I really really really am grateful for the flexibility of the staff in adjusting their schedule for my arrival time. My flight was delayed and I got in later than the expected time. The staff was great. The decor wonderful. The accessible hot and cold water and tea was a nice touch. The shower was wonderful!! It's just a quick walk down town. Any bus that says "mercado" will take you the mile to the market for 5 pesos. They can arrange a taxi to the airport for under 500 pesos and the service is excellent.
I think this hostel has a lot of potential.
I wish I could give this hostel five, but I it wouldn't be honest. I can tolerate many things, but others may not. I was OK with the things I mention below, but they might play into your choice.
1. I saw two cockroaches in the kitchen.
2. Sewer smell from hallway bathroom upstairs.
3. I woke up to a man sleeping in the women's dorm with a woman. I asked them to move, they did but then came back. Because there is no desk staff after 10 pm this provides a security issue. I did mention this to Gabriel and he apologized.
4. There are no keys provided for the dorm rooms, leaving a security issue.
5. Only three lockers for eight beds. I understand the staff is "trustworthy", but other guests may not be.
6. You are required to pay half of your stay before when you book online. I understand this is a way for the owner to make sure he is being paid. For someone coming from the US this is difficult.
I really did like it there, but those items are of concern.
