“A slice of heaven !!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 February 2012

We booked this trip for a girls get away, we wanted something that was low key and relaxing. We also wanted a touch of luxury, this place did not disapoint. Although the property is going through some challenges, it is still the most amazing place. We enjoyed the pool ( not heated but when you need to get to the pool bar you just have to bite the bullet, felt great after a few of the amazing margueritas. We had breakfast every morning on the lanai, and dinner several nights. We were lucky enough to get our kayaks out to the area that the whale sharks frequent, which is just off the beach in front of the homes, what an incredible experience. There were some tour boats out there with us and we were so glad we did not pay for a tour when we were able to just go right from our beach in the Kayaks provided. The staff was really wonderful, even picking us up after-hours when we enjoyed the nightlife of La Paz. This is not a place to party, but we sure managed to have fun and relax. Be prepared as you have to take a boat to the condos, and then a golf cart ride after that. It is really worth it though for the exclusivity, I really felt like i was on my own private island. We drove up from Cabo which was not bad, I reccomend a stop in Todos Santos as it is the most adorable little artsy town, although the road is tore up, it was worth it. The road on the East side of the Peninsula is much better and a beautiful drive. We rented one of the Penthouses through VRBO, HUGE condo with ensuite bathrooms in every room, the largest shower I have ever seen. The best part was getting into the Jacuzzi on the Lanai after a fabulous day in the sun. This is my Mexico destination going forward, I love La Paz!

Room Tip: I recommend a Penthouse, well worth the money.

As reviewed above, the resort is open but not competely.

We had a fabulous week. We rented directly from an owner via VRBO.com (other websites where rentals were available were redweek and craigslist). The condo was a beautiful 2 bed/3 bath unit that was very well maintained and a good bargain.

Pros:

Very quiet and private: if your idea of paradise is miles of beaches where you are the only one walking the sandy and shell-filled beach, this is the place! There are free sit-on-top kayaks to explore the water and whale sharks right off the beach.

Staff: the homeowners association was able to hire back much of the important staff. The grounds were clean and maintained. There is security and staff to drive you around the property and the launch from the harbor to the property travelled twice hourly. They were all very nice and wonderfully accommodating. Although the restaurant is closed, the chef and support staff are working at the poolside grill and will cook anything you wish (cheaply!). We asked for fish tacos and the following day the staff caught a mahi-mahi in the morning and made incredible tacos for us for dinner. Another couple staying there were vegetarians and the chef made them (and us) fabulous roasted veggie pizzas!

Golf and tennis open and quiet. Golf proshop is closed as is the restaurant and store. These areas seemed well-maintained but we don't golf or play tennis, so not sure if this is true.

No TV, phone, internet access. A pro for us but could be a con for others. We had to purchase a Mexican cellphone ($30 from Telcel included enough minutes) to call for transport pick-up and so we didn't feel completely isolated. Wi-fi was available at the resort office which is located amongst the houses away from the condo complex.

Cons:

Pool is not heated. This is understandable since it is very expensive to heat a pool in the off season, but a bummer for us since our daughter loves to swim and could not since the water was so cold. The hot tub was heated nicely, though.

Very few people there. It was a bit spooky to be in a huge resort where greater than 90 percent of the rooms are unoccupied. We met some very nice people there but our daughter was a bit lonely for other kids and wishing for more activities. We felt sorry for the remaining staff since there was not much for them to do and tipped them heavily.

Water treatment plant not working properly? The property relies on a desalination plant but the water was very salty tasting and was not usable for anything except for washing clothes and showering. Since we had to carry everything from the mainland to the property via boat, we were ferrying gallons of drinking water to the condo daily.

We had a wonderful week and would not hesitate to stay here again. We feel badly for the homeowners and resort staff and hope that a new development/investment group steps in and makes this resort into the jewel that it promises to be.

The developer did have financial difficulties over the summer, BUT the homeowners are now in full control of the project and awaiting the bank to sell and new investors. We stayed for 10 days and loved it, staff great, beach great, pool relaxing and now the bars and cafe AND golf course all open and running. It is truly paradise!

Do yourself a favor and stay away from Paraiso del Mar as it is a financial Ponzi scheme. They will eagerly take your money, but will not follow through on the contract. Good luck getting a hold of any person or your money as phone lines are disconnected and communication dries up once you have "donated" to their real estate scam.

Sorry that you had a bad experience with PDM. The original developers did walk away from the property and left a lot of people in limbo. The homeowners are now running the development and the property and grounds are in incredible shape. A great place to visit and for those owners that had their places completed, it's a great place to be an owner.
