“Always The Best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2012

We own a timeshare at the Royal Sunset and have gone there every year for the past 9 years with our 2 grown sons and 2 friends. We always look forward to Cancun and seeing the same staff year after year. Most of them have been there since we have been visiting, so it feels like family when we arrive and throughout our stay. Our drinks and food are prepared for us the way we like it - even before we even ask. The service is excellent at all the restaurants, concierge desk and spa (oohh the spa!). Special thanks to Anna our wonderful concierge, Guadalupe and Roberto in the Aquarium, Luiz and Ramon at the awesome beach club!!, Carlos the most professional/friendly maitre'd, Felix the most friendly front desk person anywhere (and we have been MANY places), and to Marisol, Arturo and Samuel for their great enthusiasm in entertaining everyone. There are many others whom we undoubtedly have missed - but thanks to all who made our yearly vacation to the Royal Sunset in Cancun, the greatest vacation that it always is. The only complaints we would have would be the music at the beach club - the morning music was very soothing but by the afternoon it was VERY loud. I would suggest keeping it more low key. The issue with the wifi was a bit annoying because our kids had expected to use their computers to check work emails - we made do, and I guess while on vacation maybe everyone should just turn off all their electronics, but it was a bit of an issue with them.
Also...our good friend Congo who sold silver on the beach there every year- was not allowed to do so because of the management. We sought him out anyway- it shouldn't be a big deal. All in all - a wonderful vacation as alway!!!

Room Tip: Don't get a floor at pool level

I was very pleased with the service we had at the hotel. we were treated very courteously by the front desk staff and the concierge staff. I do have a few complaints one being the loud pounding music on the beach. I wanted to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. The other complaint I have was I had a few pieces of jewelry stolen from our room (room 504). I had them put away in my carry on bag and found them both missing when I got home. One was a freshwater pearl necklace and the other was an opal necklace ,blue in color. I have emptied my suitcase, carry on bag, and my purse and they did not come home with me. The pearl necklace had to have been taken on Saturday as I had it Friday night in the room. The opal necklace I bought at Chi Chen Itza on Wednesday and didn't see it again so I believe it was taken sometime after that. I hope you will look in to this and try and get them back for me. I paid $15.00 American for the pearl necklace and $23.00 American dollars for the opal one. If I can't get the necklaces back I would like to be reimbursed for them. Please check with your cleaning staff for that week and the people bringing in the coffee. Thank-you in advance for the prompt attention to this matter.

It is a pleasure to learn that you had a great vacation during your stay at Sunset Royal.

Feedback is very important for us since it enables us to make positive changes where needed and your comments about the music were passed to the person in charge to take immediate action. We are sorry about your missing pieces of jewelry; to avoid these incidents, we have safe deposit boxes in the rooms where you can keep your personal valuables.

We will be happy to welcome you back on your next trip to Cancun.

Be Advised: If you aren't staying here as a part of your timeshare, they will try to sell you a timeshare. A 90 minute presentation equals 4-5 hours.

The short version: Resorts like this are a dime a dozen in Cancun, a bit of glitz on the exterior and a lack of substance on the inside, located on stunning beaches.

The rooms are nice, beds are very comfortable, kitchenette is functional. The restaurant is a bit limited, but decent food though overpriced. The all-inclusive plan isn't really worth it. The pool is quite small and pretty much useless, but the beach is amazing. That is probably the one selling point of this place.

We stayed on the 8th floor with a view of the beach and ocean, the view was fabulous. The entertainment provided is rather cheesy, but if you're bored enough, worth sitting through. The location is pretty decent, really a short walk to most restaurants etc, but of course everything is tourist priced and lots of aggressive vendors.

The service you get is pretty much standard, of course done in hopes of earning tips. Everyone is happy to do something for you for a few dollars out of your pocket.

Would I stay here again? Maybe, but only for the beach, not for the hotel itself. Nothing about this hotel made me think "I have to come back here again!".

Room Tip: Get a central room, higher up is better.

Spent 4 days at Royal Sunset April 4-8, 2012. The place is really small and there's nothing to do during the day except a small pool. The floor in our room was rather dirty and full of sand. The buffets are very small and primitive. Restaurant food was OK but not great.

Evening shows were good, but not spectacular, and only on weekdays. There was no kid's club, even though it's advertised. I saw in some review that there's one massage included in the package, but they only offered a $30 credit towards the spa use, and cheapest service at the spa was $55. We also wanted to try kayak rental, supposedly included in the package. Turned out it's only available at the sister resort (Sunset Lagoon), but was closed anyway because of rough water conditions.

On the second day my daughter got food poisoning, not clear from what source, but she did not consume anything other than resort's restaurant food and bottled water. She vomited all night, and we had to take a taxi to a local pharmacy just one block away, where there was a free doctor available for consultation.

The high point of our stay was taking a ferry to Isla Mujeres - the sister resort, Sunset Lagoon, is less than 10 minutes walk from Playa Tortugas, where the ferries leave. Unfortunately both the ferries, and the shuttles between Royal and Lagoon each only go once an hour, so this trip involved a lot of waiting. Besides, there is essentially no food available at the resorts between 4, when lunch ends, and 6, when dinner starts.

It was our second return to Royal Sunset, this time we stayed for two weeks. Our room was
located on the 9th.floor with balcony and view on the sea.The room was specious ,room service
was great. They have two restaurants - one is a buffet and other regular ordering from the menu.
The buffet section have variety of items starting with eggs, bacon (you have to ask for ) warm
meat's and than you move to cold section which have almost everything. If someone is complaining about that set-up than they should not pick the all inclusive plan. The regular restaurant you have to make a reservation ahead of time but their menu is also great starting
with breakfast items and going thru the lunch and dinner. In both restaurants the service is also
great. While dinning in the menu restaurant be sure to have Mayan coffee. Wonderful show
to finish your dinning experience. The beach is one of the best in Cancun. They serve light
lunch items and drinks that could be picked up by yourself or you could ask one of the servers
to bring whatever you want to your spot on the beach. Recommend to stop by the spa and use
their services. It's a large hotel and lot's of people from around the globe, they are busy, so on
occasion someone could forget some request but it's normal and it happen even in five stars
hotels.Hotel personnel starting at the lobby and finishing on the beach servers are very
friendly, eager to help. One must understand that this is time share hotel and the low prices for
lodging and food compensate for the sales pitch to buy time share. You also could rent the car right in the hotel with low rates. I would recommend this hotel to anyone!

Room Tip: Any room above 7th floor with balcony and view of the sea.
