“Can't wait to return!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2012

We just got back today from an 8 day 7 night stay which consisted of myself (23yrs), my husband (24yrs), our 3 young children(4 yrs and 22 month twins), and my parents (40 and 45yrs) and 2 siblings (19yrs and 16yrs). We had such a wonderful stay and can't wait to go back! We had 2 rooms next to each other that were 1 bedroom villas. The rooms were beautiful, super spacious, and very comfortable. It only rained about 2.5 days of our trip and we still had lots of fun. The housekeepers did a great job, but I would recommend leaving a tip every other day and you may get even better service. There is a bus station directly in front of the hotel(8.50 pesos per person, babies on lap are free, so when you tell the driver how many ppl don't include your infant unless you want to pay for them too). There is a little Market in the hotel that I would try to avoid if possible as it is EXTREMELY overpriced (a pack of napkins that would cost 5 pesos anywhere in Tijuana(where I live) cost 47 pesos there!!!) The location of the hotel couldn't have been better, we were only a 2 minute walk to the plaza isla mall which has the interactive aquarium in it. The aquarium wasn't that great compared to the ones in San Diego, CA, but it was ok and the best part was the dolphin show at 7pm. We did lots of activities during the week including para-sailing, Hummer Jungle Tour, Wave runner tour through the mangroves in the lagoon and out into the open ocean to snorkel, 2 trips to Isla Mujeres, shopping at the Flea Market, a few trips downtown to Walmart, Costco, and the movie theater and of course relaxing at the hotel. We also went out to eat at many restaurants including Hacienda Sisal for Sunday Brunch which I HIGHLY recommend(though it is a long wait and they do not take reservations for brunch), Taco Grill in plaza isla, the mexican restaurant above the interactive aquarium in plaza isla, La Habichuela Sunset and saw the Mayan show, La Destileria(a bit pricey and didn't care that much for the food), Coldstone Creamery inside la isla plaza(pricey and not the same as the states), and Crepes Factory(a favorite! Try the Banana Split). I would try to negotiate prices for EVERYTHING, we did and were successful though I speak Spanish and my husband is from Mexico, so that may have helped. All in all it was a great trip and we will be going back again to the same hotel! :)

Room Tip: Request one of the main buildings (4, 5, or 6) and a higher floor (4 and up). We were rooms 442 and...

Just spent 10 days at the Westin Laguna Mar Ocean resort and we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The 1 br Villa was beautiful and spacious with a perfect view of the pool and ocean. The fitness center was large enough and ample so that I did not have to skimp on my daily workout routine. The location is on the major bus routes and in close proximity to all the best shopping and restaurants that Cancun has to offer. The staff is extremely professional and anxious to help in any way to make your stay more pleasant. I recommend this property highly and will definitely return to it myself in the near future.

Midway through our vacation on the day after our room was cleaned we discovered our room safe was open and money was missing from the safe and from a wallet that was left in the bedroom. We promptly reported it to security staff and have gotten nothing, but the run around from security and staff managers. It's going on six hours and we've yet to be contacted in our room with information if someone accessed our room while we were gone or only when cleaning staff was here. The afternoon front desk manager has been condescending and rude when we inquired if anything had been found out after four hours. It is obvious the theft was done by someone with access and who is familiar with the hotel as not all the cash was taken, but partial amount so as not to draw attention to quickly. Due to the lack of service not with just this instance I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL TO ANYONE. When we asked for a suggestion as to how to keep our extra cash and valuables safe in our room as the room safe obviously isn't safe they offered no suggestions or assistance. We are so disappointed in our stay here and it has put a huge damper on my daughters graduation trip.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel.

We were at the Westin Lagunamar for a week in May. We loved everything about the resort without exception! It feels like a brand new hotel, which I believe it is actually the case. It is very clean. The pools and views are breathtaking and the staff extremely helpful and friendly. May is a great time to go because is not as crowded, which I think helps with it all also.

Before going, we read a lot about the hotel here at Tripadvisor. There were some complaints about construction noise, kids being noisy at the pool, slow service and other small things. Aside from the kids, which are expected on a family resort and did not bother us in any way, we did not see any of the rest. We stayed at a high floor, the view was unbelievable.
We did call a couple of times to request extra blankets and they were promptly delivered, so we do not have any complaints in any of those departments.
I believe the A/C is not located within the room, so it was so quiet that the little refrigerator was the one making some, but bearable noise at night.

We did not eat much at the hotel, in fact we did not eat there at all other that some snacks in our room, so I cannot tell you about the restaurants. The drinks on the pool were ok. We ordered a few virgin drinks for our teenage girls and did not get very impressed with them, but the staff was very nice and did not push anything at all.
One concern when you travel is always water quality. We talked to hotel staff and locals and they were all surprised that we were concerned to get sick because of the water. We did have many drinks, lemonade, etc that had water in them while there and did not have any problems. We did drink bottle water most of the time though, just because. Food was the same way, no problems there either and we ate in different local mom and pop little places.

The beach was super clean and nice, cabanas were available without problem as it was a slow time. They have life guards on duty that will blow the whissle at you if you are getting too close to some reef rocks that are located towards the left side of the beach. They then guide you to the right side where a nice sand bar exists and is a good spot to get in the water.

Do not get turned off by the timeshare pitch you might get from the concierge staff. They are just doing their job. If you are not interested, just let them know. They will respect you and will not try pushing you into a meeting you do not want to be in. Still you get some pretty good advice and tips if you decided to go have a chat with them. It is a great time to ask questions if you are a first timer like us.

Finally, two pieces of advice. Exchange money at the hotel only if you have immediate need for it. If you go to a bank 300 yards away, you can get as much as 1 to 1.5 pesos per dollar more. If you are exchanging 200 dollars, you can end up with as much as 300 more pesos in your pocket, or about 23 dollars or so. It is about 10 to 15% more for your hard earned money.
Second: Do not, unless you have to, get money from the ATM at the hotel. If you do, go ahead and take a picture of yourself being officially ripped off. You will cost you more than you are prepared to pay. The ATM is independently operated by some greedy bank, so I cannot fully blame the Westin. I did use the ATM inside a bank in Isla Mujeres but although there was a fee, I did not have to mortgage my house to pay it. :-)

So for us, it was a week of sun, beach, food and good times around Cancun. The local people everywhere was very warm and friendly. We will go back for sure!

Room Tip: Get a high floor for a better view!

We stayed a week in a studio unit and thouroughly enjoyed our stay. The kitchenette was well stocked and we were able to enjoy several meals in our unit. The location of the property is ideal, right across the street from a large mall & aquarium. We visited the mall daily for different reasons. The gym on property is large and the locker rooms are professional.
The pools are clean and large, with plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas for everybody.
The staff were very helpful and courteous.
The only "con" of the property is that it is SO large that to go anywhere it si a long walk. We didn't mind, but if you are a person that isn't accostomed to daily excersise, request a room closer to the center of the property.
I definately would reccomend this hotel to anyone traveling to Cancun.

Room Tip: Choose a room close to the lobby if you don't want to walk a lot each trip to your room.
