Hillcrest Guest House
Ranked #3 of 5 Cruz Bay B&B and Inns

OK.....this is the real deal with Hillcrest. For those people (myself included) who are normally used to staying at 5 Star Hotels this place is not for you. And that is OK. I came to St John with a good friend last year and stayed with Phyllis for 5 days. Our goal was not to stay at a resort with all the trimmings that you'd expect. We wanted a clean place with a good bed, shower and basic kitchen facilities. We weren't looking for Bali Hai. And to be honest for the price we paid we didn't expect it. What we got is exactly what was promised........central location, good sturdy 5 minute walk from downtown Cruz Bay, clean room, bathroom and kitchen. OK....the view is good from the common areas. And it's nice to sit out and have a glass of wine at the end of the day. But it's not the $700 a night view from your private balcony at Caneel Bay. And I think most people realize that when they come.....or at least they should.
We had a great time on St. John. We were out and about everyday from early morning until dark. We'd come back, change and go out to dinner somewhere and come back and go to bed.
St. John is just about as perfect as you can get, especially being so easy to get to from the US. No accomodation on the island is perfect. People can always find something to complain about.
And yes....not everything was perfect at Hillcrest but when we arrived we were met by Phyllis. The room was clean, the shower worked, the refrigerator was stocked and we only had a 5 minute walk to town. Go stay at Caneel Bay if you want something "refined". It really is a beautiful property. Stay at the Westin is you like chain hotels. It won't disappoint. Stay at Estate Lindholm if you want a pool with a real "boutique hotel" experience. It is what it says it is.
For us....the Hillcrest worked great. The price was right. The room was clean and comfortable. Everything worked just fine and we were able to get anywhere we needed to go without having to rent a car. You get the point.

This is the second time we've stayed here and have not been disappointed. It's not the Ritz, but we much prefer local ambience to staying with spoiled rich kids. Phyllis is down to earth and a super innkeeper. She provides you with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The hill is a tough climb but after a couple of treks, it's not so bad. Besides, the views are beautiful. We highly recommend it for comfort and convenience. We will be back again!

We stayed in the Front Suite in Early November 2011. The room was clean and well stocked with liquor, drink mixes, bacon, eggs, coffee, and various other small food items. Phyllis was very helpful, even coming to find us and lead us back to the house when we got lost after arriving and picking up our rental car. It is also nice that she will leave you to yourself unless you need something. It is very nice to be within walking distance of Cruz Bay, but the walk back up the hill could be difficult for some.

There is snorkel equipment, coolers, and chairs available to use for free, although not all of it was in working order. Since we were the only ones staying that week we picked through it to find the usable ones without a problem.

Our favorite part of staying at the guest house was making drinks in the evening and sitting on the private balcony to watch the thunderstorms. This was our first visit to St. John and I hope we can come here again. We would definitely stay at Hillcrest Guest house again!

Room Tip: The front suite has a private balcony with the best views.

Phyllis, the owner, was wonderful. Our room was stocked with wine, rum, breakfast foods, cold drinks, and even ice cream! We had a nice view of Cruz Bay and the use of coolers, snorkel gear, and free DVDs to watch in the evening. Our room was a little worn and the bathroom needed a little attention, but the outstanding price and location make these minor issues. Highly recommended and we would definitely stay there again. St. John was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed the hiking and snorkeling on the island. Trunk Bay is has the 'snorkel trail' and all the tourists. I'd recommend going there early in the morning, then moving on down the road to another bay when all the tourists show up. We did several hikes, including the Reef Bay and Ram's Head trails - both great hikes.

I stayed here as it was one of the cheapest places to stay on the island (not cheap in general terms however) but was disappointed mainly with the standard of cleanliness and the insect infestations but let's start with the positives :
Pros - excellent location, walking distance to cruz bay shops and restaurants (however the steep hill climb was not easy esp in the heat), owner picked up from ferry terminal, welcome guest basket of fruits very nice touch, AC in good working order and good sized rooms.

Cons - thick layer of grime on most surfaces including the kitchen, holes in the mosquite grilles so hey got in and we got bitten to death and worst of all at night cockroaches came out to play in the kitchen!
I wanted to leave but my travelling companion refused. I wish I had as despit how beautiful st john was as an islanf when I remember it the memories as marred by the dread I felt on having to return to this place...

A professional crew cleans suites before and after arrival. Guest are encouraged to place trash in receptacles just outside their door. Suites are inspected and sprayed in case of attracting anything crawling.
