Great Trip with low quality food and food poisoning too

Review of The Sens Cancun
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Apr 2013
Great trip with low quality food and food Poisoning too. Drinks were descent. Our family of five had had already stayed here 4 years ago and this time we should have chosen a different resort to stay at. The quality has gone down. Due to a family members health we could not book our family vacation until just a few weeks before our spring break and this was the only affordable option at that time.

The room was nice. Not huge, but nice. I paid for ocean view and my view was awesome (not all are). I was high and centered on pool, but full ocean view. Seeing both the pool and ocean was even better. The night club gets pretty noisy for all oceanview rooms (was closed on Wednesday). This noise did not bother me. They also play music at the main pool but I thought it was very non offensive. The doors look nice and are wood but let in all the hallway noise. The insulation must not be the best either as noise can travel from room to room (once again was not a problem). Elevators are tiny and there is not near enough of them for the size of hotel. I was on 7th floor (really this is the 8th) and I walked/ran almost every time. The tiny elevator was always full and stopping at every floor.

Entertainment/shows I think are twice a week and ok at best. All we say was the Mexican Show. We must have missed the other. We went here to relax so this was ok.

To start off do not book at the Oasis Palms Resort. For not much more you can stay at the Grand Oasis Palms Resort and you will be treated a little better. You will also get a nicer room at the Grand. We did stay at Grand this time and had the Black Bracelet. This lets you into the Grand Pool Area which is just a big rectangular pool but goes from an inch to about 6.5’. Great pool for any size kids. The Black bracelet also lets you into a few more restaurants and the Tequila Lounge. I did not use the Tequila lounge but heard good things. The buffet for the grand side just seemed to be the same thing with a more limited selection. This buffet used to be a Brazilian restaurant that required reservations. The Brazilian restaurant was where they would slice off slabs of many different meats onto your plate (this no longer exists). I found this out after waiting in line for an hour and then being told I do not need reservations, it is just for the Grand Side, and it is still the Brazilian meat slicing place. It was not and I was left day two with no reservation for the nicer restaurants.

The buffets are very Blah with very little to no quality foods. Melons (orange and green), pineapple, watermelon, and maybe seeded mango. Pizza is very thin and droopy with not much on it. Steak on a stick was really good and omelets were pretty good. The Mexican/International buffet by the water was bad too.

The seafood place was a joke and bad. There is a window were you can see all the food through a window at a walk up bar. I asked for a couple shrimp and a couple pieces of imitation crab meat pieces. They told me I had to order a meal. I asked for the meal and pointed to an area and told me I needed a table. I asked for a table and they said no beach clothes. I came back later asked for any meal that included those 2 items. We then picked away at it. It was bad.

There is a very nice fancy looking Mexican place downstairs from the main pool. I did not eat there but it looked nice.

The Restaurant Aires de Norte was very good for us. The food was great. Steak was ok (thin and hard). The Pork Ribs were out so replaced with Pork Loin and this was great! Some Almond dessert with coconut ice cream and strawberry /raspberry sauce was amazing (did not sound near as good as it tasted). Chicken was hard and bad. The La Hagularra salad (or something like that) was also very good. My wife had the fish and we think this is where she got food poisoning (still sick 4 days later)

There is a lot of pay things at this all inclusive resort. Room service food is free but you get billed $12 each time you order. 2 beers, 2 waters, and 4 pops are free a day from the in room minibar. But if you each m&m’s, peanuts, Pringles, redbull, or Gatorade you will be charged several dollars per item. The cabana looking beach beds all said effective April first there is a $40 charge to use these. All bars had free drinks but also showed pay drinks on signs. All nicer restaurants had free food and list of pay foods. One steak restaurant was pay only food. ALL INCLUSIVE SHOULD BE ALL INCLUSIVE.

The taco stand had nothing I would consider eating. I heard about nachos but never found them. I never found them but am sure they were no good.

The popcorn/hot dog/hamburger/ice cream stand was for the Grand only. However, they put one on the other side for a few hours here and there. So, I am not sure about the only for the Grand part. The ice cream cones were chocolate only but my kids liked them. The popcorn was nothing special. The cross contamination of utensils, buns, cooked meat, uncooked meat was very scary. There was nothing every ready and even if it was popcorn it took 5-15 minutes to get. Twice we saw people/kids wait 10-15 minutes to then say it was closed or out for the day. No signs. The burgers were bad; I am not sure what that meat is.

There is a late night snack stand that opens around midnight and must be open a couple hours. The fries were good. They had the bad burgers too.

You can not get a drink until 10am. Pop and juice is available for eat in at the buffets.

The beach has pretty much no waves and lots of seaweed washes ashore. This was good for our little one, but we pretty much only swam in the pool.

Most workers were very pleasant to work with including front desk on Grand side.

Kids club was good too, but only oe of our kids used it (Just turned 6) and too short for the waterslide. She went to do an art project and liked it for that.

The hotel is suppose to offer a runway club (transportation excluded) in case you want to go check out one of their other resorts. They denied me and said they are all too full for that while you are here.

The food at Grand Oasis Cancun (not to be confused with this one – Grand Oasis Palm) has a lot more in variety and some quality can be found. At the other hotel I was able to have onion rings, shakes, malts, and more choices at the buffets.

I did bring tips and tipped bartenders, servers, and even house keeping. Every few drinks I gave a $. I brought $150 in ones from 4 days and used $100 of them through the trip.

I used USA transfers for transportation to/from hotel and they were reliable, on time, and did a good job.

When we arrived our bags were taken promptly by the bell boy. We then went to the front desk to check in and were ignored by the front desk staff. Once we did get noticed they told us our room was ready but they had to check it first and we should go and eat while they do that. Once we got into our room we had to go back down to find our bags and get a lock for the safe. Our sleeping arrangement for our 7 day vacation for 2 adults and 3 children was two double beds pushed together. They do not have cots! The pool was freezing cold the beach was full of seaweed. The kids club was off limits unless you wanted to ditch your kids on your family vacation. This should be stated somewhere as that was why we booked at this resort. The disco bar being right in the heart of the rooms was a bit of a turn off as well. The breakfast was good and the rest of the other buffet meals were terrible. The valet boys were the only friendly people that we met our entire trip. They were always very helpful and always smiling. We were always waiting in line for the elevator and by the end of our trip there was only one of the two elevators working. I would not recommend this resort for a family vacation.

Maybe I've been spoiled by visiting other resorts but this one was only so, so. The resort is clean and the staff are great. The buffet was mediocre at best. We did book one of their "romantic beach" dinners but due to the high winds had to move the dinner in-doors. The food at that dinner was quite good.

There were noisy guests in the halls at 4 in the morning that was really disturbing and you could hear the TV from the next room all night.

Would I go back... nope.

My husband and I stayed for 3 days at this hotel, the place is very nice and clean, and it's right in front of the beautiful beach. However the staff is not friendly, very nasty with the tourists and not helpful when you need help or have a question.

We stayed at the Grand Oasis Palm March 21 - 27, 2013 and was very pleased with this hotel. We had a disappointing start from Sun Wing, our flight was delayed by 12 hours from Calgary so we lost a day of our vacation. I called Sun Wing and was told to email their customer service and still haven't received a reply. Will not fly Sun Wing again. However this review is about the hotel, not the flight so will get back to the Grand Oasis Palm. I would definately recommend this place. The only thing that could have been better was the beds. They are rock hard and uncomfortable but hey I guess you need to have some reason to look forward to going home when your vacation ends. Other than that, I have only good things to say about this hotel. The staff is so friendly! We always take the time to get to know the bartenders and waiters and the same thing happens at every place we stay, if you make the effort to treat them as more than your server, attempt to speak Spanish and of course tip them, the appreciate it so much and light up. I'm always amazed at how other guests rarely say please or tip. In the 6 days of our stay, I only once saw someone else tip. I always bring 100 US singles (it can be difficult to get change once you're there) and we tip the chambermaids, the bartenders, the waiters and also look to tip the people who rarely get recognized such as the lady at the snack bar grilling our burgers or the lady at breakfast buffet making our omelettes. These are the most hard working people and they are busting there butts trying to make sure we have a good vacation and yes we are staying at an 'all inclusive' resort but to pay a little more and see the smiles and appreciation from the staff is very gratifying. They don't leave a tip jar out at the bars like most other places so maybe this is why people aren't prompted to tip or because it's hard to get small bills. The staff definately doesn't expect to be tipped but as I said, please plan ahead and consider doing it anyway. I particularly remember Eduardo, Antonio, Felipe and Raphael, very happy staff members that made us feel so welcome. The hotel is very clean, the beach has lovely, fine sand, feels great on the feet. The sea is clear and warm and they even have servers bringing you drinks to your lounge chair. This place has all the elements for pure relaxation. We would defnately come back!

Room tip: lagoon facing room quieter

Staff speak poor English. Made appointment for spa, but when we came there on time only to find out the service was closed. Rarely able to make reservations for dinner, the only time successfully booked was that we waited for an hour in the early to reserve dinner. Bad wifi signal in room. The service there was unable to serve so many people in the hotel.
