Stella Maris is a wonderful plantation style resort on a true Bahamian Island. Laid back; picturesque; crashing surf against the coral on the ocean side; interspersed with lovely powder sand beaches; large, magnificant beach area on the gulf side.
The staff is wonderful - friendly and efficient. They accommodate our requests with big smiles. They treat us like family, which is why we keep coming back. This was the sixth 2-wk stay in seven years. Great for us retired types.

Room Tip: Wi-Fi restricted to the club house.

We had a destination wedding at Stella Maris Resort and it was absolutely amazing! The staff was amazing and did everything to ensure both we and our guests were taken care of throughout our stay. Words aren't enough to express the gratitude we have to the Stella Maris staff for the execution of such a perfect wedding and anticipating every need before it's even declared. We look forward to spending many anniversaries there for years to come.

We especially enjoy being there and doing whatever fits the weather and our interests each day. We always meet interesting people, some become lasting friends. Our experience with the staff is that they are not only friendly, but treated us like family. That said, we appreciate the experience of the real Bahamas with real people, rather than a chain resort where an idealized version of reality is created; however, that is a good choice for many folks, but not us. When we have a concern or complaint we speak with the staff or management, and they address our concern. There are some issues, such as sand fleas that come out when the wind dies, as is the case in many parts of the Bahamas from our experience; so we go to the beach when it is windy, which is the case most days. Also, the resort needs some updating, and we understand that management is aware and working on it.

Rooms are clean, although extremely outdated. Staff is rude and not friendly unless you work hard to get to know them, minus a few who were kind from the start. Food was the absolute worst and I was sick almost every night from dinner. Fish sticks are frozen Gordon sticks you get from grocery. How do you not get fresh fish at resort in the Bahamas? The water they served was almost unbearable to drink. I am lucky that I did not have issues with No-see-ums, but other guest from our party including my husband got destroyed. Leaving horrendous marks that turned into puss, and itched for the entire 7 days we were there. The water is brown and comes with sand from the faucet, and simply disgusting. I wouldn't wash my daughters hair in fear she would swallow the water. One evening we went to Cape Santa Ana, and I only wish we had stayed there. Was not at all impressed by this place and would never return.

We are ever so sorry for and concerned over this party not having enjoyed their visit as they deserved. Here our needed comments, in sequence with the visitors’ script:

Our staff is widely known and complimented for its ready attention, friendliness and warmth. We have already followed up with needed action regarding the mentioned staff members who fell short of our standards.

Our food, likewise, routinely finds widespread praise. Yes, there is a ‘cuisine’ difference between casual snack plates and the much more extensive, very varied restaurant menu choices. Our resort has a long standing reputation of excellence meals as can be read on many of our reviews.

Water: There are three types: In-bathrooms = island ground water (which in dry-season may have a noticeable saline content), not brown, not with sand, not presenting any health hazards, but declared as “no drinking water”. At clubhouse/in restaurant: No-cost drinking water (accessible to guests for carrying to accommodations). And: Bottled drinking water. We presume, however, that the quoted “brown water” episode had been temporarily caused by a brief water pressure interruption, caused by a brief electrical ‘surge’, all internal to the individual seaside bungalow occupied thus.

Sand Flies: All (sub)-tropics have them, off and on. Calm/humid days can bring them out, normal “Bahama Spring” days hardly do. Some people are extremely susceptible to their bites’ reactions, others little or not at all. We truly feel for the inflicted visitors, few as there are.

Again, we express our regrets over these guests having departed Long Island with such sentiments, our considerable extra courtesies which we had provided not having overcome the effects of their perceived shortfalls – and we have communicated with them accordingly.

At first it looks like a pretty hotel on a beautiful beach. Our group of 4 stayed there for 1 night, and all 4 agree that never again would we stay there. We traveled during the Valentine's week 2016.

1) The entire area of Stella Maris Resort (including every inch of beach and pool area) is infested with Noseeums aka Sandflies. Every single hotel guest was complaining about being attacked by Noseeums every second (literally) of the evening we spent there. It was most prominent when we arrived to the hotel around 4 PM and walked around between the bars, beach and pool areas in our swimsuits all evening. All 4 of us were heavily covered in bug repellent, plus Baby Oil on top (recommended and sold at this hotel's gift store - DID NOT WORK), and even body lotion on top of all this. 2 out of 4 of us don't get bit by mosquitoes, and even those 2 were attacked by Noseeums. After 1 night at this resort every inch of our bodies is covered with mosquito-like bites, that cause severe itching to this day, 4 days later. I even wake up at night from severe itching (and I generally sleep like a rock). I pray these bites don't leave permanent marks. I am not even talking about the fact that I can't wear any summer clothes (we live in Miami) because of the millions of red itchy bumps I am currently dealing with.

2) The hotel rooms are old, the faucet water is stinky. The beds are not the most comfortable. Overall, however, the rooms are acceptable.

3) No wi-fi, except in the lobby/ lobby restaurant area.

4) Almost every staff member is fairly pleasant though. Free breakfast.

If you have no choice but to stay at this hotel, wear full-coverage clothing (sweatsuit etc), stay in your room, and beware that a bug repellant will not help if you decide to wear your swimsuit. Before we stayed at Stella Maris Resort, we stayed 5 nights at Bahamas Dreamin Ocean Villas and LOVED it. That's in the Deadman's Cay area, close to all the attractions (Dean's Blue Hole, Harrison's Cave etc.) and the area is not affected by these bugs whatsoever. We highly recommend Bahamas Dreamin Instead, and it's cheaper too.

If only one could find an environmentally responsible and economically affordable solution to Sand Flies! All (sub)-tropics have them, off and on. Quiet and humid days bring them out, the normal and nicely breezy Bahama days do not. Location matters little, often time of the day does.

That is why a visitor thinks that one place is “infested”, the other is “insect-free”. Most visitors are unaffected, but some are highly susceptible. The latter need to take precautions, in terms of anti-exposure and anti-bite-measures – as is generally suggested.

Our hearts always go out to those who suffer. No – when bite-affected skin heals there are no after-effects. Deeply regretting that these guests suffered such.
