“Nice Spring Break Getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2012

Our Family of 3 stayed here the last week of March 2012 for our Spring Break. This was our first visit to Mazatlan. The Riu is a really nice place and is far away from the golden zone which is a reason why we booked this resort. The food was overall good...not great.. They were lacking in their seafood category as we only had 1 night in which shrimp was offered. We did not eat at any of the specialty places so it was just buffet.
The water in the pool was too cold for me to get in, but my son and wife enjoyed it. The ocean was the same way at that time fo year.
I would not hesitate to go back to this resort due to the price mainly....we spent about $100US per night for our week stay for 3. That is really inexpensive and allows more money to do other things.
We were apprehensive about going to Mexico with the warnings and all, but once we arrived, there was really no worry on our minds.
The nightly shows were pretty good and my son had a great time at the kids club.
Overall, good experience for us and good value for what we paid.

My husband and I traveled with our two children, ages 16 and 9, during the first week of June. This was our first visit to both Mazatlan and a RIU property. I was a little apprehensive after reading other reviews, but based on the price and the fact that it was the only all-inclusive property available, I decided to book it. Many of the other posts are right on, but maybe because we were aware of what others considered cons before arriving we were able to overlook them a little easier. It is a large hotel with many rooms, but relatively easy to get around. The pool, beach, restaurants, and kid's club are all very close together on the backside of the hotel. The spa and fitness center are in front of the hotel and a bit away from the other amenities. We checked in on a Monday and the check-in process was simple and quick although they said it would a few minutes before our room was ready. A bellman was willing to take our bags and suggested that we go down to lunch until our room was available. We chose not to do that based on a review where the guest did exactly that and found they had been robbed by the time they got to the room. We also heeded the advice of the receptionist and always used the safe in the room for any valuables including the towel cards when we weren't using them. We never had any problems, but we tried not to be careless. Every employee we had contact with was friendly and always willing to help; specifically, Pedro, a server in Las Tres Islas. The crew that put on the shows and entertainment did an exemplary job. We were often the only English speaking guests around, but there was rarely a language barrier. Most people spoke English very well and my teen was influenced enough to want to study Spanish a little more astutely. We chose to take the taxi from the airport (380 pesos each way.) Just be aware of the time share salespeople and keep going until you reach the taxi kiosk outside. Even there someone tried to persuade us to "visit" a different hotel. It's a little overwhelming, but just say no and keep smiling. We explored the mercado district a couple of times. Once we took the Pulmonia to/from the hotel (150 pesos each way), another time the city bus (75 cents each way). Enjoy the culture, eat and shop at the market. Walk a lot and be willing to explore. Try to make purchased in pesos, the exchange rate is much better that way. The ocean is rough and most days the lifeguard did not let anyone get too far out, but the beach is nice and wide. One little boy did got stung by a jellyfish and it sounded extremely painful. We saw them washed up on the beach once in awhile (they were tiny). We were in the water a lot, but thankfully didn't have any run ins with the little critters. We never had a problem getting beach or pool chairs, but I think we were their during a little bit slower season. Many tour buses did come in on Thurs. and numerous people from Guadalajara and other outlying areas checked in until Sunday. The elevators are slow and it was more noticeable over the weekend. Next time I would request a room on a lower floor so we could just take the stairs. We never had a problem getting into the buffets or the specialty restaurants. We ate at them all and enjoyed every one (especially Tabasco and our server Edgar.) The pool was crowded with many kids, but since I was there with my own children it didn't bother us at all. It was never so crowded that we couldn't find any space to play. We booked a couple of tours through the travel agent at the RIU. The colonial tour to Copala was definitely worthwhile for all ages, while the Stone Island tour was O.K. My family agreed they would not hesitate to visit both Mazatlan and the RIU Emerald Bay again. This is not a great place to snorkel (which I love to do), but it turned out to a pleasant surprise.

Room Tip: Request a room on a lower floor to avoid the slow, busy elevators. Pack shampoo and conditioner, onl...

We loved loved loved the Riu Emerald Bay in Mazatlan Mexico!
We went in the middle of November 2011, we took our 2 children, parents and 3 other couples.
The entertainment staff was over the top, the buffett was wonderful, there was so much stuff to choose from even a picky eater would enjoy it.
Awesome nightly hour or longer performances, The beach was perfect!
We went down the street to Mr. Lionso's and had the most fabulous meal ever! $21 canadian for a full just caught that day lobster and 6 xlarge batteres and creamcheese stuffed shrimp. We rented scooters from the guy at the end of the driveway, we were able to get them for $10 an hour each, we travelled into the city and went to the local aquarium, we went shopping and had the best meals right in Mazatlan off the resort. Across the street is a waterpark, we were basically the only people there, the kids loved it, about $12 each to get in, we walked over, it took us 5 minutes, and stayed for 4 hours.
This hotel has had some tainted issues in the past and it is unfortunate, the staff were wonderful, we met some of the locals on the beach, very hard working humans just trying to make a good life for themselves and their family.
The only downfall would be that there were bees that hung out around the pop machines and ice cream machines. Yes because there are pop and icecream machines hanging around! Yum!
My husband and I will go here again, it was a beauty of a time!!

Room Tip: Stay on or above the 4th floor so you get a good view of the ocean. But dont stay up to high that y...

We stayed at this hotel last June 2011, and we loved it. Food, service, grounds, pools...excellent. The beach was nice, but couldn't swim due to high waves, red flag was almost every day. We stayed on 5th floor, and the view was amazing, room was spacious, clean, mini bar, mini fridge was filled everyday, pop, beer, water...Entertainment team kept us busy during the day, they had tons of games around the pool, so you won't be bored..All in all, the vacation was awesome!

We stayed there for Christmas. The people were great, the food was about what you'd expect from a Mexico all inclusive. the beach was nice, the pool was good. Great booze, food all night, and one of the best in-room mini-bars.

Room Tip: They're all the same, all have a view. Ask for one on a high-floor.
