We didn't stay here, just had a very nice lunch while spending the day on Saplunara beach. Very simple, good, fresh food. I had delicious fried squid while the kids enjoyed an omelette ('best omelette ever!') and freshly grilled chicken. Nothing fancy, just nice, with good service. Lovely shady spot, with great view overlooking the bay/beach.

We were not very happy with our stay here. First of all Saplunara is way off requiring a rental car and the drive to the National park was almost an hour. Would definitely recommend staying by the park instead (our own fault for not doing our homework though). The rooms of Franka are very plain, almost hostel like. There is a nice balcony but we didn't really use it because of mosquitos. The food was not good in the restaurant and the town was so small that there weren't much other choice. The staff was very friendly though and I'm sure it's nice for those who just want peace and quiet.

As for accomodation- this was dissapointing for all of us: wifi just in restaurant, very simple rooms with no cosiness, missing also basic kitchen equipment, very small and mouldy bathroom, no cleaning tools to clean the appt ourselves- do not expect to have it cleaned during your stay by staff. Beautiful view from the balcony over the bay is the most possitive point. The host family is not so friendly as well- somehow you would expect more personal approach in that place. If you are looking for a nature paradise at the end of the world, this part of Mljet is the right one. You can chose from beautiful pebbly or sandy beach with crystal water really fantastic swimming. Also the journey to the place is advantageous, along hills and overviewing amazing wild see shore. On the other side, if planning the trips (e.g.to the national park on the north), it takes long drive and time, going to the coast is also quite demanding (so we made it to Mostar- a challenge - but then better skipped the planned one to Dubrovnik). BUT if you have children and want also some fun, shops and evening walks on beach promenade this might be not a right place. Only the tiny shop in Saplunara, bread daily- just on order, fruit and vegetable often missing ! Really to get some food you need to drive longer. A few days before our leave we have found a great restaurant- Stermasi, once beeing there you must to visit and enjoy that place. There is a very cosy and good restaurant near the parking, entering the beach (like beach bar), another great one you will find in a very long but fascinating village- Babin Kuk (that one on the right side of the road, up the stairs). Recommend those warmly!

Recently visited the beautiful island of Mljet and stayed at Franka's guest house. Our room consisted of the basics, bathroom, bedroom with a fridge ( which is all we needed really) and we had a balcony with an amazing view of the sea right below us. We were a short 5 minute walk from the few beaches. And there was also a market right behind the apartments.
The owners were welcoming and offered us a complimentary bottle of water as it was very hot and we had travelled a long way.
As it was a quite secluded island there was lack of transport. So we were luckily to higher a car out to visit the national park and cave of Odysseus (a MUST! )
If you are looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle than this is the place for you!
We will be visiting again! :)

Franka Apartmani is a good option in Mjlet if you want to be close to the best beaches on the island.
We arrived without a prior booking and were able to negotiate a price directly with the owner, which was slightly cheaper than the price we had seen on the internet.
The apartment we had was of generous size, with a lovely big terrace overlooking the sea. The kitchen was very small and basic but I suppose this is intented to be like that to incentivate you to have meals at their own restaurant.
When we asked for a supermarket we were told it's "very far away and difficult to find", in fact we found out it was just at the backside of the road so felt a bit cheated on that.
This place prides itself to be a guesthouse offering a genuine traditional dalmatian cuisine, with homemade dishes.
The truth is it enjoys a very good position and has a nice terrace where you can have lunch or dinner overlooking the bay. But we found other places in Croatia with a much better service and the dishes were really nothing special. In fact it is on the expensive side if you consider the portions that are really small.
We ordered chips, grilled sardines and calamari and a dalmatian salad one day and really what we most liked where the chips as they where tasty and homemade but the rest of dishes where just average.
Another day we were "offered" fresh oysters from the host, they were delicious but it should have been made clear from the start that this invitation was a payable one.
Also one of the waiters looked dirty and once he served the tables he sat down to have his own dinner and licked of his fingers, this was really disgusting specially because he then served the tables again without even washing his hands.
All of the staff seemed to be familiy and alltoghether they did well, apart from this small incidents we can't blame them as they were always friendly and after asking for a lift back to Sobra the host drove us back to the port. We payed half the price a taxi would have charged and mind you there is no regular bus service on the island. The bus are only running early morning round 6 am and late afternoon around 6 pm so it really doesn't make sense.
You need to hire a car if you stay here unless you are willing to pay high fees for taxis or just stay there.
Saplunara beach is really nice and there are two other beaches within walking distance, do not go to the far away beach, it is really a long walk and it's a ugly beach.
On the two closest beaches you have sunlounger service upon payment but if you stay at Franka guesthouse you have sunloungers just in front of the apartments for free.
The wifi only works in the restaurant area and sometimes it's a bit slow; at night it seems they switch it of.
Mjlet is a very undeveloped island, it is ideal if you want to escape the mass tourism places and just enjoy nature at its best.
