Best Day on the Island

My wife and I were here for our honeymoon and our favorite day on the island was the day we went out with Island Roots. Our captain and guide, Thomas, was very knowledgeable about both the best snorkeling spots and also the history and goings-on of the island.

Our trip stayed local around St. John. We went around the island, stopping at scenic or interesting places. Our guide took us to some really great snorkeling places that we would have been unable to get to otherwise. I got my best underwater pictures from the snorkeling during this trip.

Great day on the water!
Review of: Full Day Private Boat Charter exploring the "Best of the USVI"

During my visit to St. John I was fortunate enough to spend a day on the water on Island Roots. We stayed around St. John and St. Thomas with a stop at the pizza pi boat for a yummy lunch. Our captain was Thomas, a charming young man, who was quite knowledgeable about the sea life we observed while snorkeling. He took us to small bays only accessible by boat, but unfortunately, we did not find any whales. The boat is smaller than some of the charter boats which allows for a more personal and intimate day on the water. I would definitely hope to go on Island Roots another time!

Thomas mentioned you guys were also out on the Bad Kitty with his sister Kate! Pretty cool you got meet the both Hanna siblings from N. Carolina on the tiny island of St. John.

Under water wonderland

Enough with the magazine reviews and what friends might tell you to visit. The adventure has to start with some unknown feelings. Don't call your captain and tell him where to go and what to do for the day. An adventure should not be planned out .
Jason and Thomas know this island as well as other islands for the secret excursions. Hurricane hole? Eagle shoals? I trusted Captain Jason with an unknown adventure snorkel and boat trip and he came through. 15 years of visiting and he still was able to bring me to a new place. Island Roots is the excursion adventure that I will take again and again for customer service and always new secret places to visit on my charter every year !!! Thank you Jason!!!

Excellent experience!

One of the best days on vacation. Thomas our captain was great and gave us a history lesson of the islands as well.

Great Trips and Great Captains!

We went out with Island Roots on two full-day snorkeling trips while we were on St John. There were just the two of us, so the 20’ boat was perfect. Our first trip was with Jason for a trip to the BVIs. We went to Little Thatch Island, the Indians, the Caves, ate lunch at Willy T’s and then Flanagan Island. The snorkeling was incredible & I loved each spot for different reasons. Jason asked lots of questions and took the time to find out what we wanted to see & do. We had a great time and enjoyed Jason’s stories of St John. He is super nice, so relaxed and flexible.

Our second trip was with Thomas for a local St John experience. We’ve had lots of experience snorkeling the different bays accessible from St John so we were excited to visit some of the reefs only accessible by boat. The winds were pretty constant our whole stay on St John, so it made it interesting to travel by boat from bay to bay, but Island Roots new 20 foot boat cut the water wonderfully and made for a pretty smooth and dry ride; no matter which direction we were headed.

Thomas did a wonderful job, too. He brought us to Lavonga Island (fabulous!), Whistling Cay, Menneback Bay and Hurricane Hole for mangrove snorkeling. As we were headed back to town, we saw Jason anchored with the big boat in what they like to call the Secret Bay. Jason hopped on board our boat and brought us into the bay, then we all jumped in to check out the biggest porcupine fish Jason has every seen – which says a lot!

This was our first time with Island Roots and we will definitely book a trip with them on our next stay. Jason & Thomas were great captains & more than met our expectations! We really had a lot of fun with them and were really happy with how they catered to us on our trips. Thanks much guys and looking forward to going out with you guys again!!
