Hotel Catedral is in the block behind Mexico City's Cathedral which faces the huge Zocalo or central square, close (walking distance) to nearly all the main sights and activities in the historical downtown. An older building it is nevertheless clean, bright and well furnished. Our room, above the main entrance on the Avenida Donceles, was quiet with views over the roofs to the mountains. The main dining room provided excellent breakfasts and dinners at more than reasonable prices. The most striking feature of our stay here was the friendliness and amazing helpfulness of the reception staff, in particular Senorita Fernanda, who assisted us in our forays to various tourist destinations, dealt with taxis, airlines and recovered mislaid items for us which we thought were lost in far parts of town. Any time we go back to Mexico City we will stay at the Hotel Catedral.

This is the second time I stayed at Hotel Catedral. Again, I cannot say enough about the location and the service. Friendly, helpful staff and a very short walk to the zocalo, the heart of the city and indeed, the heart of the country. Close to good restaurants as well. Try Cafe Popular which caters to locals, for an excellent, inexpensive meal. Or for pan dulce and hot chocolate, if you want an late night snack. Great place, great hood.

Room was quiet even though in the centre of MC but suprisingly NO view. Room smelt of cigarettes even though requested non-smoking. Beds were ok. Shower was a shocker, I would state the worst from a months stay in Mexico, hot and cold and a halo spray style that defied washing anything other than your shoulders.
tired 70's decor .. but great location!! and cheap!! If you want a place that is cheap to sleep and are not fussy about decor it will get you there.
Breakfast was unimpressive. But plenty of other places to eat nearby.

This is a great hotel with an excellent location and a very helpful staff. I have stayed here two times in the last two years and service has been excellent. Nevertheless: warning! A new disco opened by the end of 2006 blasting music into the rooms that look to the back of the hotel. Hopefully they will remedy this situation soon! Try to get a room with balcony if you want to avoid having a discoteque right into your room all night long! Otherwise, it is a great bargain.

All the good things I heard about the Catedral turned out to be true. I stayed there for three nights in January. It was a great value at approximately $41 per night (with discount for cash, and there were no unexpected taxes or other extras). My only reservations are that the beds were too firm for my liking, and that there was noise from a nearby nightclub that can be annoying if you are in one of the rooms on the back side of the hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is good (and also a good value), the location is great, and there are great views from the terrace.
