Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas
Ranked #15 of 176 Hotels in Cancun
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 4 July 2012

• Location - the most beautiful beach, view from the infinity pool and close to all nightlife
• Staff – our room view wasn’t great and reception was really helpful and moved us as soon as they could. The service staff and the bar staff all worked tirelessly to look after everyone!
• Whirl pool on the solarium balcony has amazing views and is really quiet.
• Two pool options – a lively one with daily activities and the option to go to the quiet one if it gets too much.
• Food – from the main buffet to the restaurants, the food was very good throughout.
• Cleanliness – the hotel was very clean throughout.

• Entertainment - day and night - don't expect too much but the team work hard and always have something going on if you are interested. The hotel goes to sleep at midnight though!

• Restaurant ambience – we felt that by claiming to have five a la carte restaurants was a little bit cheeky as the steak and Mexican and buffet were all in the same restaurant and didn’t really give us a feel of being somewhere different. This may have been temporary though as I think work was being done in the French restaurant. But even the Japanese and the Brazilian didn’t have much atmosphere we didn’t feel compared to previous resorts.

Points to note:
• Coco Bongo’s –show and atmosphere was pretty great – however it’s so busy you can’t stand without someone banging into to you and it’s very difficult to get to the free bar!! I’d recommend paying more for your own area with barman.
• Hard Rock Café – worth a visit – good band – tasty food but staff are a bit assumptive with regards to the tipping as they didn’t bring us change (and took a 34% tip!)
• Roots Jazz Bar – in old Cancun worth a visit but maybe best on a Fri or Sat.
• Tipping is expected even though it’s an AI resort, although if you don’t the service doesn’t go down much, they just really appreciate it when you do (even the jet ski staff!!)
• Be careful if you book with Thomson, we have flown on two long haul flights with them now and both times our entertainment wasn’t working – it was a very long journey!!

Room Tip: high floor and front facing room rather than a side room

Ok, I think there's enough reviews as to how amazing the hotel is, so I won't harp on (yes, it was brilliant), instead I'll try and give some tips/info:

We are:

Boyfriend (31) and Girlfriend (25) from London, UK.
We went for 14 days (which in my opinion was the right length of time)
We paid £1600 each for flights and accommodation (inc extra leg-room as I'm 6ft 5)
We took £1200 spending money between us - which covered all our excursions (see below)
Typical holidays we go on - Ibiza (separate from each other, with mates) and relaxing hot holidays as a couple.

The Hotel:

1. When checking in at reception ask to see the location of your room on the hotel map. If necessary (as per point 2 below) - ask for a free upgrade facing the direction you want.

2. As you look out the hotel towards the infinity pool the sun rises from the right and sets on the left - if you want the sun in the afternoon/evening on your balcony, you need a room "inside right" or "outside left" as you look at the pool.

3. If you're going to get married I'd advise to avoid the beach - we saw 2 weddings whilst we were there and the beach wasn't raked and they left the volleyball court up 10ft to the left and sun beds 10ft to the right!

4. ALL water that comes into the hotel is filtered, so is safe to drink/have the ice cubes and they also use this water for cooking.

5. You can book the a la carte restaurants up-to 3 days in advance - I advise doing so. They have 2 separate seating's - one at 6ish and the other at 9ish.

6. In the main lobby if you're facing the pool, if you head to the restaurant on the right they do a lunchtime a la carte (no need to book - just turn up).

7.The shops inside the hotel are vastly overpriced - just over the road is a bunch of shops which are much cheaper.

8. The hotel is on a one-way street. If you want to head in the other direction via bus, head out the hotel, do a right, walk down 200-300 yards and there is a break in the buildings that you can walk through.

9. The bars/clubs such as Coco Bongo and City Bar are approx 10 mins stroll.

10. Senior Frogs is walkable, but will take you at least 20 mins.

11. Sunbathing on the beach gives you more sun, but there are no umbrellas. Sunbathing in the gardens provide extra shade from trees and umbrellas, but if you're prone to getting bitten I'd stick to the beach.

12. When ordering drinks whilst sunbathing (anywhere) I'd order 2 drinks, as the time they take to get round you will be without one for quite a while.

13. The entertainment team at the hotel seem to throw "excursions" every night after the show - taking you to a particular bar in the west end. They organise this at approx 10.30.

14. Hotel was perfect for us, BUT we both agreed , if we were there with mates we would have stayed in the hotel next door (Riu Cancun) as it looked almost as nice, but was more lively. So stay here if you're a couple who want the odd crazy night out, or if you're with mates and want to mingle with the opposite sex - Riu Cancun next door.

We did 6 -

1. Jungle Speedboats. No tips really, if you don't like bumpy rides and/or get sea sick I'd avoid. Took about 10-15 mins to get there and was out for about 2.5-3 hours.

2. Xel-Ha (large park with a lagoon in middle and can swim with dolphins). is quite pricey - cost us $285 each, although that includes the dolphin swim, so there are cheaper options available. If you're not bothered about swimming with them, there is loads of places to watch them. I'd highly recommend this, my advice - do the dolphins as a separate excursion and do a full day just at Xel-Ha, simply because there is much to do there - the place is massive. Our dolphin photos cost $95 on a CD (we got all our pictures - 83) and there were other options - scrapbooks, DVD, cd, printed pics etc. Note: This is about a 2.5 hour drive from the hotel and is an all day event.

3. Chi'Initza (or however it is spelt - temples). It is EXTREMELY hot and humid here - people were passing out and even the tour guide was sweating buckets - this was NOT due to the particular day we went on - it is due to it being inland and very humid. Was really interesting and defo recommend going, just bear in mind there is a lot of walking involved and the humidity. My advise - go as early as possible in the day - we got there at 9.30am. Note it is at least a 3 hour drive to get there. Our trip also consisted of a swim in a local sink well and a visit to a 16th century town.

4. Bar Crawl (ours included Senior Frogs, Slice, Mandala and Coco Bongo). Fixed price (I think it was $65) which covered entry to all venues and all your drink. My advice - as opposed to the hotel which has all branded drinks, the only branded spirit outside the hotel is Bacardi - everything else will give you a killer headache - stick to your beer or Bacardi and mixer.

5. City Bar. Unlike all the other excursions which we booked through the rep, we did this one with the entertainment team. Club was good, very busy, worth checking out if like us you like your Ibiza style clubbing holidays (it's the biggest club in Latin America, holding 8,500 people). Note: City Bar as of June 2012 is only open on a Friday due to local licensing laws.

6. Pirate Boat Party. Really funny and great value for money (£95 for steak $105 for steak and lobster). Unless you love lobster I wouldn't bother paying the extra for it - very small pieces and you can get it for free in the hotel.

I hope this helps!

If you have come here to relax and get some sun.. you have come to the right place! I absolutely adored the pools at Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun. We got the ocean front room on level 7, and what a view!! It was so nice after being in America to not have no worry about tipping or getting out the wallet at all- as all our food and drinks were included. It was my first time at an all inclusive resort and Riu Palace laid it on! The food was amazing. They also have a pool bar, so you can sip cocktails in the sun all day and there are entertainment staff to keep everyone entertained.
One downfall I found, was the rooms are slightly dated and the beds were a bit hard, but we didn't spend much time in the room anyway. It was a really cool resort and I felt completely safe.
Would stay here again.
Thanks to the staff for making it such a memorable stay :)

Since we had a great experience the first time we were here we decided to go back again. We had a great experience - again! The entertainment crew was great. Diego and the pool bar crew were great!
The hotel is spotless and the staff very friendly. The only thing was we arrrived at 11am and did not get a room until after 3pm. At hotel that size should not have four people sitting in the lobby after traveling for hours for that long. We were also told we would get an upgrade, had a sign for one, but got a standard room. Nice room, but the average. Why try to sell us on something that wasn't actually true? My husband and I found that odd.
The only thing that may have slipped just a little was the food. Plenty to choose from, but nothing better than average with the exception of the cappacino.
That being said, I would still recommend the Riu Palace Las Americas and plan to return. Beautiful place and a great location.
