Depending on your expectations the Great Parnassus can be a wonderful inexpensive vacation. The staff is wonderful, attentive and very pleasant. The common areas are attractive but the food is mediocre and our room needed to be updated. We were hounded by guest service staff into taking a tour. We didn't, but found out it was about buying into a club membership. The place needs to put money into their rooms and improve the food. The buffet and French restaurant were fine but the Italian and Japanese restaurant need help. We would try a different place next time but we did enjoy our stay.

Room Tip: All rooms have views but our bathroom was in terrible shape. I am not sure if this is the norm.

Just got back yesterday from Great Parnassus. stayed there from 4/21 -4/27. I must first say that the staff is AMAZING...they really do go above and beyond. Rooms were comfortable and the view was great. We were on the 7th floor on the even side - we did here the generator next door but it didn't bother me too much. The bartenders at the adult bar were wonderful but I could not understand why the adult bar closed at 6:00PM but Miquel that works for Aquaworld is there in the afternoon - He can give you the BEST price on any excursions. The breakfast was fine but the rest at the buffet could use some improvement.(food was luke warm and not very appetizing) We only ate at one restaurant - Portofino and it was good. All in all, we had a great time as this was our first time in Cancun. It seemed like a great place for kids with lots of activities. I also was NEVER bothered by a timeshare person. We (my husband and I) made several visits to the Golden Parnassus which was very nice and they had a great bar outside on the beach. I would stay there again, I would like to bring my kids there - I think they would love it.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the odd side.

We just return from the great parnassus luckily with our lives. when we first got there , the hotel was decent and the food was ok for the first 3 days. BUT DO NOT TRUST THE SECURITY,MANAGERS AND OWNERS. There was a woman while at the kids club TAKING PICTURES OF MY 3 CHILDREN AGE 3.6.8, near the mexican restaurant , no other children in site, we confronted her along with security, which did nothing. We explained that she was taking pictures of my children for the past 10 mins and wanted the pictures off her camera TALKING ABOUT CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND ABDUCTION/TRAFFICKING. We asked for the owner to be called in which nothing was done. I later saw the woman in which I took a picture of her with my 2 children while getting off the elevator on our floor. (on the 4th floor) She came out and assaulted me with my 3 yr old in my hand . I defended myself and my children. My children were hysterical and my daughter ran to our room on the 4th floor to get her father. My husband came and pulled the woman off me and WE CALLED SECURITY. Security took my husband , thinking he assaulted her until a witness from our floor said differently and reported what I am telling you now . By the time my husband got downstairs with his ID, there was no witness from OUR floor but that 4 security officers saw my Husband assault the woman on the 9th floor. Which was completely outrageous. My husband was then taken by a police officer and was told it was gonna cost 1000.00 plus 3 day stay in jail but 500.00 would clear up everything. My husband payed and then was returned back to the hotel thinking everything is over. Meanwhile I am in the room waiting for 2.5 hours not knowing what was going on with my husband and had 3 crying children. I then get a phone call at 1145pm to tell my to pack my bags and that were are leaving. After a LATINO WOMAN was taking pictures of my kids in their bathing suits and then later being assaulted. While exiting the building, they told us we had to sign out and we refused because they were throwing us out but they proceeded to tell my husband he will sign out and that the two man were waiting for him. Which was another set of officers. They try to tell my husband that the woman was pressing charges against him for assault. My husband denied any assault and ask for video to be given to prove he did not assault her.
My husband stated then my wife/children will press charges against her. The OFFICER PROCEEDED TO TELL, HIM TO TURN THE OTHER CHEEK OTHERWISE IT WILL GO BAD!!!! They then took my husband to the ATM and go him for another 1100.00 . When they took my husband from me around 1am in the morning, They left me in a cab with no place to go with 3 crying children. I had never been so fearful of my family. I then told the cab driver to take me to the Marriott. If anything you read from this is not to go there period and if you do travel outside the country stay at a US base hotel.
IF ANYONE WAS DONE THERE AT THAT TIME PLEASE EMAIL ME IT HAPPENED APRIL 13-14

I was very nervous about trip after studying recent reviews but we never experienced those issues perhaps because we were not there during spring break. We spent April 15-22, 2012 with my family at this resort which was April vacation in New England but is after college spring break. I had paid for an upgrade to a family room and upon check in was given an even room on the second floor. It had no tv in the kid's bunk bed area. After initally being told there were no rooms available after I was insistent they found an even side room on second floor. Rooms are large with good space. We had lovely ocean view with nice balcony. Bathroom is very large but ligting is terrible. The beds are very hard but you get used to it. Would be great to have a fridge. The staff is very friendly and knew our names by the second day. Hotel is very clean and there is always staff cleaning something. Hotel was not very full during our visit so we never had elevator issues or waits for restaurants or crowds at the pool. Loved Magnus for breakfast buffet each day. My family loved Big Ben's and we ate there at lease three times for dinner. The french adults only restaurant was fabulous and the sevice was exceptional. We only ate at Portofino's once and while I enjoyed my veal dish I did not enjoy anything else. The kids club was great and my daughter (8) loved the staff. My 11 year old son had the time of his live making friends and enoying all of the actiivites with the entertainement staff. Elli, Jorge, Joaquin were wonderful and really got the kids involved. The red flag was up on beach for our entire visit and the waves were rough. My daugther would not go in but my son and husband enjoyed it and the life guards paid attention if you got to far out. The shows and games at night were really fun if a little cheesy and the kids loved going up on stage and seeing the staff perform. We used Best Day Travel for shuttle and they were great. We also booked the Selvatica and jungle tour with them and loved them both. The pools are quite large and well maintained - we never used the adult pool. My daugter had her hair braided and it was excellant. The food choices can get a bit limited for lunch after seven days but not too bad. Tons of fresh fruit and pool snack bar was good. We had a great price for trip so I feel we got our money's worth. Kids were sad to leave and anxious to return. We would go back. It really is a family resort so I would not recommend for childless couples or young singles as it was not really geared to that crowd.

First off,
If you want the Ritz, pay for it. This is a mid range, family orientated establishment where the staff works VERY hard to please you. We stayed during the last wk. of March, into the the first part of April.
The beach - gorgeous. The pools - FUN. The staff - hard working! Shout out to Claudia in the Creperie!
Yes, it is a bit noisey, so if your sensitive, bring your earplugs, like I did, just as you should on an airplane. Yes, you don't have haute cuisine, but you can find some great stuff. People who say "food was horrible" were lazy, and didn't go forward with an open mind. We did room service EV ERY DAY for breakfast, and it was nothing short of awesome. Just give a tip 3-5 bucks, and you will be treated like royalty. Drinks, awesome. Take your big cups, and prepare to live like the big dogs. I don't think there really is top shelf booze, but after a few - it really doesn't matter.
Kids club - we booked this hotel for such, and didn't really use it! The entertainment staff work HARD at the main pool, and our kids loved seeing it and being involved. Aged 6 and 8 years.

Location - awesome. Take the bus into town, I believe it is R2, but don't worry, just ask where they are going. It is about a dollar a person. We did the pirate ship cruise one evening - if you have young boys, do it! This will be a family memory to be cherished. Again, you will be entertained by people who work HARD. We also took the bus one day into wal-mart, yes it was sketchy, but culture and fun.

Please, ask for your safe key when you check into the hotel. Take a large bag to pack things in to take downstairs for the pool/beach and limit trips in the elevator. The whole power outage thing scared the bejesus out of me, but we never had one. Taking everything with you was key when leaving your room in order to limit trips in elevator.

We were on the 5th floor, and had a gorgeous view. I can't believe people complain about waiting for the elevator - it's vacation for goodness sake! Enjoy the moment.

It is true - it appears that there is a towel shortage here. Skip a shower? Or, do as we did, pack a couple of beach towels. In the a.m., run down to the Creperie (say hola to Claudia), get a java of your choice, mark your chairs at the pool or beach. People are respectful of this, and we soon learned it is best to set up this base camp status.

Laugh at what is different, be kind, enjoy the moment. We did, and we have stayed all over the world from Australia to Italy. My favorite was the Japonese restaurant and the bbq by the pool. The rooms have great space, a beautiful balcony, and great a.c. I did have a friend who spoke Spanish call the hotel direct and request a family suite on the 5th floor, they honored our request.

The mexican restaurant by the kids club - awesome, but weird hours! So check about the hours. This is a hidden jem. Like I said, those that complain about the food forgot about exploring.

Have an awesome stay. As we have returned to Northern Michigan we miss the awesome weather and great family time.

Happy Travels!
