Owner description: This lavish cathedral sits on the town's zócalo.

Cathedral is situated in the heart of Oaxaca and is historically significant. Unfortunately, the cathedral is often closed to public and when open is quite dark. Needs light an permission to conduct photographs.

Sunday is a great day to tour churches in Oaxaca as many of the stores are closed and like the locals, many walk through and sit in their favorite churches. The cathedral is to the side of the Zocalo and perhaps a nicer place to sit and take in the ambience.

Enter through the front as one of the highlights are a suite of interior etched glass doors showing images of various saints. They practically glow in the sunlight. Also, it’s often interesting to be here at noon when many of the bells ring.

A lovely setting and a nicer place to sit than the nearby zocalo.

Colonial builders on Oaxaca learned very early that earthquakes were their main protagonist. They met the challenge by extreme over-building using massive, short walls and few windows. The Cathedral exemplifies the resulting style: a huge mass of stone with few outside elaborations. The builders of St Domingo up the road compensated by richly elaborating every inside surface but evidently the Dominicans had all the cash: the Cathedral lacks that fancy interior.

Still, it definitely is worth a visit to this active central church.

Centrally located and pretty spectacular, worth noting or even going in to see. Didn't seem as busy as the much busier Santi Domingo, so might be a little more tranquil to experience

After the first, touristy, visit to this beautiful cathedral, I got into a habit of coming here every day at sunset and just sitting in the little square facing the building. So beautiful and peaceful and always something happening, big or small. A wedding, a celebration or just a guy quietly playing boleros on his guitar
