“Olde Worlde Sophistication and Charm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2012

The Montpelier is a beautifully restored old plantation house with the restaurant and dining areas in the historic building and accommodation in individual lodges in the attractive gardens. The owners manage the hotel and there is a level of personal attention and service by Muffin and her family which make you feel more like guests in their house than as hotel residents. There is a house party feel too with pre-dinner cocktails in the main drawing room at a set time where guests get to chat to one another. It was our first time but many of the guests seem to have been regulars for years but we felt just as well looked after and there was certainly no lack of friendliness to us new recruits!

The lodge rooms are very private with lovely views across the well-tended gardens to the sea in the distance. Our plantation room was simply but stylishly furnished with a huge four poster bed and very light and airy with windows on each side.

The food was exceptionally good. Dinner was served in the large open-fronted dining room decorated with dramatic modern paintings with strong colours contrasting with two old mill wheels set vertically as a central feature. Disappointingly breakfast was served on a verandah at the back of the hotel and it was a shame not to be able to enjoy the views from the lovely dining room.

We would have liked an alternative option to the fine dining experience in the restaurant. On a five day stay we tend to want a lighter option for a couple of evenings but this wasn't available and although we cut out a couple of courses on one evening it's not really set up for anything other than fine dining.

The beach is a 15 minute trip and the hotel organise a minibus once in the morning and then returning in the afternoon so if you want to go outside the set times you have to hire a car or take a taxi. We had been spoiled on Antigua but even so the beach was a little scruffy and to get to it you have to go through the middle of a major construction site. However the beach itself is a nice position looking out towards St Kitts. On one day a barbecue and cricket match was arranged which was great fun and thankfully not taken seriously by anyone!

We mixed our Caribbean trip with visits to Antigua and Nevis. Nevis is more reserved and more what Muffin called "old Caribbean". It was a nice contrast with the more outgoing way of life on Antigua. But island hopping is not as easy as it should be. LIAT the Caribbean airline have timetables but not that they keep to! To get back to Antigua on a 17 minute flight from St Kitts it took a water taxi from Nevis a taxi from the jetty and then a 6 hour wait at the airport before LIAT turned up. No wonder the locals say LIAT stands for Leave Island Any Time!

We would recommend the Montpelier and it really lives up to its relais chateau status. For us a 5 night stay worked well as it gave us a chance to see the island while at the same time spending time relaxing by the beach.

As we drove upon this property we were greeted by a magnificent tree and the remains of the sugar works. The grounds were well kept and the facilities as well. The suites were spacious and should satisfy ones needs. Polite and friendly staff is available and quite attentive for those making this their destination.

Stayed here for one night then stayed one night at Four Seasons.

The thing about this place is that everything seems good at first, but then you realize is not.
private beach - kind of ugly and lame (same with the pool)
property - seems big / pretty but omg there's so many bugs/ mosquitoes.... made my skin so itchy.
we stayed at the villa.. the backyard hot tub looked dirty.
most importantly.. this place is not cheap! with this money, I rather spend it at Four Season where you get the complete experience of a 5 star resort.

The dinner mill is nice, just come to have dinner here, but don't actually stay for the night!

Wow, where do I start? My wife and I just came back from 5 (too short) days at Montpelier and without exaggeration the most relaxing getaway we've taken in over 20 years. The grounds are beautiful -- mountain setting taking advantage of peaceful gardens, amazing views, cool breezes, and superb staff. The whole crew -- Jackie, Muffin, Kaddy, Nicholas, Javier, Valarie...--just amazing. No TVs or alarm clocks in the rooms, beautiful and spacious, best-on-the-island food (even the 4 Seasons refugees would rather eat here), local flavor and genuine friendliness everywhere. If you're looking for Club Nevis or nonstop party atmosphere, try something down on the beach. If you just want to get away, really detox from stress of daily life, and rediscover yourself and your partner, this is your place. It's amazing how may repeat guests we encountered, that should tell you a lot about Montpelier. Nevis is a wonderful island (better choice than St Kitts) and Montpelier leaves all other options in the dust. We are already planning our return trip.

Room Tip: All rooms have a great view, we got upgraded to a Plantation Suite but really there are no bad choic...

It has been just under a month since we returned from Montpelier Plantation and we are still reliving the experience and longing for a return.

The odd thing is that as beautiful as Montpelier is (gorgeous), and as friendly and helpful as the staff are (stupendous), we only truly 'fell' for the place halfway through our two-week holiday when we realised how relaxed we were, how the staff and guests seemed like friends we'd known forever and how the combination of great food, wine and conversation provided us with fantastic days and evenings.

For those wanting practical information, the Plantation consists of, we would say, 20 rooms and suites all very well appointed within the lush grounds of the hotel. The heart of the hotel during the day is the pool and pool bar and, in the evening, the Great Room where guests congregate before dinner for aperitifs and a chinwag.

The lunch menu is very good, providing a host of light options, the Greek and Caesar salads being especially good. Some reviewers have complained about the dinner being too rich or too 'haut cuisine' but whilst it is termed as a 5-course meal, two of these are an amuse-bouche and coffee and the starter, mains and dessert/cheese are perfectly proportioned. We never left the table feeling overly-full, which is saying something since we cleaned our plates every night, such was the high-quality of the food. We would go as far to say that it was some of the best food we have had in the Caribbean.

During our first week we stayed in a Plantation Room which, as is described on the hotel's website, is simple & elegant. If we were to be overly-critical we would say that it was looking a little tired but it was spotlessly clean, provided all of the amenities one would expect and had a beautiful veranda overlooking the gardens and the sea beyond. It is also absent any TV or internet access ensuring that one slows to the Caribbean rhythm of time very quickly.

For the second week we moved to the Garden Suite, which is one of the newer rooms and is much more our style. Modern clean lines, split level, huge double shower with ceiling 'rain' shower heads, a lovely sitting area inside and a veranda and a gazebo outside.

It would be churlish to mention any specific staff since all were equally fantastic and within a day or so each knew your name, your room number and your preferences (e.g. second glass of wine after lunch when the Scrabble board comes out!). Nothing was too much trouble and with the family-owners very visible throughout the hotel there was a real feeling of being part of something special.

Our only goal before this holiday was to get some serious R&R to get us ready for whatever 2012 will throw at us. To say we achieved our goal would be an understatement - we got the R&R in spadefuls - but we also met some wonderful people, shared a lot of fun and jokes, laughed freely, drank heartily and made many new friends.

PS: We have booked to return in Dec 2012. Woo-hoo!
