We booked late for Christmas in Oaxaca and found it hard to find a place to stay. This place popped up and though it was a ways up the highway in a suburb, we grabbed it, and actually we were happy how it turned out. Getting to the center of town was easy-- an $8 cab or catch any bus passing by, basically, and you'd get to at least the outer edge of the the central part. (The buses are about 50 cents; it's about 20 minutes to downtown, but that's more the traffic than the distance.) The area was fairly quiet (except the one night there was a wedding reception in the outdoor ballroom) and the condo, if a bit spartan, was pleasant enough; the staff had varying levels of English but they were always as helpful as they could be.
The area it was in was nothing special, but it was interesting just to have it to wander around, pick up tacos al pastor or roasted chicken at one of the restaurants nearby. On the weekend this area is where you come to try to sell your used car, and so there were lots of taco stands that popped up. We enjoyed seeing this non-touristed area and, seeing the crowds around the Zocalo late nights, probably were better off staying here than if we'd been closer to that area.More
