“Affordable suite with great views”
Reviewed 25 April 2012

The 1 bedroom suite included a separate bedroom, sofa-bed living room, fully equipped kitchen (with microwave, stove, toaster, mixer, full size refrigerator, utensils, etc.). The view of the bay and PV is superb. You can hear the surf as you sleep. The private deck is huge...almost another room with dining room table, lounge chairs, etc. The bed is very comfortable. Two bathrooms, one near the door helpful for changing from the beach. The beach is fairly small and a bit rough, but you can still do some swimming. Not really a good walk into town but taxis are reasonable. The housekeeping is excellent and the staff is friendly and attentive. There are a few problems. One is extremely loud music from the hotel next door, with a DJ who shouts into the mike...this made enjoying the deck difficult at times: we had to close our sliding doors and turn on the air to avoid the noise. We were on an all-inclusive: the menu choices are fairly limited and the food is only so-so. The meat products are especially poor (hamburger, bacon, steak, etc.). We had a few mosquitoes at night, so a screen door would have been helpful.

Room Tip: 7th floor was high enough for panoramic view and to hear the surf.

Our family of four (2 adults, 2 preschoolers) went for spring break b/w March 12-19, 2012. We had high hopes for this resort, and overall we were pleased. But there were a few notable downsides, and we will not be returning to Sunset Plaza in PV. By the way, you can choose the all-inclusive option or the European option; we chose all-inclusive because of the children, but with the kitchen in the room, maybe we would have been more adventurous and gone grocery shopping to have some meals in our room. But we wanted a break from meal preparation, so we didn't do that this time around.

The Good (in no particular order):
1. Spacious rooms that were cleaned daily (we opted for the one bedroom suite with king bed and fold out sofa bed--good for two young children, not for older kids as the fold-out is smaller than a double bed).
2. Nice pools; the kids' pool was terrific, and the larger infinity pool is really neat. We spent A LOT of time at the pool with our 2 and 4 year olds.
3. Great ocean view from the large balcony. We could hear the ocean all the time, and it was amazing at sunset.
4. Generally nice, accommodating staff. They work really hard!
5. Good food, but do not look for or expect buffet eating. If that's important to you, go to a different all-inclusive resort. Not much variety in the menu, but it was good.
6. Close to the airport, so no long cab rides, but that isn't a deal-breaker or major selling point for us.
7. An easily accessible, albeit small beach, but it was adequate for us. The water is rough there, but that could be seasonal (I don't know if or when the water would be calmer). The kids could splash as long as we were right next to them, but that would be the case even if the water was calm.
8. Quiet--no loud, raucous shows at night and not a lot of spring break party-ers (while we were there). Although the resort next door is another story and all rooms face out over that resort, so it could get a little loud.

The Not-So-Good (in no particular order):
1. No children's menu at any meal, so we were hard-pressed to find food for our picky eaters. Pizza is available on their room service menu (which we looked at in the room, so I knew it was available, but you won't find it on the restaurant menu). Sometimes they were flexible, most times they were not. And at times we were lied to about them being out of things like peanut butter. And they skimped on the fresh fruit in the restaurant but served it abundantly the morning we ordered room service. Frustrating. And them not having a menu for children or acceptable alternatives is the main reason I say it's not a good resort for small children, unless yours aren't picky eaters.
2. Why is alcohol served in abundance but water is treated like a precious commodity and served somewhat reluctantly? With two young children, we could not sit around drinking alcohol all day. I like water and don't want to risk being charged extra so I can stay healthy and hydrated. Please! It turns out we were not charged extra, but there were times I wondered whether we would be.
3. Small beach that is often taken up by parasailing company, beach volleyball and vendors.
4. Restrooms could be much closer to the pool, again for small children.

Now for the serious health concern mentioned in my review title. My husband has a medically confirmed case of Hepatitis A that he acquired while we were in PV. There are only two real possibilities for how he caught this disease: 1) an infected employee did not wash his or her hands before handling his food (it is found in the fecal matter of infected people and transmitted when they do not properly wash their hands before handling food--disgusting) OR 2) he somehow ingested some ocean water infected with Hep A at the Sunset Plaza beach as Hep A can live in seawater for up to 6 months, which means there is contaminated raw sewage in the water at the beach at Sunset Plaza. Fortunately our children have been immunized for this disease, and I just received my vaccination and am praying I haven't been infected. Either way, this disease most likely is present at Sunset Plaza and travelers here should beware. If you plan to travel to Mexico even to the nicer all-inclusive resorts PLEASE make sure you are immunized for Hepatitis A (and B for that matter just in case!). I hate to point fingers at the resort, but we did not eat anywhere else the entire week, so it really leaves little other option. Please beware! And we will not ever return to this hotel as a result.

Room Tip: We were on the 7th floor which was high enough up to get a great view and not be affected by pool no...

I spent a week at the Sunset Plaza over the Spring Break March 23-31, 2012. The hotel is beautiful. We really enjoyed the service which was over the top. Upon arrival the butler Juan was very helpful and informative to make our stay the best. During our stay Ivan and Carlos were also very helpful at the butler desk and Carlos even loaned me his own charger for my KOBO reader as I forgot mine back home. We read earlier about the coffee not being in the rooms so brought coffee for the machines from home. The meals were all ala carte and this was great for my girlfiriend with her gluten allergy as they were able to make anything she wanted and made sure there was not gluten in anything she had. We even brought a letter in spanish which outlined the kinds of foods to avoid. The chefs were very good at dealing with this and she had no issues at all. The pool area was great, good service, anything you wanted they would bring to you. Beach area not the best as it is small, the water cold compared to the Mayan where we usually go. But this was a relaxing vacation and didn't spend much time in the ocean more by the pool bar. Drinks were great, very good service at the bar. Mostly adults at this time, few kids that were not distracting at all. The rooms were beautiful, beds nice and soft and had a great sleep each night. No issues with noise. We were on the 6th floor. We stayed in a regular room not the suites although for the little extra I wish we would have. The room we had however was adequate in size and very nice and clean and no problems with anything there. We also booked some room service and the staff were great informing us of the extra 10% gratuity for the delivery of food or drinks to the room. Be sure to ask for food with any drinks you get to your room or you will be charged for the drinks at the regular rate. 10% was very reasonable. Staff was great, Isaiah was a very friendly staff in the restaurant and made sure we always got whatever we needed and he was both funny and kind. Daniel was also great and his engish was very good and helpful for planning meals each time. Food was prepared in the restaurant outdoors under the hottubs and although the occassional fly was around it usually was very nice to eat outdoors. Not muich for evening entertainment except some dinners with theme nights and a mariachi band, which was romantic on the grass. The beef was not so great but this is Mexico and not the beef we are used to in Alberta. If you like top notch service, a quiet and relaxing time with your wife or friends, great food, and personalized service you will not be dissapointed if you stay here. If we are back in Puerto Vallarta we will definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean so you can't go wrong. Higher up you get a better view. Elevators are q...

My husband and I just got back from a 5 day stay at the Sunset Plaza and cannot say enough good things about it! We have stayed in several all-inclusive resorts in the past and have not been impressed, so we were hoping all of the rave reviews on this one were right. Well, I can honestly say that this resort exceeded my expectations. It is small, quaint, quiet, and beautiful--everything you want in a resort! The food was authentic and delicious! Even though there are just two restaurants, we never waited long for food and didn't have to wait to sit. At times we felt like the only ones at the resort because it was so quiet! We do not like like resorts with tons of people, personnel trying to get you to play games by the pool, loud music, crappy food, or high school/college Spring Breakers. This resort is not for you if those are the kind of things you want on vacation. If you are looking for excellent service, good food, yummy drinks, a brilliant view, and complete relaxation, Sunset Plaza is where it is at!!! I am not one to repeat visits to resorts, as I normally like to try new places, but this is a resort that I cannot wait to head back to next year!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are good---all ocean views. We had the 4th floor and were not complaining :)
