My partner (yes, we are a gay couple) and I went to Mazatlan 7/16-7/21. This was our first trip to Mexico ever, for both of us. The most noteworthy thing about the El Cid properties was the VERY friendly staff. Ana, Karinna, Ivan, Francisco, etc. were super nice, helpful, friendly, and totally made us feel welcome at El Cid. The biggest downside for us, and this was by no fault of El Cid, but rather a lack of oversight on our part, was that July is the Mexican high season for hotels/resorts in Mexico. So, my partner and I were pretty much the only, or just one of a few, non-Mexican couples there. This wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that it wasn't really a Mexican couples resort either ... there were tons of kids, everywhere. That would have been fine if that was the type of vacation we were seeking, but we were hoping for something a little more upscale, relaxing, tranquil, and with mostly adult couples, singles, etc. We didn't mind being the only gay people in sight there either, everyone treated us warmly and just the same ... we just felt out of place because we were pretty much the only ones there without kids! :) We used the pool on the El Cid Castillo property mostly because we found there to be fewer kids than the Moro Beach hotel pool. Also, the pool staff at the Castillo pool were awesome ... great DJ, super nice bar staff, the games were fun, and we even did the aqua aerobics which was a lot of fun ... Enrique, Gabriel, Hans, etc. from El Castillo pool were great. With regards to the poor timing of our travel, apparently, October-May is the high season for American and Canadian tourists at El Cid. We would probably return, but next time with a group of our friends instead. While, overall, we had a good time in Mazatlan, and at El Cid, I didn't really feel that it was a suitable luxury romantic vacation. I hear Playa del Carmen on the east coast of Mexico may have more of what we were looking for. For our first-ever trip to Mexico, though, it was generally a positive experience. There was nothing to fear there, it's not a scary, crime-ridden place as the US media may portray. Mazatlan is real Mexico, though ... the people are humble, friendly, and warm. It is not a super built-up luxury resort town ... it's a mostly mixed poor and modest city with modest hotels/accommodations, a beautiful coast, great food, and the nicest people you may ever meet. Going to Mazatlan you will surely get a real feel for the local flavor of Mexico in this mid-sized city.
