I have mixed feelings about this resort. I had only stayed at one all-inclusive before, eight years ago, at an Iberostar in Playa del Carmen. I booked the Royal Solaris because of the inexpensive rates. And when we saw it was all-inclusive, right on the beach, with air-conditioning and wifi available, we thought, "How bad could it be?" So, let me just say what's so:
1) Wifi: It is "available" but not included. It's an additional $16.00 PER DAY, PER DEVICE. We had two iPhones, two iPads, and two laptops, but we opted to have only one device connected. (For the record, we're on an extended trip, also working from the road.)
2) Food: I'm not a picky eater, but the food here was far less quality than what we expected. Even in their "fine dining" restaurant, which requires reservations. That said, by day two, we figured out the good stuff and found our way around. The coffee is weak. It'll take you a few cups to get the job done. Some other tips: I recommend staying away from the juice machines, and instead order the jugo verde (green juice) from the waiters. Also, their ice cream is some of the best ice cream I've ever had. It's not the watery custard-style, commonly found in all-you-can-eat types of places. It's REAL ice cream...and it's delicious. For breakfast, skip the already prepared egg dishes in the buffet tins, and instead go see the egg guy in the corner who cracks them and whips them up fresh, however you'd like. The only prepared food I'd recommend for breakfast are their chilaquiles. Also, their plain yogurt with fresh fruit and granola makes a great, healthy, tasty combination. Most of their pastries are not worth the time, energy, and calories. If you need a sweet fix, ice cream is where it's at. I can't speak about any of the meat dishes, since we eat only the fish, and this place almost turned me off of fish completely. The only way I got by was on their vegetarian dishes. Their bean salads are awesome. And their pasta salads are pretty solid. My favorite dinner was their Italian night, but again: don't get the already prepared dishes. Go to the chef in the back who is serving up fresh pasta and get it the way you want, with the sauce you want, and the toppings you want. It was delicious! As for cocktails, one of my favorites that's hard to mess up is the Paloma (tequila and Squirt). We found one bartender who makes amazing mojitos, but if you don't find the "right" guy, all the rest of the bartenders make them with this sour mix, and I couldn't seem to get them to not put that in...even speaking in Spanish.
3) Staff: Really nice, friendly, sweet. I have zero complaints. Very nice service!
4) Location: Amazing. It's at the south end of the strip in Cancun, which means you'll be one of the first dropped off by a shuttle from the airport, but also means that is not by anything else, except other resorts. Most of the shops, restaurants, bars, etc. are at the north end, about six miles away. We walked up to the main area and back each way, and we felt very safe the whole time. Their are shuttles and taxis available, but we wanted to get our exercise in. The sidewalks are really great; we were impressed by this. The only thing to look out for is if you're walking on the lagoon side, you will likely be startled many times by giant iguanas who start to scurry as you walk by. This, coupled with all of the "crocodile" signs, makes for an interesting and funny adventure.
5) Room: The AC is strong...sometimes too strong. Beds were fairly comfortable. Our view looked out on the ocean side, over the pool area, and was gorgeous.
6) Recreation and amenities: Who doesn't love a swim-up bar? It's great! The pool area is really nice, but they often have the "cruise directors" outside with a microphone, and we'd just rather they play music and/or turn down the volume when they're talking. It. Was. So. Loud. The hot tub is great because a) no kids are allowed, b) it's huge, c) it overlooks the ocean. Definitely hit that.
7) Favorite places to check out in the area: a bar with swings about 5 miles up on the beach, Surfin Burrito (be prepared to spend some money there), Navios Restaurant (very close to the resort, just to the south on the lagoon side).
