A Perfect Week In Paradise

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Apr 2018
My third time to the Westin Lagunamar Resort. Cannot say enough about this place, from the greeting, "welcome home" upon arrival (I was with an owner, who has been coming for 8+ years, and is known to the staff). The rooms are exquisite and spacious....for a modest additional amount, you can have full cleaning and linens service every day. Several pools on the property, plenty of chaise lounges, plush towels. The spa is divine.....we had massages 3x while there. Yum! Two gym facilities, open 24 hours. A terrific market for conveniences and Starbucks coffee....opens at 6:30 a.m. The main restaurant---Oceano---is open for breakfast (7-11 daily) and dinner. Their theme nights---Maya Night (Saturdays), Mexican Night (Mondays) and Steak Night (Fridays) are all not-to-be-missed. Of particular note, the Maya Night, which had not only regional Mayan cuisine, but a spectacular floor show with amazing production values (my friend and are both theatre snobs, and we were thoroughly impressed.....a very memorable evening). The grounds and premises are kept in immaculate condition. Security is uppermost, and we never felt uncomfortable. We were fortunate to have perfect weather the entire week we were there: 85 by day/75 overnight low/no rain/azure skies. I watched the sunrise each morning and each time it was a revelation. The hotel will arrange for seamless pick up and return to the airport via shuttle--spotless upscale SUV with a well-trained and courteous driver....$45 each way. No wonder the Westin Lagunamar is always completely booked! It is a world class experience. Can't say enough positive about the place. Hope to return in 2019.

This is a gorgeous resort. Nice rooms, most if not all have great ocean views so you do not have to pay extra for that. Very well managed and clean. It is rather compact so everything in the resort is very easily accessible. You can chose from studios (4 people), 1 bedroom (4) and 2 bedroom lockout apartments (8). They all have fully equipped kitchens and washer/drier.

The location is hard to beat in the best North hotel zone and ideal for a resort that is not all inclusive since the La Isla (luxury) mall is 300 ft away, across the street. At the mall you can find many restaurants from fast food to upscale. Other restaurants are within walking distance or a short bus ride (1$ per person), every 5 minutes. Large grocery store within 5 minutes (walking). Also a smaller one on site. The restaurants at the resort are decent to good. Great burgers (i am usually not a burger person). We ended up saving money compared to an all inclusive in Cancun and it was (surprisingly) more convenient since some all inclusive resorts are so big that you have to walk quite a bit to get to the restaurants.

The beach is gorgeous and the infinity pools are some of the nicest i have seen. The staff is amazing. I understand that it is hard to get a job there so people really do their best to keep it.

The drive from the airport is only 15-20 minutes (although it can be 30-40 at rush our). We did not see one mosquito (stayed there in March), for my wife this is a great plus. The wifi internet works great through the resort, we ended up not using roaming at all, just forwarded calls to my VOIP number that works on my cell. I run a business so for me it is important to stay connected.

Room tip: most if not all rooms have gorgeous ocean views. We stayed at the 3rd floor (out of 8 ) and the view was fantastic.

We came for spring break with our 12 and 15 year olds. Everyone had a great time. We had a beautiful view of the pool and the ocean and loved hearing the waves from our villa. Both the villa and the pool/ common areas were nicely decorated and well maintained. Staff was super helpful and villa was great! It was a good location too!!

Room tip: They leave you laundry detergent so you will have enough to do a few loads of wash during your stay.

First visit to Cancun in 14 years. Our last stay was in Playa Carmen so this place is totally different since it's in the hotel zone. Our normal timeshare is in Cabo at Hacienda Del Mar and while we love that place, one of our friends suggested Cancun this time around so we decided to give it a try.

The location of the resort is great. About a 20-30 min ride from the airport whereas our place in Cabo is closer to 40-50 min. The hotel zone is extremely developed and doesn't even feel like Mexico. It feels more like the Vegas strip, one gigantic resort after another. We rent a car every time we go to Cabo but did not feel the need to rent a car here. There is a mall across the street with high end shopping and 20+ restaurants so there is no need to venture far to find what you want.

The grounds of the hotel were very clean. The pools were clean and so was the beach. They can be stricter about reserving seats too long at the pool so be aware of that. They will take your belongings away if you abandon your seat for longer than 45 minutes and signs are posted saying this. This is great if you are looking for a seat by the pool and not so great if you are trying to grab lunch and get back in 45 minutes although the timer doesn't start until they start hanging that tag on your chair. There were definitely a few upset guests who had their chairs taken away but everyone is made aware of this policy from the beginning.

The sandbar is great with a beach volleyball court I spent every day on and a beach that is much safer to play in compared to the ones in Cabo. The waves are still a little rough for little ones but my 10 y.o. could go 50 feet out and still have the water at her waist. The waves in Cabo can drown strong swimmers on red and black flag days so this was a welcoming change to that.

The food at the resort is typical resort food, nothing bad or good and can definitely be overpriced. They let you take your own food into the resort so it's easy enough to run across the street and grab a few things. If you're in the mood for a fancy dinner there are a few choices across the street like Cambalache and La Madonna which were both very enjoyable as well as some very reasonable taco places looking out into the lagoon where the alligators play.

The amenities in the rooms were nice (we stayed in 265). We had a suite with a queen bed and pull out but it also came with a washer dryer and a small kitchen complete with microwave, fridge and small stove top. My lower back complained about the bed after a few days but it was manageable. One thing I could do without was the thin walls in the room. You can very easily hear water running through the pipes so if a neighbour is taking a shower you will definitely hear the pipes through the wall.

All in all a great stay and I would definitely go back. The only thing different I would do is stay in one of their 1 bedrooms next time.

First time to The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort but will not be our last. Abraham and Jorge the waiters at the swim up bar made our trip fantastic. Two wonderful bartenders. Remembered our names offered new drinks to try. They were the best.

Room tip: We were on the top floor, very quite.

I was very disappointed to see how rough the ocean is at the beach. We were not able to swim in the ocean because it was wave after wave. The pools get very crowded and people are allowed to bring their music devices (someone had a suitcase size speaker) and play their own music. One afternoon this included a guest playing music very loud with a curse word every other word,as well as, derogatory terms. I was mortified having my children around listening to this. The staff didn’t seem to mind. We chose to leave the resort during the day and swim after dinner.
