This place has a lot of history, located just in the heart of the center of Mexico City, has some good pieces of art and a beautiful staircase but in my opinion should be free, not really worth wha we paid.

Every floor in this museum seems to be amazing! There's a lot of history packed and displayed well in this building.

We visited the National Art Museum on a Sunday at noon. Nearly all museums offer free admission on Sundays. We anticipated crowds, but this Museum was not crowded.

Upon arrival, be prepared to check larger bags and backpacks at the complimentary bag check station. Also, if you wish to take photos with a real camera, you must pay a fee of $5 pesos and wear a finger wrap to indicate permission to take photos.

Overall, the gallery had a nice selection of Mexican art from paintings to sculptures. We found the paintings depicting Mexico City in the past most interesting.

Surprise: We observed a man go through a set of unmarked doors. So being infinitely curious, we followed him. We were immediately greeted by a staff member in what appeared to be an “employees only” portion of the museum. My Spanish is dreadful, but I comprehended the word “concert.” So I asked in Spanish “how much?” The staff member rattled on with many words that I did not understand and then said “Mozart.” So I asked again, how much? He was patient and gestured to follow him. He lead us to a beautiful chamber with about 100 chairs set up around a piano. Two older musicians (brothers Moreno) were preparing to play and one was addressing the crowd. Immediately after we were seated, the concert began with a live piano and violin concert performing several pieces by Mozart. We enjoyed this treat for about 40 minutes and then continued our visit in the museum. What a wonderful and unexpected surprise!

This experience was just okay for me. The building is beautiful and it houses some impressive pieces. However, I didn't see any works from many of Mexico's more famous artists. It's definitely worth the money, but if you only have time for one art museum in the area, go to Palacio de Bella's Artes.

Top floor very heavy with dark religious works of art but lower floor contains some great art focusing on scenes of everyday Mexico and the geography of the country. Really interesting and informative and well worth visiting. The museum is very central and architecturally outstanding
