The food could be rated from terrible to just good food. We ate at pretty much all the restaurants and I would recommend The White Box to everybody. It's a new concept restaurant they opened in between the buffet on the Grand side of the hotel and the beach side bar/beach club.

The one thing I really really really hated and lost my head over was the elevators. It was TERRIBLY slow. Around 9pm to 10pm the mob of people in front of the elevator is definitely by far the worst joke I've ever seen. Wifi is also paid only and pretty expensive at that. If you don't want to pay for wifi, there's a way around it and it comes in the next paragraph.

In the lobby and standing right in front of the Oasis Palm side's buffet, are employees wearing a beige shirt and black pants. They first ask if it's your first day and such and then lure you into about an hour + sales pitch for buying vacation-share (time-share). If you do go and stay for at least an hour they will give you their wifi code and a bottle of tequila. The wifi only works in the lobby though. I can totally give you guys the wifi code if they don't change it, but that just means I'm taking their business away.

The cleanliness of the whole resort was very impressive. They clean every moment they can. The housekeepers however, should really abide by their own hotel codes and rules. There were little tents telling us if we don't want the towels changed, hang them up and if we don't want the bed sheets changed leave the tent on the side tables. None of those were honoured, or dishonoured, however you see it. Our bed sheets were changed regulary and our towels too. The in-suite fridge was also refreshed regularly. HOWEVER! This is a big HOWEVER. All this spotless cleaning lasted a few days. They also threw away something of my girlfriend that she needed for her make-up, thinking it was garbage since there wasn't much left of it. They gave us a soap they probably give their V.I.P.s, but that was it. Wasn't much help since it didn't help her with what it was supposed to do.

All in all I give this around a 3-3.5 for having great service, decent facilities and decent food.

Summary:
Pros:
Family-Friendly (Not too noisy with partiers)
Decent Food
Many activities

Cons:
Housekeepers are sporadic with service
Expensive Wifi
Time-Share / Holiday Share reps everywhere
Elevators are by far THE worst ever
Date of stay: June 2016
Room Tip: Rooms facing lagoon side have decent views. Get lower level rooms since elevators are slow.

Buffet food was better than previous reviews. Service was excellent, rooms clean. Only two small elevator's delayed getting up and down. Make sure you go to White Box restaurant, amazing!! Beach drink service better than the best!!
MakiTako restaurant was amazing also. Reservations required for Los Agaves and Careyes. Skip Los Agaves, food ok service fair, air conditioning bad. Careyes amazing food and service. Going back soon, I hope!!

Our family decided to skip cruising this year to go to Cancun so my sister can experience the all inclusive Mexico resort. We are total of 15 people including 3 teenagers and others ranging from 4yo to 11yo.
Our first impression when we check in was ok. Nothing out of ordinary for the place. Clean, neat layout grand entrance and spacious. We love the coconut/palm trees. Check in is easy and staffs are friendly. The overall English speaking is modest. We received our wristbands and explanation of all benefits if using other amenities within Oasis families location outside of Grand Oasis Palm resort so we are pretty happy. The guests staying there are almost 80% Spanish speaking (South American and some Mexican) probably due to Copa America cup. We were definitely a minority for English speaking group. Seemed like they are focused more on Spanish speaking audience. Most outdoor staffs and housekeeping staffs are not able to communicate in English well. The lady who cleaned our room cannot understand clearly what we say ..even with simple "can we have an extra Conditioner bottle, or a towell". Our kids accidentally broke the mouthwash glasses in the restroom and we asked to have them replace from day 2 until we left. No one bring the replacement cups over.
***Now is the not so good part.
- The rooms are small and dated. (we were on the 4th floor looking down the pool on the Grand Oasis Palm area) and if we want to have better ocean view then we have to pay upgrade to get a better view room which we did not do since we don't do anything else in the room beside sleeping.
-The elevators are small but we don't care since we enjoy walking the stair anyway.
-WIFI is NOT free as frontdesk people announce even at lobby area but if you step to the side where the customer service table located then you can nicely ask the rep to give u a Wifi access key for 2 devices in the room which we found very bizarre!!! They don't provide our statement when we check out which is a no no.
- Pools open very late (the front one is 10AM!!!) and close early (8PM)
- Mini bar drinks are free but not the knick knack. A "Chocolate bar" is not free while you can chuck many cans of beer you want.
- Kids club is very well accommodating but we didn't send our kids in there since they are more into swimming in the pools and build sand castle on the beach.
-Nightly shows are good overall.

*** Here are the bad and worst part:
- Making restaurant reservation is a nightmare!!! Phone never work and we have to stay in line to make reservation for our family (Las Agaves) for an hour. The worst part is most restaurants refuse to accommodate big group (15 people) at once due to space limited..but this is totally a disservice to a family reunion. They encouraged us to book multiple rooms in their resort but not able to accommodate restaurants unless we do buffet which no one can stand the same kind of menu after 3 days.
- Buffet menu and quality (Sisal and Las Palmas) are not impressed and the Las Palmas has very small space with about 8 outside tables. The wait table staff was very nice and she got nice tips for taking care of us.
-The Las Agaves and La Bamba (seafood) are good but strong Mexican influence style most of the time (you won't see much of American, Italian, Thai, or Chinese). Waiters are nice and well service. Dos Lunas is an Italian pasta place that offered good space and food is good.
- Outdoor bars are decent and on par with the Crown Paradise where we stayed in 2012. But 1 bar and 1 swim up bar for 2 resorts (Grand Oasis Palm and Grand) are not able to accommodate the crowd during lunch hour. A Sushi roll order can take up to 20 min wait.
- The Japanese restaurant "Maki Tacos" is the worst service we ever experienced. They try out a new concept of "cozy sitting environment" but the restaurant only serves 50 people max hence the gal flat out refused to serve us for 2 days despite our effort to make thing easy for her (we don't care to sit together, we only need 3 tables). She failed us the 3rd time. Our group showed up separately and early according to her advice (6PM dinner time) and she only allowed 13 people in and 2 had to sit outside waiting for another 40 minute to cause my brother in-law to take his daughter to eat pasta. Sushi rolls are ok and very little ginger/wasabi. Waiters are professional, friendly, and their English is better. Seaweed ice cream dessert is awesome!
I'm working for Holland America & Seabourn cruises- hotel operations for over 10 years. I'm sure that wait table person would be fired/reprimanded if this happened on the ship(s).
Overall experience are ok since we don't want to compare to cruise products/services. We understand things can be different from one person to the next depends on different needs. There are lots that need improve (quality service, food quality) if they want to attract more tourists back to stay with them with high price tag. Our family decided that we will try other chains if we want to do reunion in Cancun again.

What makes this hotel stand out is probably the kids club! They have a huge variety of activities for them to play and they have great staff to take care of them. They buffets have a kids section with food for them it's great. The only aspect I didn't like was that the pools close at 8pm which is a bit early given that there's still sunlight

resort shared between oasis palm and grand oasis palm, all inclusive resort grand oasis palm is an upgrade to oasis palm.
grand oasis palm has well appointed rooms our room was on 6 floor room was booked for 3 adults plenty of space to move around ,room was very clean serviced by maid service every day, bathroom very clean and in good repair, fresh towels when requested, staff only to pleased to help. room had a good veiw of large clean and well maintained pool, At the upgrade grand oasis palm the pool side loungers had very comfortable padded top cover fitted, nice touch, beach very close to hotel and pool
sand on beach clean and debris free safe to swim in up to safety buoys clearly visable. although in hurricane season 14 days spent with glorious sunshine and cooling breezes ,loved the holiday relax , all staff fantastic from rebecca drinks attendent to food waiters at restaurants leo, alphonse ,miguel to name only some .
This complex is for all ages ,but does sometimes feel more suited to very young kids in family groups .
many of the entertainments are geared to childrens needs.
sometimes the swimming pools seem overrun with young children
but their is life guard attendance daily .
very reasonable holiday for very resonable cost. would rebook again.

Room tip: Ground floor of complex has very large air conrooms and laundry higher floor levels should be quieter.

Grand Oasis Palm is a good resort for families in my opinion. Just for clarity, we stayed in July 2014. If you are thinking about a nice economic stay in Cancun, this place will serve you well. It is not a 5 star hotel, but it is a nice vacation for the family, with good food, drinks, pools, etc.

We loved the sushi bar, and spent many late lunches there. The buffet was good, and I personally really enjoyed the a la Carte restaurants, although my wife was so-so on them. The sign-in process was a pain, and they did try to charge us for things we did not use in the mini-bar, but since we were forewarned, we took pictures when we arrived, and again when the bill came, and were able to dispute that quickly. We enjoyed having the Capitan Hook boat at the edge of our property, and where able to walk around outside to a few quick excursions including the local open air Catholic Church down the street.

My girls loved the pool and the shows were fun and impressive. Our family particularly liked the circus. The Mariachi bands on resort brought the culture to you, and we were all happy with the drink selections (although we are not serious drinkers) and lines to the bar were reasonable. The beach was okay. The waves are shallow and not many shells, but in general the kids had fun in the water and it was still a very enjoyable experience.

Service was okay. The workers did seems stressed and not attentive, but they did work hard. I was really impressed by the sushi crew, and though things were slow, it was more of a management issue than the workers themselves. They busted their butts to get things done.

I think the thing to remember is that it is an economic vacation, not a cheap vacation. The rooms and food and entertainment were all good to above average. They were not five star, but no one going here is paying for five star. In my opinion, five star resorts are too expensive, and unless you are used to that on all your previous trips, you will have a great vacation without breaking the bank.
