“Fun family trip at Ritz Cancun”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2012

We just returned from a fun family trip to the Ritz in Cancun. My wife & I took our 2 sons (ages 9 & 6). Overall, we really enjoyed the vacation. Read below for details.

Fortunately for us, the hotel doesn't allow any of the spring break nonsense found elsewhere. This time of year, spring breakers are everywhere in Canun. However, one of the great things about the Ritz is that there really isn't a need to go anywhere else. Just sit back & relax at your beautiful, very well maintained Ritz on the beach.

The service in the breakfast restaurant (Cafe Mexicano) & poolside was excellent.
One downside was that our waiter in the Lounge/sushi restaurant didn't speak english too well which was a little frustrating but he was a very nice guy.

What was annoying & very unRitz-like was that housekeeping missed a few turndowns at night (thus leaving wet towels in our room) even though we called & requested turndown before leaving for dinner. Additionally, upon checkin, one of our connecting rooms wasn't yet ready & the front desk never delivered keys or got in touch with us to let us know when we could have access to the room. Instead, I ended up calling reception after 6:00 p.m. to check on the room status. Finally, after check-in & finishing an in-room snack, housekeeping never took away the dirty plates even though I called & asked them to. The plates were still in our room when we returned late day from the pool. I expect more from the Ritz. My service rating reflects these shortcomings.

The food at this property was very good. We had room service a few nights & the Ritz does this very well. We really enjoyed the daily breakfast buffet at Cafe Mexicano & its vast array of choices & omlette station. The poolside food was excellent (we loved the red snapper ceviche & had it almost every day for lunch). My wife & I were very pleased with the sushi as well. I wish the hotel had another more casual dining option now that Cafe Mexicano is closed for dinner (because we didn't wish to dine outside in a "wind tunnel" at the more casual restaurant).

The pool area, property & beach were just wonderful. Very clean & staff was always around to attend to your needs (food, towels, moving an umbrella, etc.). I loved taking a dip in the hot tub each day. My boys played in the pool nearly all day. The pool was heated so the temp was always very pleasant.

The boys also took a couple tennis lessons & the tennis pro was fantastic overall & certainly very experienced working with kids. I wish the Ritz had a basketball court & provided some other activities for young boys but I appreciate that this is the Ritz & not Club Med. The kids club (Ritz Kids) was attended by much younger children & was not an option for my boys.

The location of the Ritz is excellent. It's about 15 minutes from the airport. The beach is wide & there is a very good Argentine restaurant across the main road for those looking for other dining options. Also across the main road is a place where you can take excusions (snorkeling, speed boats, etc.) The speed boat - snorkeling excursion was really fun.

The fitness center is good for cardio buffs (lots of options) but there were only about 6 weight machines so this should be beefed up. The weight training options are too limited.

My biggest complaint about the Ritz is that they nickel & dime you for so many things. There is no free WiFi, bottled waters are expensive (the hotel's water is purified but they always push the bottled water so you should buy it at the store right across the street), they charge for fitness center use, tennis racquet use, fun balls sold in the gift shop are expensive & should just be made available for use by the pool (upon leaving we gave the balls we bought to other kids) & transfers provided by the Ritz are about double the cost of just getting your own taxis.

Overall, the Ritz Cancun is a very good property (notwithstanding the service lapses outlined above) & a great value compared to the Caribbean. We'd definitely go back to this resort.

The Ritz Carlton Cancun is really a magnificent place. Everything lloks shining and new. This RC property is one of the best I've ever stayed at. Rooms, service, staff and facilities are perfect!

Plus is very well located in order to enjoy all Cancun's attractions. Make sure you visit the Xel-Ha water park at the mayan riviera is only 45 minutes away from cancun.

This was our first time to Cancun, my boyfriend and I were treated like royalty by everyone from security, frontdesk to waiters. The Hotel itself is pretty decorated and the gardens are absolutely stunning and beautiful.
We stayed in an ocean view room, it have a spacious bathroom and the room itself was spacious too.
The food at the restaurant is tasty and delicious, we tried the guaca and chips and it was awesome. But the menu is a little bit pricey.
Other aspects of the Hotel include a variety of services that are worth it such as the spa, fitness center, pools, restaurants (Fantino’s was our favorite), beach casitas…
The only con I found is that the food is extremely overpriced.
Overall would definitely come back in the future in our next trip to Mexico.

Very comfortable rooms with excellent service. Beach and pool accommodations are great. In the late afternoon, they brought around Tamarind Popsicles - yum! As expected, pricey drinks and food.

When you stay at Ritz Carlton properties around the world, you get used to what they look like, feel like, smell like even. Ten minutes into the wait to check-in, I began to get the feeling that something was not quite right. 24 hours later, one day into a week long stay, we had checked out.

The final straw was a bottle of water. We had asked the Concierge about a day trip to Tulum and Xe-ha. They could organise it apparently, but recommended that we speak to the in-house travel agency for a package deal. The package price we were offered was identical to the Concierge arranged fee - $700. Fair enough but what I had not expected was to be told that "the van will be complete with a cooler and will stop so that you can buy some water" so $700 plus water! This is just not what R-C should allow its brand to be associated with.

There were other similar stories in this money-grabbing resort.

The Internet at $20 per device per day. For a data-hungry family of four with a number of devices, we were looking at close on $1000 to access the Internet for a week. What exactly does this now basic service cost to provide? A back of the envelope calculation - 365 rooms, say 70% occupancy through the year, 1.5 devices per room - that is almost $3 million per year. Justified or not?

If you want a padded sunbed (standard in many other R-C properties) rather than a chipped cheap garden centre bought equivalent, that is $25 for two. Shade - $10 a day for an umbrella.

Finally a good test of how a hotel views its customers is in the signature restaurant. It is always interesting to ask for a wine recommendation within a particular type. It is very unusual to be strongly encouraged to buy the bottle that costs 30% more than any of the others. Incidentally being offered the wine list and being asked to choose the wine before menus have been offered cannot be part of the R-C rule book.

The rooms are fine, but tired. We had a couple of non-working lights and a plug socket falling out of the wall, the black out curtains don't. Beds comfortable etc but really if this is not a R-C that stands any comparison with others in the portfolio. Very disappointing.
