My wife and I went to Vieques on a bussines trip. We stay on The Great Scape B&B by accident since ther were no vacances in other hotels on the island. We do not regreat our choice. The place is beutifull and quiet. The pool is cristal clear and Dona makes you feel like you are at home. The only problem we had was that we stay only for a short time. At night you can enjoy the view of the stars from the pool bar, a comodity in this days. The hotel is close to Vieques main street but at the same time is far from any distractions.
It's a great place to stay.

Great Escape is a good compromise for people who want something clean, peaceful and attractive, but who don't mind a few quirks. You will find the great mixed with the not-so-great here, and as long as you're relaxed about it you'll love the place. For example, the tiles on our floors were absolutely beautiful and expensive looking. But our incredibly cheaply made bathroom door didn't close right and made a very loud rattling vibrating sound anytime someone went in or out. The housekeeper not only cleaned our room immaculately but closed up our suitcases (which were lying all over the floor) and stacked them in the closet! But the shower volume was so low that my daughter literally started laughing when she turned it on. Overall we really liked it and would return, but again, don't expect the Hix Island House... this is a lot cheaper, more personal, and homier.

Finally, another pro for this place is that they were willing to take a reservation for two nights... it seems like a lot of Vieques hotels have a three-night minimum.

There is normally a two night minimum but our reservation fell in between two others, Dana allowed us to stay for one night. This hotel is located on Route 201 with handwritten signs pointing out the hotel. Be sure to keep a close eye for the signs. The driveway is very steep and uneven dirt path so you will probably need a SUV or Jeep. The Jeep/SUV will come in handy when visiting some of the more rural locations (i.e. Green Beach, Nature Reserve, etc.) The rooms are very nice inside with tall white ceilings and a ceiling fan. The rooms are very clean. My only complaint about the room was that the shower had no pressure. I also did not see any shampoo but I had my own. Dana is very helpful and friendly. If she doesn't know the answer to your question, she will try her best to find one for you. The breakfast was a nice change from the heavy food I was eating everyday -- assorted cereals, toast, eggs, and fresh fruit. I would come back. Many people complained about the tax but she will give you a break if you pay in cash.

In quality accomodation starved Vieques, this is one of the better places to stay. Located on top of a hll with almost constant trade winds, this B&B is 15 minutes (and $5 per person via publicos) away from the ferry terminal. Terrific fixtures, modern decor, a pool with views of the island and the ocean in the distance make this a pleasant, quiet place to spend a few days unwinding.

The rooms are all differently furnished, and the entire property exhibits the whimsicality of the owner. Some rooms have AC and TV, others don't. Beach towels are provided for free, and other beach and snorkelling equipment is available for rent.

Breakfast was simple but delightful - eggs plus a rich variety of cereals, breads and spreads. And you can pick guavas or berries from the garden if you wish to add a little fresh fruit to your morning !

The hostess Dana is as helpful as they come. We landed up at her place because our first place had double booked us. We were lucky! Not only did did she welcome us warmly, she also helped us out with getting a car (you really need a 4WD vehicle to see the island in all its beauty) and arranging activities for us. She even dropped us back at the ferry terminal for a nominal $15 charge.

I wish I could have given this property 4 or 5 Stars because it has so much going for it, but there were a couple of snafus. Dana had reopened the place for 4 days after her absence of a few months when we showed up. He absence showed. The soaps were mildewy and hadn't been changed, and we spotted a little mouse lurkng in our room. (Dana promptly set up a trap and caught it!). One of the other couples spotted a roach and a lizard in their room. In another room, the ventilator fan had a burnt wire that gave a foul smell. Don't get me wrong - this is not a roach motel. This is a fabulous, well maintained property on top of a country hill in a warm tropical island. So you would expect some of these things, plus I am sure Dana will fix things once she settles in. One final note - there is a 10% "service charge" added, so make sure you budget for it when you compare room rates.

We stayed at the Great Escape for 4 nights and LOVED it. We were enchanted with the place from the moment we got there. We arrived at 10PM and Dana - the owner, was waiting for us. We were offered cold drinks and were introduced to the other guests that were on the terrace . The room was amazing for the price. High ceilings, tiled floors, king bed, balcony,...very tastefully done. The grounds are also beautiful. Before going to bed every night we sat by the pool looking at the sky. The breakfast was v good. Dana treated us like old friends. When we had car problems she gave us a ride to town. We were sad to live. We will definitely stay there again.
