We have just come back from Cat Island, and our stay at Greenwood was just beyond all ou expectations. We could not have imagined it better.

First, the scenery is perfect : the place is friendly and cute, and the beach is the most perfect you can imagine, with pink sand and miles to walk, alone as there's hardly anyone on this side of the island (or even on the island...). It's the perfect secluded place to relax and disconnect from the outside world (although the Wifi connection is pretty good).

Despite being on a small island, the food is very good also, and in Bahamian quantities, so you don't risk being still hungry after diner.

The managers, Pauline and Antoine, have started a year ago or so, so older reviews should be read with care. They are doing a fantastic job to keep guest happy and entertained, and they helped us with lots of small requests. They are very friendly and careful, wanting the guests to really enjoy their time here.
And they helped a lot to make our wedding on the beach perfect. The arch they built was lovely, and they managed to take care of our cameras during the wedding, even building a small "tailored" set-up for our action cam during the ceremony.

We really felt for this place, and so did all the customers staying at the same time. As you feel privileged to be here, you discuss easily with the other guests that share this privilege, and that makes the atmosphere even more relaxed.

We know we are going to come back to celebrate a wedding anniversary, we already miss the place !

You know the feeling: work's been hectic, Just moved house - just need to get away?

That was our starting point two weeks ago. We'd read the reviews and as late "forty somethings", just wanted to relax and not have to DO anything. Thanks first of all to all you previous reviewers who have captured Greenwood's spirit marvellously. We'd been to Grand Bahama before and loved it, but this time wanted to try a different island.

Pauline met us on arrival (taxi took 40mins) and welcomed us into the resort. I told her her fame had spread to Europe for hospitality. A warm welcome, and orientation of the resort: then taken to a clean comfortable bungalow in Island style, we felt very much at home.

One reviewer stated it's like a cross between a friend's beach house and a hotel - that is very accurate. Their motto is 'Find yourself'. We spent two weeks doing just that. Antoine appeared, briefly, to say hello, as he was busy on jobs. He was always busy doing something - even finding time to kitesurf on the beach.

It's very laid back. I never know what to pack when I go away, but casual is the order of the day here. Beachwear for day and shorts/teeshirts for evening. The breeze can get chilly so a hoodie or sweater can be useful. I found it hard to stay up later than 10:30pm most days!!

Breakfasts can be as continental or full as you wish. Lunches are delicious - the wings with the hot sauce my favourite. Dinner choice is requested during the day, with fish or chicken the Bahamian way being just what you need, created by their in house chefs. Visitors come for lunch and wander in most days.

But the BEACH!!! Must be how Branson feels on Necker. Almost a private 8-mile beach! We saw two strangers in 14 days while doing our daily walks. The wet sand is like silt between your toes - the finest sand and best we've ever had. It is just so beautiful on the beach. The Trade Winds keep you cool belying the sun's power - care is needed.

For the more actively minded, kayaks, snorkelling, dive trips, kiteboard lessons, bicycle hire, car rental - all right here. For the less inclined there's "hook and ring" (lol), painting the driftwood, chess, pool in the cellar, wifi in the bar and just plain old fashioned reading.

There's an honesty bar, serve yourself, that I found novel. But don't come looking for nightlife - choose another place. Antoine will get you up to jam on guitar if you can play. We had a 'movie night' which was great - the other guests also just 'got it' - the relaxed vibe.

We rented a car one day and visited the whole island - to Shanna's Cove in the north and Hawks Nest in the Southwest- all in a day with a stop for lunch at the Old Bight Fish Fry. Go and see The Hermitage too!

Antoine and Pauline are perfect hosts. Just the right amount of visibility. Their dedication to improving the resort can be seen in action during your stay. We cannot thank or praise them enough.

Supplies are tricky here - go with the flow - sometimes something runs out. I've seen people spoil their own holiday in the past by not being flexible to Island life.

So what's not to like? Well...

The 'No-see-ums' or microbugs can be a pain. You need deet. Don't know if they get you in the day or the night but they're out there. No mozzies seen though. We all got little itchy bites from something invisible.

The deserted beach does get some flotsam and jetsam wash up during high tides. It's a shame but a scourge of modern times and it's not litter - just plastic junk.

That said...

If you want beauty, relaxation and an unhurried and an un-pestered vacation, this is definitely worth a look. You'll be well looked after and find it hard to motivate yourself to even go and snorkel!! You'll definitely want to write a review so that others find it and it will be very hard not to come back again!!

This is a quiet lovely place on the edge of the world with the most beautiful beach I've ever seen. The hosts Pauline and Antoine were so gracious and attended to any need.
We could hear the waves at night, the room was sparkling clean, the food was great and suited any need!
Everything was perfect! Thank you!!

Look, almost every beach you go to on Cat Island your like "wow....that's gorgeous". Than you come to Greenwood and your jaw drops. Miles and miles and miles of white/pink sand, crystal clear aqua blue water, palm trees and NO ONE in sight on the beach. Its yours to play on for as far as you want. STUNNING.....STUNNING.

The rooms are basic, but good to go. You will never want to be in the room anyway with a beach like that. Antoine and Paulina and A+ hosts, giving you what you need and you want for nothing. Food is delicious, here 5 days and not one bad meal. While it is out of the way a bit who cares? Once you get here you don't want to leave. Ever.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

My girlfriend and I returned from a 4 night stay at Greenwood about a week ago and just can't stop talking about the "next visit." If you go once, you're sure to return. We spent a few days on the beach, which is the most beautiful I've ever seen, and a day driving the island to get acquainted with the area. There was good food available at the local restaurants but by far the best food on the island was prepared at Greenwood by their in-house chefs. Pauline and Antoine, the inn managers and hosts, were absolutely fabulous and treat you like family from the moment you arrive. We just can't recommend Greenwood enough.
