“Excellent Location and Exceptional Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2009

Hotel Rioja is a fantastic bargain in a top notch location only 2 blocks from the Zocalo in Central Mexico City. It is a budget hotel and the rooms reflect this to some extent as they are a bit old with basic bathroom immenities. You will not have plush beds and robes in the closet. But for less than $20 US a night, it is excellent quality. Our room was very clean when we arrived and well cleaned every evening. When required, subway stations are less than 2 blocks away, making it very easy to get anywhere in the city.

We stayed during the Independence celebration and were able to easily get back and forth to enjoy the festivities without worrying about subways or taxis. Also, the Independence Day parade comes right by the hotel and our window looking onto the street was a wonderful viewpoint to take it all in.

A great experience at a great location!

Nice hotel for what you pay. We were 3 nights at that hotel, having two double beds for three people. The room and the bathroom were clean. We liked the location of the hotel since it's very closed to the zocalo and to metro stations. There are many restaurants (in front of Cafe El Popular, good and cheap, open 24 h) and Seven-evelen stores near the hotel. People at the office were nice and helpful. The Internet access was 10 pesos / 20 minutes.

This is a very well located small hotel. Rooms are very clean if basic and for 230 pesos per night for a single room (a bit over US$18 with the current exchange rate), you get your own ensuite bathroom, TV and telephone. Filtered water is provided. There is free wifi internet access in the lobby (plus a computer available for guests) but reception in the rooms is very spotty.

For business travelers, apart from the internet connection, one major flaw would be the lack of spaces to work or hold meetings ; however for tourists, this is a perfect base to explore Mexico City, as it is located very close to the zocalo and subway stations. There are many well known cafés and restaurants nearby ; Café el Popular is right across the street for cheap, hearty breakfasts.

I found the hotel staff to be perfectly pleasant, polite and accommodating.

Overall, Hotel Rioja is a great bargain and I don't hesitate to recommend it to people who don't mind budget but very decent accommodations.

nice rooms, clean bathroom, balcony with view, wi-fi, tv.....ive paid 230 pesos for room without balcony, i dont think its possible to find anything cheaper :)

A good value hotel with a great location, close to the Zocalo. Rooms are clean and comfortable, with modern tiled bathrooms, and fixtures and fittings of a quality you wouldn´t expect at a price like this. We stayed for five nights in October, and paid 280 pesos for a double room overlooking the street. There was traffic noise - the windows aren´t double glazed - but it didn´t keep us awake. Service at the front desk could be a little gruff, but was very efficient. Would definitely stay there again.
