“Very Good Budget-Conscious AI in Hotel Zone”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

A few friends and I stayed at GP at the end of March 2012. We researched places we could stay at the sub-$250 level, and Golden come up often.

First of all, the service from top to bottom is excellent. Everyone, from the reservation, the concierge, the waitstaff, and housekeeping were exceptionally helpful and polite. Very welcoming from the get go.

The property is smack in the middle of the Hotel Zone, so the beach and water are of similar quality to other nearby resorts. The sand is kept clean and the water is swimmable, though red flags were out each of the days we were there.

The pool and beach bars aren't as extensive as you might expect from an AI, but it's small by Cancun standards (only a hundred or so rooms). The bartenders are very responsive, but you will have to wait during certain parts of the afternoon and late night when they get busy.

We did eat at all four of the restaurants, and the all-day buffet. Everything I tried was very good, but nothing was absolutely spectacular. I can recommend the coconut shrimp at Pier 12, and the cheese and herb crusted chicken at Shangri-La (their one dress code restaurant; everything else is come as you are).

The room was reasonable, though there were a few minor quibbles. I had a lagoon side junior suite, and found everything satisfactory. The A/C does cool things down, but it doesn't really get that ice-cold dry air, which would've been welcome after a warm humid day. I did ask maintenance to address it, but I'm not sure anything was ever done. And the shower door seems to let a lot of water into the bathroom floor. Lighting could be improved, but frankly this doesn't come up much on a tropical vacation, right?

Can't comment on the spa, as none of our party used it. I should mention that most wines in the restaurants are not included in the AI package, and will be billed to your room. It wasn't a problem for us, and there are some house wines that are included that I found completely palatable.

All in all, a very likeable small AI that will not wow you in many respects but does serve value-minded travelers well.

My husband and I, ages 34 and 29, loved this resort! We stayed in room 616, on the top floor (sixth floor). We arrived at the hotel at 12pm from the airport and although our room wouldn't be ready until 3pm, we were given braclets so we could move about the resort freely. They showed us to the bar and then to a restaurant for lunch. We had no trouble getting our room at 3pm. It was a Club Room, which there is a complete review listed a few days before this one on here that sums that experience up completely! It was full ocean view, jacuzzi in the room, stocked mini fridge and a romantic in room gourmet meal from Shang ri La. I have to agree that the in room meal was drawn out, as the waiter had to run back and forth between our room and the restaurant.

I agree that the lobby is loud at night, even from the sixth floor, but it didn't really interefere with our sleeping. Actually, after the first night, we decided to go down and see what all the buzz was about, and had a GREAT time at the tiki bar with everyone else! People are so friendly and the bartenders are amazing. We brought $100 in ones, even though tipping isn't required nor expected, and we thought the tips were well earned. We didn't eat at Sumo, and only at Shang ri la for our in room meal. Old Barn was our favorite with steaks and baked potatoes. :) Pier 12 was pretty good seafood, and the little beach grill had burgers and fries from 11am-6am!

We did a full day tour to Chichen Itza. It was educational and I'm glad we got to see it, but it does take a full 12 hours, the drive there is 2.5 hours each way. And I was so disappointed to find out that you can no longer go into the pyramid there, or climb it. That's since 2007 when it became one of the "New 7 wonders of the World."
We also did the LUnch Cruise, through Golden P that was part of the Club Room package. It was definately more like a booze cruise, but it was fun. We tend to be a little on the shy side, so when he had to drink beer through a straw while I was spanking him, we were a little anxious, but in the end it was definately more fun than it was embarrassing. Everyone was drinking, laughing, and having a good time.
My husband was very apprehensive about traveling to Mexico, but he found it to be very americanized. We didn't have to be selective with our eating, the water is filtered, even in the room sinks. We never exchanged to pesos, as US$ were accepted everywhere. We were amazed at the diverse group of travelers that come to Cancun. We met people from all over the world.
We had gone to Mexico with a little fear about safety and had decided we wouldn't be leaving the resort. After getting there and talking with the staff and other visitors, we felt much safer. We went to Chichen Itza, on the Lunch Cruise on the Lagoon, and even took the public bus to La Isla (the mall). We will definatly be returning to the Golden P. in the years to come!!

Room Tip: Go to the Tiki bar after 9pm at least one night, you will not be sorry!

Traveled march 31st to April 7th.
I have been to 5 other resorts in 3 countries, ranging from 3.5 star to 5 + star all inclusive, and this was the best time i have ever had. The food was amazing, The entertainment staff were amazing, cool, very friends guys, and gorgeous, super sweet females. (Denise, Lucy, and Lisa). My group, which consisted on couples and singles, all had something fun to do all day.
During the day, there was always a fun game of water volleyball, tequila darts, beach volleyball, tequila volleyball, water beer pong... etc... once the sun goes down, you eat then hit the tiki bar were you will for sure make new friends. Everyone was very friendly and very welcoming. If you want to do more then the entertainment staff are also reps for the night clubs and they go out with you and party with you. I went out 3 night to the party strip, mandala, Senior frogs, and the city... you get transportation and a bottle service included in your price.

My room was comfortable and clean, and even though i was usually one of the last ones up i was never bothered by an noise at any time.
the staff is great and friendly, no pressure to tip other then a self conscience. This people work hard and long, make very little, but yet look, act, and no doubt feel happy and great doing what they do.
By the second day these will know your name, remember it. For those who were there this is the Nick half of the Nick/ Greg duo.... email me if you questions and if you were there and i didn't trade contact info message me also, if you please.

Room Tip: if you are reserved try the higher floors and maybe even the lagoon side

We just returned last night from the Golden and the trip was great. We met a ton of new people and regrouped with friends from last year. The room was great...upgraded to a Golden Club Oceanview! The staff is what makes this resort.....hola to Jose the greatest Tiki Bar tender and Guilleremo who poured us many a drink at Fins Up! It was awesome to see Marina again and meet Monica and Oscar. Carlos is also an amazing staff member! They are truly what makes this resort great!

The weather was perfect....two weeks and not a drop of rain! We ate at all the restaurants many times and were never disappointed!

We stayed from March 25th through April 1st and loved every minute. The staff was so attentive and friendly that you really wanted to tip them although it wasn't required. They would help you with anything. The resort was small which we liked. Not a fancy place by any stretch but definitely very clean. I'll give a brief rundown of all categories.
Room- We booked a club ocean room and the view was amazing. We had a hot tub which was funl to chill out in. They also gave us fruit and champagne. The mini fridge was stocked daily with beer, water, sodas and juices. Everything was very clean and modern. The lighting was fine in our bathroom and only a bit dim in the main area. The closet was spacious. Although the safe required a manual lock (rather than the normal pin code) it did the job. We received a free lunch cruise with the club room which turned out to be really fun. It was more of a booze cruise with drinking games and dancing. We would definitely recommend it if you like to party. We also received a dinner in the room which ended up being good, but rather drawn out. It might be better for older couples who like to keep to themselves. We hung out with new friends in a standard lagoon view room as well and their room seemed just as nice but didn't have as many bells and whistles.
Beach- beautiful sand and ocean. It was very spacious and well groomed. There were always plenty of chairs but if you need a papalla you should get there before nine. Wait staff serviced the beach frequently but the beach bar was never too far away.
Pool- the entertainment staff did a great job keeping the party going with various interactive activities. We really liked pool beer pong and tequila volley ball. There seemed to always be enough chairs and you could even bring them in the shallow area of water. Wait staff also serviced this area but the tiki bar is right there if you need it.
Food- We enjoyed all the restaurants. My favorite was sumo, it had a good sushi and cooked food selection. My fiancé liked the old barn best especially the filet. Shangra la was good but I did find the sauces on the entrees to be a bit heavy for my taste. Pier 4 was also tasty but service was a bit slow on the night that we went. The breakfast and lunch buffets were decent and seemed to have something for everyone. The breeze cafe was great for late night snacks. All in all you have to remember that it's an all inclusive resort in Mexico and food won't be comparable to your favorite restaurant back home. I don't go on vacation for the food so my rating of the resort would not be based on that.
Entertainment- the entertainment staff is the best I've seen at an all inclusive. They really seem to get to know everyone and are always available to the guests. The games that they organize are definitely party and adult oriented which we liked. The Michael Jackson show was good and the performers were very talented. We also saw the Elvis show which was really funny and Carlos did a great job as Elvis. We didn't see the grease show but heard good things about it. Karaoke in the sixties bar was funny to hear ad watch.
Nightlife- almost every night the tiki bar seemed to be the place to go to party. The bartenders there are awesome. They were very generous with shots and even try getting girls on the bar for body shots. They have their own party cd's and also let anyone plug their iPod in for the bar to listen to. The sixties bar was always pretty dead later in the evening but it was fun to play pool there after dinner. Every night the entertainment crew sponsors a trip out to downtown cancun to one of the clubs. You pay a set amount and get transportation to the club, VIP entrance and seating and unlimited bottle service. You are responsible for getting home. Coco bongo and senior frogs also sponsor trips similar to this on select nights through the resort. We went with the entertainment staff to Bulldog one night. It was a very fun night however my fiancée got too dunk and we had to leave earlier than I would have liked. We payed $9 for the cab ride home.
Guests- the people we met at this resort were the nicest I've ever met. It just seemed like most of the guests were interested in chatting and getting to know new people. Hardly anyone came off as stuffy and everyone seemed to be in a partying and fun mood. If you're more interested in having a quiet and romantic vacation you could do that as well. There were definitely areas to relax and escape other people.
Staff- AMAZING, I'm serious you will want to tip them. They are all hard workers especially the bartenders, maids and concierge (we loved Maru).

We had no issues checking into the room that we had booked nor did we meet anyone who had this problem or hear of anyone being bumped to the great parnassus.

All in all we had a wonderful vacation thanks to the golden parnassus and we will definitely be back : ). My one regret was that we booked an all day excursion to Isla Mujeres (it was okay but we would have rather been at the golden all day).

Room Tip: Choose a club room if you want a mini fridge and hot tub. Also you get a fun lunch cruise (skip the...
