We hired a local man to show us around the Santiago area and then take us to old town Manzanillo. He took us on all manner of streets up and down the peninsula to a secluded beach and some little known family-owned hotels and also past the fabulous large hotels/resorts and condos. Along the way he explained some of the history of the region.

We're not fans of gated communities and it seems many occupy this peninsula. Still, it's worth a winding drive to see the hillside enclaves on this peninsula that separates Santiago Bay and Manzanillo Bay..

Santiago is a nice, long bay, great for walks and swimming. The beach is rough on the east end but is swimmable closer to the hill on the west end. Can get very crowded on local holidays and weekends.

Hidden away beach. There are local vendors, Beach chair & umbrella rentals $150 MX. Coconut drinks are over-priced. Warm waters that are easy to swim & soak in. Great day at the beach overall.

Do not recommend. Did not feel safe in the city of Manzanillo, Mexico. Walked around the city and quickly return to cruise boat after seeing young men with guns and the Mexican Federallies just a couple block away from the cruise ship dock.
