Great Parnassus Family Resort
Ranked #71 of 177 Hotels in Cancun
Reviewed 20 January 2010

We went with a bunch of friends.. ages from 18 to about 26. Not so much of a party resort as it is a family resort. We went during the US spring break from march 8th to march 15th. Downtown life during that week is MIND BLOWING. All the waitresses and waiters, men working at the bars were very very friendly. Tip each bar 5 or 10 bucks at the beginning of the week and I will guarentee your glass is never empty.
The food was great. I high reccommend La Mainson de Michelle, make reservations ahead of time as it is a 5 course meal.
Overall I would come back here yes, but not with a group of friends to party. More along the lines with a girlfriend or boyfriend, or perhaps your family.

Service you experienced:
Runs the spectrum from great to lousy. Overall, really attentive, and sweet. We were initially assigned a room that was terrribly loud (over the air conditioners) and were immediately re-assigned when we complained. Ideally, there would be no "sub-par" rooms, but at least they were responsive. When we first arrived, someone gave us a map of the resort, and details about the activities , etc. this is really a nice service. Most of the waiters were attentive and warm, if a little rushed. At one point the housekkeeping staff didnt replenish our toilet paper or towels after running out. The staff was most attentive when trying to sell us on going to the sister resort for a little preview (think they get commission or something). In the spa: truly lousy service. I was left for 25 minutes with my feet soaking before a pedicure, they either forgot about me, or went on break.
ROOM: Once settled in new room, Amazing! We had a 'family" room, with a partitioned bunk-bed for privacy. Great view/balcony. Be aware: the tub had a hard edge, we folded a towel across it. Make sure to request a room that will be "quiet" on the balcony, so you dont get stuck on top of the air conditioners. Again, it's not "luxe" but the set-up is nice. Our thermostat was broken. If you are a cold-sensitive person, bring an extra blanket - hotel blankets super-flimsy, not too keen on giving extras.

Location & amenities: Nice pool(s). Awesome! kid's pool area, very cold water. Again, loud music at the kiddie pool area. At the beach, Do not expect to go in the water, there are rocks. The beach sand is really nice, however, there was a boulder with a rusty pipe sticking out and a log with rusty nails. The beach was clean except for one day (day afer a holiday).

Say what you liked best & least
Best:
1. Easygoing, casual, low key atmosphere. Never felt under -dressed, always felt my very loud 3 year old was welcome.
2. Fresh fruit: tons and tons all day long.
3. Great Christmas Eve program for the kids. The staff dressed up as superheros, Santa came, games, etc. Our son had a blast and the staff were so kind to him. (**if you were at the kid's on-stage "dance party" and have video/photos of this, please share, our camera disappeared after the festivites.**).

Least:
1. The Noise: as a family with a young child, we have pretty low expectations for quiettude. However, the acoustics in the resort, coupled with thin doors and open floor plan, meant we heard llots of noise from the food court, passerbys, etc. (we were on the 4th floor, still hear clink of forks from food court). The most annoying was the sound of the smoothie machine resounding throughout the hotel starting at 730 am. The food court had great food, nice views, but so loud, can't eat. If you have sensory issues, or kids with sensory issues, the noise will be a challenge!
2. The Food: Great in the food court/buffet area, but not as good in restaurants. There are several themed restaurants, and their themes are "food from somewhere else, done mediocre". Restaurants seemed understaffed. Maybe due to the holidays?
3. Most obnoxious: the SELL. I was waylaid a lot by staff asking me had I signed up to go to the sister resort tour. This is a nice chance to check out the good beach at the sister resort, which kids are not wecome at. I wish they had been that attentive when we were trying to locate our "lost" camera....

Okay, so no resort is perfect, but I think that this place is awesome for families travelling with kids...I mean it's not 5 star..but for the value, I think it's pretty good..our weather was not great, but that wasn't the resort's fault ☺ The food was pretty good, breakfast at the buffet was excellent, eggs and omlettes made to order, fresh fruit, sausage, french toast, yogurt, smoothies, cereal..lots of options..
The a la carte restaurants were okay...hit and miss, but still there were so many options..I can't understand if you can't find something you like..
It was never too busy anywhere we went...never had to wait.
The beach was closed for the majority of our stay, but when it opened, it was beautiful.
The staff here were awesome...so good with the kids, and so friendly..
The rooms are spacious, and as far as I am concerned very clean. I don't know many resorts that have the double beds (or king) and bunk beds for the kids.. It was a little loud, but not so that you could not fall asleep...there was a little "farm" beside the hotel, and the roosters were up very early..that was a little annoying, but not awful.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for families..

The food at this place was not good - it seemed like it was always cold or just waiting to be reheated and slapped together for you. I saw hamburgers so congealed in fat and disgusting goo sitting forever in a pan that were just reheated and put on a bun for unsuspecting kids. SCARY. The food always sat around far too long. The fruit and smoothie bar was the only place I really trusted. When you eat at the buffet make sure you get there at opening and have something they make fresh. (omellete bar was always made to order).
When it rained the common areas leaked and where there wasn't a towel soaking up the water you had to be very careful not to slip and fall. Make sure you bring a white noise generator so that you can sleep at night - all the rooms are open to the concourse/restaurant /lobby level and wow does the noise reverberate.
I loved our family room and the separate bunk bed room for my 2 year old daughter. It was great to order some "fresh" food from room service and sit on the balcony with my wife while our toddler napped without being able to see us. This was a nice feature at night too ;-).
The pools were freezing cold and I wonder what the hotel meant by jacuzzi as it was no warmer than the pool. The pool area was also very, very cramped. The kids club was a big hit with my 2 year old and the shallow pool there was heated - and not just by urine. She had a blast and the staff was great. The older kids seemed to be very busy with crafts and games and other parents were very pleased with how their kids were occupied. My only complaint would be that the toddler area seemed to lean towards watching TV instead of occupying the children with play time and crafts although we did bring home some things that our daughter made. Again though, the water in the pirate ship area was too cold for most kids to even dip their toes in. BRRRR.
The gym area was really nice as was the steam room, hot tub, and sauna but who really wants to spend time in a gym on vacation?
I was also unhappy with the hotel allowing people to sell time shares in the lobby. They even gave them desk space. Don't let these people waste your time unless you are ready to give a firm NO after you allow them to offer advice and orient you with the hotel.
AWFUL for me but GREAT for you - the beach was closed for repair. Looks fantastic now (too bad we left the day it opened).

Let's start with good:
1. Modern
2. Good kids club and kids water park
3. Large and modern rooms
4. Fast and good bar service
5. Mini golf

Now, bad:
1. Main buffet totally enclosed, noise and heat will kill you. Looks like food court.
2. Even in your room you will hear noise from restaurants - hotel built like tall shopping mall, try to sleep in shopping mall - you will understand.
3. Main pool has more people per square foot than subway, water was murky and cold.
4. Adults only pool located on concrete roof above lobby. Concrete, concrete everywhere.

And ugly:
1. No feeling of being in Caribbeans, hotel has no grounds, you cannot go outside and enjoy even a short walk.
2. Hotel has NO BEACH. Only sharp rocks, practically no sand.
3. One day large glass panel (4x8') felt onto French restaurant. Luckily it was early afternoon and restaurant was empty.

Go to Great Parnassus if you want to spent your vacation indoors in hot and noisy shopping mall.
