Celebrating the 50th anniversary of my parents with our family of 12, Villa Mandarinas provided the perfect setting for the week. Being the most expensive vacation we will most likely ever enjoy, I don't know that I can say that was a good value but we were treated like royalty. The staff -- "Mickey", Ariel, Alberto, Leyte, Chef and the housekeeping staff -- made the trip truly memorable, getting us whatever we "needed" whenever we needed it with a smile. Setting was beautiful, rooms were perfect and we canceled our dinner reservations in the city to enjoy the meals that Chef prepared for us. We are from Chicago and enjoy fine dining and our VM meals stood up to anything we have here.

Some notes: You are about a 20-25 minute taxi ride to the downtown area which costs about $25. There are no sidewalks making walking anywhere difficult as you have to navigate the very narrow (if any) shoulder of the main road. Mislamoya beach is the closest destination and is about a 20 minute walk down this road. Boca de Tomatlan (and its beach) is about a ten minute taxi ride south and is not really walkable. Therefore, unless you want to take frequent taxi trips, you may find yourself spending much of your time on the property (which isn't a bad thing).

The salt water pool seems to have succumbed to one of the recent storms and is now just a jumble of rocks. The pier was also recently destroyed but was rebuilt during the week we visited. Using it to enter the water to swim or kayak is an ordeal due to the tides, waves and abundant urchins. I wouldn't recommend it for small kids or seniors.

If this property fits your price range, I would recommend it wholeheartedly. The staff alone is worth the visit.

“Majestic in every way”

The moment the front doors opened and the House Manager gave us the tour, I knew this was going to be an experience to remember.

The main living area was spacious, beautifully decorated and accommodating to a large party. The dining table was large and the meals were exquisite. The infinity pool area was also sizable, well maintained and inviting. As long as anyone of our party was at the villa, this area was occupied. With a view over the infinity pool as beautiful as this one, it was hard not to stay. The game room below it provided another group hangout location with a pool and foosball table. Below that was a small fire pit that gave the children a night to do smores. At the base of the villa was the dock and saltwater pool. Both of these provided a unique experience. The area around the dock made for easy snorkeling and kayaking and a rock-built ocean-filled saltwater pool gave a chance to get away from the standard chlorinated kind.

Each bedroom was separated from the next and color coordinated. There were two above the main living space, one adjacent to game room and the remaining next to main house, moving up the landscape in five levels. Not only did this give you privacy, but every room was a unique design. I would come back again just to stay in a different room with a different view.

As for the staff, well, I couldn't have asked for more. Gabriella (house concierge) made sure that everything was up to the group's liking and helped organize transfers and activities. Miguel (house manager) personalized every request, from getting coffee from the kitchen to getting out the kayaks for the ocean. Ariel bartended and delivered food poolside, and never left you wanting. Housekeeping was timely, efficient and almost invisible. I swear I would go to the kitchen for breakfast, have a drink by the pool and go back to a made bed and clean room. Maybe I was distracted by the view, but they were impressive. As for the chefs, imagine a fancy restaurant preparing meals just for you. They were creative and delicious with an authentic Mexican feel.

All in all, this villa made for an experience to remember with a view that is indescribable in it's beauty. It made an already wonderful Christmas one for the books.

** One recommendation: If you book this villa though a third party, ask to work with the local concierge over the one they assign you. Gabriella did more in the week we were there than the company's concierge could in the months prior.
