My husband and I stayed for a week at Simpson Bay(previously Pelican Bay Resort & Marina). We were pretty nervous, as it apparantly SHUT DOWN in January. We were not able to reach anyone from the resort, and had to get our information from the internet. We spent several very tense weeks, wondering if the place would actually re-open, or if RCI would be able to place us elsewhere for our scheduled week (we already had our airline tickets!), or if we should try to locate another place on our own...etc...lots of stress!
Much to our relief, the resort did re-open...I believe in February. We were soo glad to get THAT news! I also received an email response from a very friendly lady at the resort, Claudia Desquens Pedroza . We exchanged a few emails that basically re-assured us that our reservation was still confirmed, and that we could expect a smooth and hassle free vacation.
We also received email from Marco Campos, who is a vacation specialist at the resort. He was able to give us even more specific informaiton as our departure time approached. He guided us through a room upgrade (an additional $400, I think-totally worth it!), and answered all of our questions.
We were originally (through RCI) placed in a condo in the "B" building. It probably was totally adequate. That building is on a hill, with fantastic ocean views. Our room would have been similar...one bedroom, full living room & kitchen, balcony, etc... My husband has difficulty walking very far due to a bad knee and a bad hip, so we thought that getting up and down the hill each day might be too much for him. Also, our primary planned activity for the week was scuba diving. So when Marco offered us the chance to stay in the newest building, which was ocean front, and close to the dive shop, we accepted, even with the additional cost.
We were thrilled with our room. It looked brand new. Marble tile throughout, sparkling clean, beautiful! It was literally steps from both the dive shop, and in the other direction, one of the pools. We were completely satisfied with our decision to upgrade!
We did find it amusing that everyone other than the resort staff continues to refer to the resort as Pelican, rather than the new name of Simpson Bay. Since the actual town is called Simpson Bay, I can see where it would get pretty confusing.
We stayed in Room 103. As I said, we loved it. The kitchen had everything we needed, including dishsoap and dishwasher detergent. The bathroom had a separate vanity area, almost a hall type...it had one door that led from the living/dining area; one door that led to the bedroom; and one door that opened into the bathroom (toilet/tub/shower). The vanity area had two sinks, plenty of counter space, full size mirror and a separate make-up mirror for each sink, and I believe four drawers for your bath "stuff". There was also a small closet that held the basic cleaning supplies such as broom, mop, dustpan.
The living/dining area was nice also. The floorplan is open. We entered to one side of the kitchen. There was a small breakfast bar with two stools. Just past the kitchen was the dining area. Basically just a table with four chairs. It was a glass topped table and very prettily set. Past the dining table was the mail living room area. We only used the living room once, lol, as we spent most of our time outdoors. There was a sofa that had a sleeper bed, two end chairs, tv/stereo cabinet, a murphy bed, and the usual tables/lamps.
The bedroom....The bedroom had a comfortable king sized bed. The closets occupy one entire wall, and have convenient spots to store your suitcases. There was also a safe in the closet. The extra blankets/pillows were already overhead in the closet. Hangers were provided. There were two nightstands as well as two full dressers, in addition to the shelving in the closet. The tv was on one of the dressers, leaving a nice desk area free for us to use our laptop. Plenty of plug in locations for all of our electronics.
Both the living room and the bedroom have sliders that open onto a nice sized patio. With the curtains open from either room the view was spectacular! The patio had a table and four chairs on one side, and the other had two full length loungers with a small drinks table between them. Every day, at least twice daily, someone came along to clean off any bird droppings, lol. We really enjoyed the patio during our stay.
The pool nearest us was the one just outside the building that houses the lobby and the gym. There is an area sectioned off for children by concrete pillars. There is a swim up bar where you can actually order lunch/dinner as well. The bartender actually goes to pick it up and brings it back for you. I think it is ordered from one of the other bars on site.
In front of the pool, sepatated by a low hedge and sidewalk, is a small/mini-dock. You can walk out the end and climb down the ladder into the ocean. You cannot dive/jump in, as the water is only about 4 feet deep there. The water is crystal clear and super warm (about 80 degrees during our stay). From the bottom of the ladder you can swim out to a floating platform to lay out or just sit on.
To the left of our room was the dive shop. There is a decent sized "strip mall" type area with several places. Aqua Mania is there, as well as Ice Cream Planet (misleading name...french place where they serve bkfst/lunch...and also have gellato). There was a good sized Italian place at the end, but we never did eat there. Aqua Mania is the place to book your excursions and they were great. Very helpful and friendly. They also have a decent gift shop.
A 10 minute stroll down the hill from the resort is the small town of Simpson Bay. We did make the walk and visited the grocery store (bring your own bags!) next to Burger King, cannot recall the name of it, but it is a regular full sized grocery. We also walked a bit further and checked out the town. There are several restaurants within walking distance (many within a three to five minute walk). You definately do not have to rent a car when staying here, unless you are very brave and decide to drive to explore the rest of the island. I would recommend a taxi. They are reasonable, and are used to the insane driving on the island. Seriously, most cars are dented up, so you know it's pretty bad, lol.
The water is drinkable, tho we found that keeping it cold removed the slightly odd taste. The milk that you purchase is different than milk in the states....just different. I don't drink milk, but hubby poured it down the drain, lol.
Overall, we decided that the week we spent was the best vacation that we have ever had. We would definately recommend this location to others.

Room Tip: If you can, upgrade to the new building

The Positives 1st:
Best location on island if you like to walk around.
Great little casino.
Tons of places to eat.
Monday afternoon $15 sail along the island is a deal and a great way to meet other guests.
Business center is in a great location next to casino.
Plenty of towels in the room.
Kitchen was filled with necessities (salt and pepper included).
The pools are awesome and plentiful.

The Negatives:
Toilet quit working 5 out of 7 days we were there. It got so bad one day we had to leave.
Microwave was replaced 3 times (we arrived to a broken one).
Dead cockroach found in bathroom.
No resort map was available to us upon arrival. We were told to come back the next day.
Laundry detergent is a FORTUNE! Laundromat is $4 per load + detergent.
Fitness center is $6/day/person

Amazing resort! We stayed in the newer villas - 2 bedroom. Included separate living room, kitchen, 2 balconies. Included 2 murphy beds in living room. Staff was extremely friendly. Walking distance to many great restaurants.

Unlike many of the other hotels in the area, WiFi and parking were free! WiFi had a great signal throughout the property. Excellent views.

Very kid friendly - I will be bringing my wife and kids back to this place!

Visited the French side - not as much activity and VERY rude French people.

Room Tip: best view - upper .best for kids: ground near pool

The resort is definitely older but has a beautiful view! The location is great, close to bars, grocery store and restaurants. We went during a slow time and since we were there they have closed the "Pelican" and renamed the resort. We did get our exchange unit changed when we got there, simply by asking. Went from the B buildings to a Bay view in the M building. We met some awesome vacation pals during the week there!
I was not overly impressed with some of the staff, but that might have something to do with all the behind the scenes issues they were having. I am happy to say that we purchased an ocean front week while were there and a bay view 2 months later. The island was easy to navigate and fun to drive around and stop at other beaches.
The piano bar was fun for a night, it's open VERY late! Spend a little money and rent a car for the week. It's worth it and it's pretty cheap. The grocery store at the corner of the road up to the resort is within walking distance and decent priced. The Stone restaurant was "ok" but I wasn't overly impressed with it. Looking forward to returning!

Room Tip: Ask kindly for an unit change to M or F!
