“A step above average”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2012

My wife, myself and another couple just returned from 10 days at this property. First let me say that last year we stayed at the Riu Palace Pacifico in Puerto Vallarta and I'm afraid we were spoiled as the Palace Pacifico is the nicest property in our 8 visits to Mexico. The Las Americas is a older resort and appears to be be in need of some repair. I must say that our room and all the staff were excellent. The food in the specialty restrurants did not meet our expectations. In fact the daily buffett was much better. We have been through Cancun several times on our way to Playa Del Carmen but have never stayed in Cancun proper. We did find Cancun a very fun place with many nice places to eat, shop and site see. All in all we love the Riu Resorts and will return to them. Unfortunately we will not return to Palace Las Americas.

Room Tip: Ask for a ocean view room 3rd floor or above.

My wife and I just returned from a week at the Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun. Our observations follow.

Positives:

The place is beautiful beyond words! The internet pictures don’t do it justice! The rooms are spotless and you can look in any direction and see someone cleaning or picking up.

The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. On the beach or sitting in one of the lounge chairs above the beach, the staff are constantly refilling your drinks with whatever you want. You won’t be without a drink for more than a few short minutes.

The buffet food is unbelievable! The variety and quality is superior. They have a salad station, several dessert stations, a fruit station, a hot food station with a dozen or so choices, home made “exotic” fruit juices in the morning as well as the regular choices.

The tables are set with linen and cloth napkins. The attention to detail in décor and furnishings is unbelievable

The wait staff will have your plate out of your way within moments after you finish your meal.

The grand lobby where you register is out of this world beautiful and elegant. It is also very large. It has free internet connection (bring your smart phone or computer).

The indoor bars (2) are beautiful beyond words. The service is fast. The wait staff are also attentive and will remember your drinks. The bars have name brand liquor.

The shows (one each night at 9:45) are great. Unfortunately, we missed a couple.

The infinity pool outside the main entrance is unbelievably gorgeous! We used it every day. There is another pool a hundred feet away (with its own in the water bar) but it’s more for the younger/party set and is louder than we enjoy (we just retired). .

The beach is beautiful and the water is warm (80 degrees). I would not consider it a small beach as some have reported.

In spite of reading on the web of complaints where some of the beach areas are blocked out by the sun in the late afternoon – true. SO MOVE SOMEWHERE ELSE ON THE BEACH WITH SUN!!!!!!!! There are many choices.

The rooms are beautiful and spotless. Unlike the postings on the web, our room did not smell musty. In fact the hallways, elevator area, and room (if anything) had a floral odor.
We slept great every night.

The hotel is right on the bus line. For $1 US you can go the entire route in either direction to get to malls (La Isla is the best), stores restaurants, or whatever.

One evening we went on the Pirate ship dinner cruise. We also did a day trip on the VIP Catamaran to Isle de Mejures which included snorkeling, a super lunch, swimming, and time to shop on the island. Both were absolutely fabulous. Reservations (and payment) can be made near where they give out beach towels.

Negatives:

Naturally the mixed drinks are watered down. We were surprised that the juices, sauces, and even the ketchup seemed to be as well. If you want a true drink, drink the beer or order a specific drink and alcohol that doesn’t include a sweetened flavor (like a Beefeater gin & tonic, or Jim Beam and ginger ale, or a Jim Beam Manhattan, etc.)

The bar in the room didn’t include any mixtures (that we like) that would go with the alcohol included. The room bar includes rum, tequila, vodka, and [rot gut] brandy. The sodas in the refrigerator are ginger ale, coke, Sprite, and lots of water. We inquired at the desk but the alcohol cannot be exchanged with anything else. On the plus side, the alcohol is refilled every two days, the refrigerator is stocked each day, and you can always bring drinks up from the bar.

The specialty restaurants are a waste of time. We ate at the Brazilian, the French, and the American Steak house. In all cases, the food available in the regular buffet was far superior with many more choices. The night we were eating ½ inch thick, tasteless beef in the steak house, beef Wellington was one of the items cut to order in the buffet restaurant.

The wine is terrible. The only wines available are a red, a white and a rose. All are terrible if you are into good wine. The champagne (Spanish) is OK.

The coffee is terrible. It is served with available hot milk.

If you have a room on the 1st or 3rd floor (our floor) you have great views of everything from your balcony only if you stand up. While sitting, a large concrete railing with pillars underneath blocks the water view right at the horizon.

While lots of bottled cool water is provided in the room, the water from the tap is not potable.

Suggestions:

Bring your beach towel up to your room after you finish for the day rather than turn it in. Get up the next morning at 6:00 and reserve a beach chair by putting your towels on them. There are always chairs available later in the day, but the prime spots are gone by 6:30 a.m.

Bring American money. They have calculators at all shops and will be fair in the exchange. When you are given change, ask for it in US dollars.

Final Words

We have been on several international trips but this is so far, one of the best and most relaxing. We would return in a nanosecond.

Room Tip: Avoid the 1st and 3rd floors. A large concrete railing blocks your view unless you are standing up.

Myself and my friends arrived here at the Riu on February 16th for a weeks stay and we have to say from the moment we arrived the service was second to none. Upon check in at reception we were told we had been upgraded to a full sea view suite from our standard suite and having drifted over to the bar for a quick drink before going to our room we were pleased to find all the drinks were imported top shelf spirits, with a good selection of each. Having moved to our room we were pleased to find them spacious and very clean, also our bags had beaten us there and left for us to unpack. The view from the room was fantastic taking in the pool and the sea beyond, the room was also nicely stocked in the mini bar with optics on the wall. The dining in the hotel was very good with a selection of al la carte restaurants and a general buffet, do have to say though that generally we found more food to our liking in the buffet than the other restaurants, although we did really enjoy the Mexican restaurant. Very nice at breakfast and lunch to be able to sit in the outside area, (which changes to the steak restaurant in the evenings) and have your meal. Regarding the pools, both are on the small side compared to other hotels we have been to and the beach area is also quite small with parts of it losing the sun quite early due to it disappearing behind the hotel.
Having said all that the staff were marvellous the cleaners worked tirelessly the waiters buzzed round like bees and basically anything that could be done for you to enjoy your stay was taken in their stride, a special thank you though to Amlikar, (hope we got that right) for your continuous and exceptional service on the beach .
Well done all the Riu staff for an excellent holiday, see you again.

Room Tip: Sea views worth the extra, with the doors open you can hear the sea lapping away at the shore all ni...

The minute you step into the lobby and see the view, across the infinity pool, between gleaming white domes into bands of turquoise water, your feet just stop moving. You must stand there and absorb the beauty. It is a feast for the eyes...the view from the lobby, our favorite outdoor bar, the pool, the balcony, the sundeck; all gleaming white and shades of blue and green. The staff was amazingly friendly and remembered us from day to day...our drinks arriving without error to the table as we sat down for breakfast on the second day. When we said the beds were hard, pillow tops were added. I guess if I had to complain about something it would be the limited evening activities, the theater seeming to be in some disrepair and the fact that the room safe took a key...keys are a little hard to keep track of. Would I go back? Probably...just I prefer Playa del Carmen to Cancun.

A short easy drive from Cancun airport. Unsure of what to expect as we were dropping off numerous guests at mediocre resorts along the way; until there was only the two of us left. The late modeled white cargo van with extra seating pulled up to the most beautiful classy hotel imaginable. From the welcoming and sharply dressed doorman, to the extremely helpful and pleasant front desk staff. Our room was ready upon arrival, upgraded to partial ocean view on the 5th floor. The lobby was jaw dropping. Marble columns, decorated cathedral ceilings and woodwork that could make museums jealous. Albeit i agree there was a musty smell in the lobby, but i preferred to consider the smell as a fragrant wood odor. The room is large, marble washroom and shower, step down to the living area and balcony. The balconies are pretty private, but accessible from neighboring suites if one was so maliciously inclined, therefore simply keep door locked when not in the suite.
The pools were very well-maintained, refreshing and clean. No trouble finding a chair on the property. The beach is small, but beautifully perfect. White sand, crashing waves, aqua blue water and very swimmer friendly. Again no trouble finding a chair.
Housekeeping, quick and efficient, smiling and courteous. Towel art everyday, fridges stocked daily with extras of what you actually use more of. Four premium brand bottles In a glass case to dispense at your leisure. Was nice to enjoy the room with a few drinks. This is one place where you can actually relax in your room, sit on your balcony with a coffee, we watched an entire movie on the flat screen t.v. Was like being at home. Never hurried out of our room by housekeeping for hours on end. There was again, a humid odor to the room, you get used to it, even though after washing clothes the smell remains. But a little reminder of a great vacation when you wear them.
The hotel itself is classy, people dress accordingly and behave very well. Those who didn't were very noticeable. The restaurants and service was impeccable. Quick and alert staff always aiming to please. English was never a problem. Staff seemed happy and took pride in the hotel. Never bothered for timeshares, unsure if there are timeshares on property because we didn't see them.
Entertainment was fantastic. Unusual for resorts. Everything from management on stage dancing, which was fun, to professional dance troupes, professional mariachi band and a great Karaoke night. Games by the pool were fitting, nothing obscene or juvenile. Music and trivia as well. Of course if you prefer less excitement you have the most beautiful infinity pool with large padded loungers and canopies.
Food prep and safety keenly observed. Always hot, and covered. Obsessively maintained buffet. Spoons changed, rearranged ,always freshened and wiped up. And most of the food was prepared right in front of you by the chefs in the center of the outdoor buffet. Staff is vigilante and quick to deny access to persons without a shirt or appropriate and sanitary attire within food areas.
There is no entertainment or nightclub after the 10pm show. You have to go to the Riu Cancun next door for the nightclub, but you are in Cancun directly on the strip, tons of choices for one price all inclusive nightclubs and of course Coco Bongos. Shopping mall across the street is perfect. Everything from D&G to Lacoste. (unsure of authenticity) But well-priced and quality items for sure. I would avoid the strip mall, taxis and promoters. We took the R1 bus, brings you everywhere and is completely safe. 17 pesos i believe it was. Again, being two young males offers of drugs and prostitutes outside the resort were overwhelming. We just wanted to see chichen Itza, and we got a catalogue of naked women to choose from. But again this has nothing to do with the resort, just a heads up not to be shocked when receiving such offers. Decline and say no thank-you.
All in all, a classy place, beautiful people, staff and guests, quiet, definitely not a spring-break destination. The grounds are immaculate and constantly being painted and cleaned up. This hotel was built with quality in mind, attention to detail and furnished appropriately. May not return to Cancun for a while, but definitely a Riu Palace anywhere in the world.
