“Super-friendly staff; good but not stellar/luxurious accomodations”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2012

My partner (yes, we are a gay couple) and I went to Mazatlan 7/16-7/21. This was our first trip to Mexico ever, for both of us. The most noteworthy thing about the El Cid properties was the VERY friendly staff. Ana, Karinna, Ivan, Francisco, etc. were super nice, helpful, friendly, and totally made us feel welcome at El Cid. The biggest downside for us, and this was by no fault of El Cid, but rather a lack of oversight on our part, was that July is the Mexican high season for hotels/resorts in Mexico. So, my partner and I were pretty much the only, or just one of a few, non-Mexican couples there. This wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that it wasn't really a Mexican couples resort either ... there were tons of kids, everywhere. That would have been fine if that was the type of vacation we were seeking, but we were hoping for something a little more upscale, relaxing, tranquil, and with mostly adult couples, singles, etc. We didn't mind being the only gay people in sight there either, everyone treated us warmly and just the same ... we just felt out of place because we were pretty much the only ones there without kids! :) We used the pool on the El Cid Castillo property mostly because we found there to be fewer kids than the Moro Beach hotel pool. Also, the pool staff at the Castillo pool were awesome ... great DJ, super nice bar staff, the games were fun, and we even did the aqua aerobics which was a lot of fun ... Enrique, Gabriel, Hans, etc. from El Castillo pool were great. With regards to the poor timing of our travel, apparently, October-May is the high season for American and Canadian tourists at El Cid. We would probably return, but next time with a group of our friends instead. While, overall, we had a good time in Mazatlan, and at El Cid, I didn't really feel that it was a suitable luxury romantic vacation. I hear Playa del Carmen on the east coast of Mexico may have more of what we were looking for. For our first-ever trip to Mexico, though, it was generally a positive experience. There was nothing to fear there, it's not a scary, crime-ridden place as the US media may portray. Mazatlan is real Mexico, though ... the people are humble, friendly, and warm. It is not a super built-up luxury resort town ... it's a mostly mixed poor and modest city with modest hotels/accommodations, a beautiful coast, great food, and the nicest people you may ever meet. Going to Mazatlan you will surely get a real feel for the local flavor of Mexico in this mid-sized city.

Room Tip: Higher floors --- amazing views of Mazatlan and the Pacific Ocean!

This was our 3rd trip to Mazatlan, last time we were at El Cid was 8 years ago. What a huge downturn. This used to be a first class resort. The resort is very poorly maintained and the wear and tear shows. When we checked in, we were 3 couples and since the first couple decided to upgrade the rest of us were given such a bad attitude because we didn't want to upgrade. Vania at the reception desk tried hard to charge us extra $30/night to upgrade and when we declined, she not only gave us the worst rooms available, she told us nothing is available and we had to come back multiple times to get the key to our room. We tried the next day to see if any better room became available and Evelyn was more helpful and changed one of our rooms to a nicer one, but when she found another room for the 3rd couple, again Malube told her not to offer it to us and she didn't think we can understand spanish and declined our room change. The first night (Sat night) people were partying and making noise until 2:30 in the morning and we finally called the front desk and security came and they turned the noise down. The same thing happened on Sunday night. On a good note, the reservation restaurant were nice and the waiters were wonderful. Josua at the Italian restaurant was very attentive and patient with our big group. The argentinian restaurant was nice too. The Japanese restaurant didn't impress us and both the food the head waiter weren't very nice. This was probably the last time we will go to El Cid thanks to Vania and Malube.

Just got back from a week at the El Cid. Four adults and five kids aged 4-14. Great pool for kids and ours had a blast. Jorge, Felix, and Cervando at pool side remembered our names and gave us excellent service. We've found if you tip consistently you'll get great attention (everywhere in Mexico, really). No surprise, but food/drinks are cheap compared to the US and throwing a buck or two at people pays off. The rooms were decent - comparable to other resorts we've been to in Mexico. Overall a well run, safe hotel. Lots of great restaurants around so we never ate in the hotel and can't comment on that.

Here's our group's hot tip: an activity that doesn't show up on Tripadvisor and was the highlight of our trip was taking a couple pulmonaria tours. These aren't formally run through a business - you just find a driver who speaks good english, work out the cost ahead of time (about $30/hour), and enjoy. An hour is plenty of time for the ride if all you're doing is cruising and two pulmonaria easily fit our group of nine. We would generally eat dinner then find a couple of pulminaria (Aaron was our go-to guy) and go. We would stop and buy bags of iced beer for the adults and ice cream for the kids to enjoy on the ride. Its a beautiful ride down the boardwalk to old Mazatlan where you can see lots of activity and people as well as cliff divers. This is fun during the day or at night when the nightlife cranks up. Again, make sure your driver speaks good english, ask questions, and you'll get a great tour and learn about the local culture along the way.

Dear seamexFam, Thank You so much for taking the time to write this review, also for share your experience! It is wonderful to know that you had a great time during your stay with us. Our goal is to provide you an excellent service and give you an unforgettable vacation. In our staff we have people like Jorge, Felix & Cervando, who make an amazing job, we really apreciate them.

We hope that when you visit us the next time you have the opportunity to enjoy the restaurants at the hotel, however is great that you were able to taste food at different places around. Also is good to know that you take a ride on the "Pulmonias" they are an unique kind of transportation and you can only find them in Mazatlan! And is the best way to meet places, see the sunset, and share with your whole family..!

Thank so much for your visit and we hope to see you soon, it would be our pleasure!

Kind regards,

I'm late with this review and I'm sorry to all. Our home away from home is awesome. The units and the grounds are always neat and tidy. They had revamped the main pool which looks great and was working on other parts of the resort. The cocktail Welcome Parties are wonderful and lets you meet, greet and interact with other owners or just visitors to our wonderful resort. They have any kind of food that you would want and all delicious. Everyone has smiles and are very friendly, but after 5 weeks there they become part of your family. I'd like to mention a few and have them recognized as doing a great service to the El Cid family (no certain order): Jesus, Rene, Guillermo, Karla, Carlos, Lourdes, Claudia, Capt. Joel, Jorge A, Luis A, Saul A, Elsie, Angel, Ramon R, Ramon M, Marycruz A, Ana B, Laura V, Carmen O, Yuliana D, Jose L, Victor R, Dana, Jane, Enrique G, Rui, Karl E., Humberto and Odon with his smiling face greeting everyone in the lobby. I'm sure I have left someone out and if I have, please forgive me. We are blessed to have so many friends and look forward to seeing them every year.

Room Tip: Units have different views. If you don't like your view, ask and if at all available, they will...
