⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The best museum in Oaxaca that takes you though the history of the state, starting with the indigenous, through Spanish conquest and though today. A beautiful building providing wonderful picture opportunities of Oaxaca and the Ethnobotanical gardens. Glad we saved the best for last!

A visit to the Museum of Cultures was a valuable way to better understand the culture and history of the region. The displays are well done and very informative. We enjoyed the walk through the beautiful courtyards and the magnificent views of the botanical gardens and the mountains.

Lovely view as well over the botanic garden. Interesting intact courtyard designed to collect water. We rushed through some of the exhibits as unfortunately we did not have sufficient time. But really enjoyed what we saw except that the signs are only in spanish

Set in an old convent with a seemingly endless number of courtyards and cloisters this museum covers the convent itself, pre-hispanic cultures of Oaxaca (great ground-work before Monte Alban or Mitla), Spanish Conquistador life in Oaxaca and for good measure there are assorted art exhibits thrown in as well. This is also a good place to see the ethno-botanical gardens if you aren't planning on touring them (or are on the fence about it).

This museum will take several hours to browse the many rooms of exhibits. Most relate to the ancient civilization that preceded current day Oaxaca although there are exhibits from the 18th and 19th centuries. We found the exhibits of the formative culture most interesting, in particular the mastery of jewelry surprised us. Only complaint is that there are no exhibit explanations in English - a shame since there appear to be quite a few Americans there.
