Rooms: we had honeymoon room. In laws had standard room. Only difference honeymoon room is larger with double balcony. We were happy with it beds firm. But comfy. We all agreed on that. Please tip the employees they work hard for what they get. Riu management. Treat them good their the ones giving you a good name. Great holiday Only thing that was a concern was that it s pretty far to take a cab. Food good Presentation good. Cleanliness. Very good. Have fun

I recently stayed at the Riu with a friend April 14th to the 21st. The hotel is amazing...beautiful and airy. The entire hotel from the rooms, the lobby and grounds are kept immaculately clean. The restaurants are well maintained and food is in abundance...lots of choices so everyone can find something to enjoy.
The staff are superb...friendly and outgoing they like to chat with you to find out where you're from and they are so happy that Mazatlan was chosen as the vacation destination.
Special thank yous go to Luis in the sports bar who is always laughing and comes up with many tasty concoctions...also to Ismael, Arturo and Fabian at the pool bar in the adults only section who were so friendly and funny. Ismael went out of his way to make me fresh pineapple daquiries and would always make sure I had a fresh drink in hand.
We did not venture much off the resort but did do the 4 hour city tour which was pretty interesting. Manuel our guide was funny and took our group on a walking tour through the old part of the city.
On a side note, in April, the nights are cold so make sure you pack a light jacket or sweater if you plan on sitting outside after sundown. Also don't be surprised some mornings if the heavy fog takes a while to clear...one day the fog did not clear until 10:30am! That being said, everyday was bright sunshine and blue skies.
I would definitely recommend this resort and will look into staying at other Riu properties!

Room Tip: All rooms are ocean view so you don't need to upgrade. I would recommend a higher floor in orde...

The Riu Emerald Bay does a great job, no doubt. All-inclusives in Mexico offer incredible value, entertainment and an overall experience; I highly recommend. If you are into all-inclusives... which after my week at Riu Emerald Bay, we finally have just realized that we are not. My review will offer a pro/con look at several aspects to help you decide and/or set expectations.

Location: Mazatlan is perfectly Mexico.

Pro -- It has maintained its charm and culture despite massive growth over the past 20 years.
Con -- if you like the planned, engineered and "American" feel of Cancun and/or the Cabo Marina area you may find Mazatlan a little "too authentic."

Emerald Bay (formerly and locally known as Playa Bruja... I guess renamed to be more tourist friendly than "Witch's Beach") is clean, quiet and beautiful.

Pro -- If you like long beach walks, minimal vendor harassment, sea shell and sea glass hunting... this is your place.
Con -- The waves are rough, not for swimming and only experienced surfers.

The RIU Property is enormous and entirely ocean view. A destination in and of itself.

Pro -- One of the top 5 hotel suites I have ever stayed in. Marble everywhere, quality wood furniture, spacious, private balcony, fuzzy bathrobes, even a bidet for Pete's sake. A+ on the Jacuzzi Suite, it is worth the upgrade.

Con -- The elevator service was a little too cozy for me. Until we realized there was a second bank to the right of the front desk! Don't get on if too crowded, we terrifyingly dropped two floors (one at a time) on one ride when two Biggest Loser contenders pushed their way on. The enormous hotel also could be considered an eyesore to the more typical Mexican architecture and colonial style, but that's probably just me.

Dining options were plentiful, lots of items and selection at the buffets.

Pro -- Lots of items and selection. The fresh fruit at breakfast was especially delicious and the beach BBQ at lunch was tasty, too.

Con -- Despite the quantity... the quality was a big MEH. Nothing was bad but nothing was particularly GOOD either. You have to make dinner reservations for anything other than the Italian Buffet and they act like it is a great inconvenience if you show up late.

Drinking options are also plentiful!

Pro -- if you want to drink your face off, this is the way to go. The bartender at the Sport Bar hates empty glasses. I'm not sure what repressed childhood issues he's dealing with there... but it makes the man happy to keep your drink full, so consider it a kind favor to him to drink, accept refill, drink again... seriously, I'd like to give him a shout out by name but it is all a vodka-soda-pineapple blur.

Con -- the wine is terrible. The liquor is cheap. The tequila is Cuervo. I know, I'm trying to find a con here and really getting nowhere... it is a great place to be a lush for a few days. They have fresh juice and water, too, I hear.

Service is fantastic. Everyone incredibly nice and helpful. I like how the doormen take your room number and log the time and taxi number when you leave the property... felt safer, somehow.

On that subject, the best days we had were when we left the property, which is how we came to the conclusion that we are not all-inclusive vacationers. I highly recommend that you budget for a day outside the compound... take an open air taxi blasting 80's hip-hop to the Golden Zone. Have a grandota margarita at Ponchos on the Beach and try the best guacamole in the world while watching the vendors and locals in a ballet of sorts, weaving, sunning and splashing the day away. Go to El Capitan restaurant and get the bacon wrapped shrimp with an ice-cold cerveza then walk in the sand for a mile to burn off those calories. Go ahead, buy a straw hat... you know you want one.

Final "must-do" while at the Riu, that is not at the Riu... skip the madhouse breakfast buffet. Head out the hotel and take a left, walk about 1/2 a mile to a little strip mall at the end of the bay. Order a cup of coffee at The Looney Bean while watching the owner roast and grind their special blend for the day. Jump on their free wifi, come back to this post and click on "this review was helpful" for me. And above all, relax... you're on vacation.

Room Tip: upgrade to jacuzzi suite

We went 04/07/2012-04/17/2012 We had a great time on vacation,At first we were given room 211 on second floor this was not acceptable, you could not see anything only a cement wall. Finally was moved next day at 4 o'clock'not impressed with front desk? After that everything was very good, the place was beautiful and very clean.Maid service and staff very friendly and went out of their way to ensure you had a great holiday they work very hard&appreciate tips,The food was excellent and I am very picky, they have 3 alacartes also a beach barbecue, and a seafood night plus a wde variety of fresh and very good food so if you go hungry its, you own fault. The negative the orange juice was watered down and coffee was horrible. But every thing can,t be perfect. There is a very good cafe 10 min. up the beach with great coffee and yummy pastries called The Looney Bean very friendl staff, also a very good seafood restaurant called Mr. Liono,s excellent. We will hopefully return but stay 2 weeks next time and do more day trips, The weather was perfect. We felt secure at all times and were treated royally,we have been to Mexico at least 12 times and this was one of our favorite places.

Room Tip: Higher floors have the best views,We were on the fith floor and it was a very good ocean view.

This was in all essences a hotel rather than a resort. Although you may pay for an all-inclusive, the feel was more like a standard hotel offering a beach and beverages. Our stay was ok. Some minor concerns to start when we arrived to our none-smoking room and it reeked of cigarettes. The staff was quick to respond and offered to clean the room once more. We had to propose having the room changed (which would have been nice if the staff made the recommendation themselves). AS I mentioned… nothing major. They did however, overlook another major mishap, which we all felt was handled poorly, when a vacationer was attacked in the hotel. The hotel staff was on the defense and denied everything despite the news coverage. Beautiful grounds, but may not ever return.
