“Perfect beach vacation...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2012

I rented two villas (equivalent to the 2 bedroom full lock-off villa) for my family of 6. Me, Wife, 3 kids (9,12,13) and my Mom.

The studio villa was occupied by my mother and oldest daughter. The rest of the family occupied the 1bedroom + full kitchen villa.

It was clean and spacious. The decoration is done with taste and sobriety. We were provided with a 300 pesos taxi ride to the Superama to fill the fridge up (the dedicated taxi driver waits 1h in the parking lot). I was able to feed the family of 6 for a week at 170 USD using one of the BBQ in the courtyard and the full kitchen in the villa. We went two nights and two lunches at restaurants: Fish Fritanga (cheap but excellent), Johnny Rocket (bad! avoid), Fred's House (expensive, delicious, outstanding service) and Captain Hook (restaurant on a pirate ship!)

The prices at the bar, the grill and the market inside the resort are reasonable also. So it did not cost a fortune getting fed. I ended up paying 200$ less than expected on food and alcohol.

All and all, a great vacation. The wife, mother, father (who surprised everyone by showing up), and kids loved it.

We did not visit much of Cancun. The family went to Tulum and Xel-Ha in one day, and I went snorkeling solo at the mornig glory tour the day after.

The rest of the time, we enjoyed the magnificent pool, the ping pong and pool tables, the mini-putt, the volley-ball games, the beach soccer games and the waves.

I recommend trying at least once. We loved our 2011 hawaii vacation a bit more though.

Room Tip: Pretty much all the rooms face the ocean. So you do not have to be picky.

All I can say is that we had a beautiful, well equiped villa with a queen size bed, kitchen with anything we needed, bathroom I want in my house, and a fantastic view. I don't think there was a villa that had a bad view. The staff were wonderful, the restaurants were great. The location was perfect. I'd go back again!

This hotel is freaking amazing. Really wish we could have stayed longer, or forever :) The staff were very friendly and helpful. Transportation from the airport was on time and safe. The infinity pool was huge and BEAUTIFUL! The pool bar makes it even better! One of the bartenders, Felipe, was THE MAN! Make sure to tip him well, and he will take care of you for the rest of your vacation. Also make sure to get a double shot of Don Julio when you get there if you want to have a really good time. The only bad thing I would say is that the hot tub wasn't hot but who cares? You get a jacuzzi in your room anyways! Our room was very pretty - it had everything that we needed and more. Housekeeping does a great job. Our view wasn't the best since it was a lower floor and the trees blocked the view to the ocean, but we still had a great time. Everything there was breathe takingly beautiful. The restaurants at the hotel are muy bueno! We had a buffet for breakfast and dinner. All you can eat, and delicious food for a good price. The waiters were very efficient, quick, and friendly. If you know Spanish, that's a plus - they really like that. Make sure to catch the sunrise in the morning. It's absolutely amazing so you don't want to miss it. Overall this hotel was definitely worth it and we WILL be back! :)

We recently returned from our 5 day stay at the Westin Lagunamar to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary (kids stayed at home)!! Wonderful and relaxing resort. I cannot say enough good things about this resort.

The Good:
- The infinity pool was absolutely wonderful. You could float around all day with perfect unobstructed views of the ocean and beach. Plenty of beach chairs were available, not much shade though. But you’re probably not there to sit in the shade. The pool temperature was fine. Not too cold, definitely heated, but cool enough.
- The waitstaff at the pool and beach were super friendly and always accommodating. After a couple days, some of the staff even remembered our names and what we usually ordered. Very nice. The food was ok, not bad but not great. It worked for an easy lunch or snack while soaking up the sun. The drinks were pretty good. Light on the booze, but reasonably priced.
- The beach in Cancun is beautiful, clear blue waters with a nice ocean breeze. There are a couple dozen thatch palapas that are first come, first served scattered across the beach in front of the resort, along with another dozen or so regular umbrellas. Plenty of beach chairs as well. As one reviewer mentioned, they could be placed a little closer to the beach, but not a deal killer. The waves were a little rough while we were there, but I don’t know if that’s the norm. Most of the waterfront was closed except for about a 50 yard swath watched by a life guard. You could still walk out 100 or so yards and still be in waist deep water, so it was not too bad. Do be careful of the undertow though. From what I understand, this is pretty much the same across the entire hotel zone beachfront.
- The rooms: Very nicely appointed and fairly modern. Basically, the rooms are two-bedroom lockoffs. This means you get either a one bedroom with a living room or a studio. We were in the one bedroom portion and were very comfortable with the accomodations. They say that every room has a beach view and they’re right. We were in building 5 which basically looked over the whole pool area and the beach.

The Bad:
- The Check-In folks. What is their deal? Cold, aloof and not quite with it is all I can use to describe them. As another review said, everything after checking in was perfect!! Westin, you really need to address this.
- The Wi-Fi. One word: Terrible. Sporadic disconnects, spotty coverage and sloooooowww. There is an Ethernet port in the room which worked fine, but as I was using an iPad, that was not an option. It seemed that I was able to get a better experience either out on the balcony or by the pool, but even then it was still inconsistent. Not sure what the problem was, but I didn’t really worry too much about this as I was there to be a bum.

All I can say is that we are already planning our trip to this resort for next year!!

Thank you Westin Lagunamar for a wonderful and relaxing 10th wedding anniversary!!! We'll see you next year.

Room Tip: All rooms have some sort of an ocean view. Rooms in buildings 14 and up are the newest phase.

The Lagunamara is pretty enough; big; lovely infinity pools, lovely beach with chairs and umbrellas. The staff is fantastic, from Concierge to wait staff - really they all get Gold Stars. BUT the hotel lies to you. We called twice with the specific question: Do you have wi-fi?The answer was: In all rooms, of course! The wi-fi in the lobby barely worked. After 3 days of calling, the IT guy finally admitted that there really was no wi-fi in the building we were staying in (Building 1). It's the lying that upsets me. And speaking of lying, we had to listen to a rap on buying a unit - the reason we got a really reasonable deal on 4 days. Turns out the salesman actually lied by ommisison about the price of the units. We do not like lying; we did not buy a unit. The "business center" - where you supposedly could print boarding passes, had no way to print and no instructionss telling you to go to the Concierge to do the printing. Good grief! Also, nothing to do unless you simply want to lie on the beach/around the pool. There is a shopping center across the street - very convenient. If you want a pretty beach, and just to see the sun, go ahead and visit Lagunamara. I see no reason to go back. And understand it's very expensive if you are not one of the "chosen" who get to hear the lying presentation on buying a unit.

Room Tip: Looks like all rooms have good views of ocean and/or pool and they all seem to have balconies. No wi...
