Ok, so this hotel is not the Marriott but it's also not trying to be. If you're a traveler like my family and I and you're trying to immerse in the culture and shop and eat the same food the locals eat, then I would suggest you give this place a try. We have stayed at all different kind of hotels and resorts and I'll tell you this hotel it's great for the price. It's cheap compared to others in the same area, it's in a great location (Centro), very close Mercado 23 and Ferry to Isla Mujeres and to pretty much everything and easily accessible to bus and taxis. All you gotta do is step outside the hotel and wave and someone will stop. Well, that's what we did anyway. Aside from the location and as it's the case in every hotel, I'll give you my own personal tips about what we liked and didn't like about the hotel. Although to be honest there wasn't much we didn't like as this place turned out to be great for us.

The fact that this is a hotel that accepts dogs, escaped me for some reason. The fact is this hotel is "dog/pet friendly". This is great for pet owners but for me, I happen to be allergic to pet hair so when I found out that my husband had already booked us to this hotel, I was a little worried. I guess the name didn't tip us off since here it's mostly known as Hotel Santa Maria, never really found out why the hotel has two names but I have to say, we ended up staying 7 nights here and didn't need to go see a doctor. Props to the staff for cleanliness!!

So here's a list of the things we did like:

Location- like I mentioned above, right in the middle of the city, very easy to get to pretty much anywhere like Mercado 23, Mercado 28 and Puerto Juarez where you take the ferry Ultramar which takes you to Isla Mujeres. FYI Mercado 23 is only about 6-7 miles from this hotel and is for the most part a farmers market but you can find a lot more stuff there, and way cheaper than at Mercado 28.

As far as good food goes, there was a good little restaurant right across from the hotel called "Las Brasas Del Bajio" and let me tell you the food is so very good. Off the menu, I'd say try the fajitas and the asadas, it's a plate with lots of different meats like pork chops, chicken, steak, etc.
The "aguas" it's another word for juice so try the agua de melon or guanabana. They're the best!
Also, "Chile Morron" means green peppers and "alambres" are a sort of taco with lots of meats.

Got a little sidetracked a bit there but let's get back to what this review it's really about, the hotel.

The hotel - its a two level building with verandas and vines hanging from the top, it's kept nice and clean. There is a big tree right in the middle of the hotel lobby/breakfast area which you can appreciate while having breakfast in the morning, it gives the whole place a nice ambiance. There's also a pool table in the lobby.

The staff- they are very friendly and ready to help with anything. If you need anything, just ask. They're more than happy to help. The manager's name is Miguel and he's also very nice and a great help.

Wifi- had no issues whatsoever.

Room size and cleanliness- we are a family of 3 so we booked the Junior 3-bed suite so we had plenty of space and were very comfortable and our room was always cleaned. Towels and linens were changed everyday.
Don't forget to tip the staff as they are nice and friendly and work very hard to make everyone feel comfortable and at home.

Big, nice fridge and microwave in the room.

Breakfast every morning from 7am-10am- it's not the best but it's not bad either despite other comments I've read. It is complementary with your stay so it beats having to spend $10 or more every morning on breakfast so it worked for us!. Plus you get a choice on the eggs, you can ask for "Mexican style" which has onions, tomatoes and green peppers in it or "jamonada" which has ham on them. Or if you like them just plain scrambled then they have that too. They come with black fried beans, sour cream and grated queso fresco and chips and "salsa de jitomate (or tomatoes) con cilantro", which again is a little salad with tomatoes, onions and cilantro. Pretty tasty, even my picky 7-year-old liked it!
Oh and they also have "pan dulce", which for those that don't know means pastries, or sugar donuts. They're a little bigger than the normal-sized ones we have here in the US.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that on the first and second floors, which would be the second third and third levels, there are verandas (as you can tell from the picture) with nice little tables with chairs for you to sit back and relax. It's a nice touch as you can sit out there at night when it's quiet and relax.

And now, for the things I don't like but like I said, were not a huge deal:

When we got there, the bathroom was not as clean as the room, the bath trim was dirty and bath drain was clogged but we talked to the receptionist and she send someone right away to clean it, so this also must be noted.

No phone in the room- if you have to make a call, you have to go downstairs and ask the receptionist to let you use their phone.

This one is more of a suggestion than a complaint- I'd be great if at breakfast they could offer more of a selection other than eggs and beans and chips, like perhaps fresh cut fruit, yogurts, and more of a variety of morning juices, like orange juice or any other flavors.. my daughter had the same juice every morning since we got there and after the third day, she didn't want the same grape juice anymore.

No pool - a pool is a must for everyone who stays and wants to relax on a hot sunny day.

Overall, I give this hotel 3 stars and I'd say we will most likely be coming back.

Right in the middle of the real Mexico is the Santa Maria dog town suites we stayed 17 nights total upon our arrival we where greated by a very friendly receptionist and as we entered there was a real live mariachi band playing music this was a special event for Mexican new year, they played the next night also this made the atmosphere !!! The room was clean there was a TV and a coffee pot great air conditioning a microwave and fridge although when we are arrived the fridge didn't work with in minutes of mentioning this to the front desk they immediately brought a new fridge to the room , the cleaning staff is also amazing and we felt totally comfortable even to the point of leaving valuables out including cash and it was never missing I could not be more impressed by the honesty of the staff and helpfulness of the staff , keep in mind this is the middle of the city many ppl including locals warned us against staying here saying it was not a good choice I'm happy to say they could not be more wrong we loved our stay and will return I felt very safe !!!!! The price was great and there are many plans to even further update this place if your looking for a great place to enjoy with in walking distance to everything look no further this is a great option my only suggestion would be a few repairs to the plumbing as water ran ect but this is a minor thing I should also mention the wifi worked great

Room Tip: Room 111 was perfect right in the middle second floor,
