When it comes to your honeymoon there is only ONE choice and its here. My husband and I spent 2 glorious weeks of pampering in this corner of paradise.
We were lucky enough to have concierge service, an immaculate beautiful room overlooking negrils spectacular beach front. The food amazing with an amazing mix of carribean to grill, to Italian in Dinos restaurant. We are an Italian-Irish couple so can be choosy when it comes to pasta but were never dissapointed!!
The staff were amazing, the cocktails perfect, and the entertainment the best Ive seen with the best 'playmakers' in the world......we were so sad to leave and are planning a return as soon as the bank manager approves. Even the odd shower ( it was the start of rainy season ) could not dampen our moods. You can do everything from absolutely nothing (my choice) or as many activities both water and terra ferma. ....thank you Jeffery, Nadine, DJMASE,Dwayne ( from watersports), Tashana, Jovanni, Willie and Ryan and everyone else that makes up the best staff in the world.......one love and soon come back
Rachel and Giuseppe Di Biase.

My Wife and I, plus 42 guests (family and friends,) traveled to Sandals Negril to celebrate our wedding. I Honestly do not have one complaint. From the bus ride from airport to hotel, to the check in/out process, everything went as smooth as can be. The food was outstanding. Water sports were always available. The staff, to name a few, Shermaine out wedding coordinator, Julian from the catamaran cruise, Danae, Nadine, Shemoy, Dr. Memories, Big Papa, Smiley, Gawayne...cannot remember them all, they did however, always adress our group by name, were so helpfull in getting us ready for the wedding and showing us a good time. If anyone is reading this review to make a decision on using Sandals as their destination wedding, I 100% approve, and would highly recommend it to anyone. I cannot wait to go back and see all of the freinds we made.

We booked the Millionaire Honeymoon Penthouse One Bedroom Suite with Whirlpool which includes Butler service back in the summer of 2009 for May 2011. Our travel agent is the wonderful Amy McHugh of Dream Makers Vacation Services who takes care of you before, during and after your vacation. My husband and I are Diamond level return guests with Sandals and enjoy low-key, relaxing vacations. Sandals Negril exceeded our expectations in every area!

Room

The room was gorgeous and was exactly as it appears on the Sandals Website. You come into the room with a closet to your right and a bathroom area to your left. The closet was a walk-in and huge. We had more than enough room and more than enough hangers. One nice thing was having shelving to put your shoes on. The safe is also in the closet along with an ironing board and iron, umbrella and the blowdryer. The bathroom has two big vessel sinks, an open tiled shower, a whirlpool tub with shuttered doors that open to the bedroom. There was a separate toilet room with a phone.
There were 2 large flat screen tvs in the bedroom and sitting area. There was even a step stool to use to climb into the bed if you are short (We didn’t need it and set it aside.) The sitting room had a small sectional sofa. There was a huge entertainment center which held the bar items, mini-fridge, tv and also had plenty of drawers for our folded items.

The balcony had a small table which was perfect for breakfast dining and also a loveseat. I enjoyed having my last cup of coffee on the loveseat while watching the ocean. We did face part of Hedonism’s grounds but only ever saw a housekeeper and maintenance men at breakfast time. You could hear the fountain from the pool in the room beneath you and if you looked hard enough, you could see into their pool area SORT OF. I only looked once and didn’t see anyone and never tried again. But be warned if you are in the private pool rooms on the first floor, that your privacy may be limited by the nosiness of the people in the room above you.

We requested that our room be cleaned early in the day through our butler and it was cleaned early without fail each day. We also had turndown service each evening even though we ate around 7pm each night which would have been “late” at other resorts and cause us to miss turndown. Our room was also in good repair. The drains in the vessel sinks drain slowly so be advised that you might not want to let the water run while brushing your teeth (as an example.) Its better for the environment anyway haha.

Dining
On our first evening, we asked our butler, Basil, if we could eat at 7:15 at Barefoot by the Sea. He had us meet him in the main bar at 7pm so that he could escort us over. This is one thing that we loved. On all nights, our butlers met us at a bar vs. coming to our room to walk us over. This was nice since we are usually “early” and we could arrive and have a drink vs. sit anxiously in our room waiting for the butler to arrive. Our butlers arranged our dinner table each evening. We only had one reservation (Kimono’s) but we had a reserved table each evening in the restaurants with our name on it and specially decorated. It was a very nice touch.

We dined at Barefoot by the Sea twice. The conch salad is fabulous here as an appetizer. Jay enjoyed the seafood chowder as his appetizer. I had the jerk snapper both times. It was to die for! Jay had a steak/coconut shrimp platter the first evening and seafood jambalaya the second. We enjoyed the toes in the sand atmosphere at this restaurant. The desserts were just okay so we skipped them on our second visit.
We ate at the Sundowner restaurant once for dinner and once for breakfast. For the Whitehouse fans out there, this restaurant will remind you of Eleanor’s. We ate outside at dinner and inside for breakfast. Dinner was the basa (fish) for me and I think lamb for my husband. At breakfast, I had the bananas foster French toast and my husband had an assortment of breakfast items. We sat indoors (with air conditioning) for breakfast and it felt great. It was pretty warm here and had this restaurant been open Friday evening, we’d have gone back and requested to sit indoors.

We had Dino’s one evening and we loved it but were attacked by mosquitos. We needed to have put on our insect repellent for this restaurant. We ordered a Chianti from the manager’s list and it was decently priced with a 20% discount special they were running. They do NOT push the manager’s wine list at this resort like we’ve seen at some others. My husband had fettuccine noodles with a Bolognese sauce. I ordered penne but they were out so substituted tri-color rotini with tomato sauce (marinara) The anti-pasta bar is nothing special but the meal was wonderful. We had quite a wait for our food but the server let us know that ahead of time so enjoyed our wine, some bread for the anti-pasta bar and didn’t mind the wait (other than the mosquitos!) We didn’t stay for dessert here since we’d seen the choices on the anti-pasta bar (there is a dessert bar) and weren’t impressed and were already quite full.

The return guest dinner featured duck spring rolls as a starter, cream of carrot soup, coconut shrimp with buttermilk mashed potatoes. Dessert was a trio of desserts—all of which were tasty. This was the smallest return guest dinner I’ve been to with only 8 or 9 couples attending. We met Carl, the General Manager, who was quite personable and seemed to remember us when we saw him out and about the property as the week went on. We spent most of our time talking to Russell from the Soon Come Back desk. He is the sweetest guy and went out of his way to ensure we were having a great time. He brought us drinks at the pool, called our room to say hello and was helpful with booking our diamond benefit hydrotherapy session at the Red Lane Spa.

Kimono’s was good but a little slow. We had a choice of appetizers, soup and salad and then basa (fish), steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops and veggies from the teppenyaki grill. One interesting thing here is that they offer either fried or steamed rice. I prefer steamed so this was a pleasant surprise.

Friday night was a buffet in Bayside so we decided to order room service for dinner. My husband got a chicken pasta dish which was great and I got a jerk chicken sandwich with fries.

We used room service every morning for breakfast other than the one day we went to Sundowner’s. You could call in your order the night before (no hang tags like at some resorts) or call that morning. You called your order into room service rather than your butler. We had all kinds of breakfast food throughout the week but some highlights were the pancakes, bread basket with incredible croissants and pastries, bacon and omelettes. The coffee was strong and tasty and always hot. We also called room service one afternoon when we didn’t eat lunch and got a jerk chicken sandwich to share and some fries. The jerk chicken was so juicy and spicy. We both loved it.

Butler Service
Our butlers were Basil and Daron. They were a great team. Basil is quieter and reserved but very professional. We don’t have a lot of special requests but each request was noted and remembered. We asked for a shady spot at the main pool and loungers with a small table between and umbrella were reserved for us each day. Daron made mention that they are getting away from having the guests’ names on the chairs to reserve them. Our first day down, we called to find out which chairs were ours as we were used to seeing our names. Daron had reserved them with daily activities flyers and a nice setup. The next day we had a pair of shoes at our spot and called the butlers to find out where we were sitting. The shoes were left by Basil to ensure no one would take our spot! By that time, we’d figured out the deal with the reserved seats and always came down to find our pool chairs “saved.”

Daron did a lot of running around the main pool and beach. Without us asking, he brought us drinks at our seats, some with little umbrellas! He made the rounds and would pop by with some drinks at random times. Each day he worked during the day, we had pizza for lunch. He’d just drop it off with more drinks. He was on the go all day long. We didn’t ask for a single thing any day that Daron was working – he just brought it by. This is really more our style than having to ask for things. We liked the surprises! We did mention that we loved the cheese and crackers plate we had in our room at checkin to Daron. He asked if we’d like some that afternoon and what time. We said around 4pm. Each and every day at 4pm (nearly on the dot!) we’d have cheese and crackers, fruit plate and shrimp cocktail arrive at our room. What a nice touch! One mention – and it arrived daily.

We had two evenings of having our room decorated by the butler team. We request no bubble baths so we had a decorated bed with candles and a bottle of champagne on ice one night and a midnight snack the other. We also had 2 days of having chocolates brought to the room by the Soon Come Back desk.

We decided to do the catamaran tour to Rick’s and Margaritaville and Basil arranged it all through Island Routes for us. We just signed the paperwork he brought to our pool chairs and then showed up for the tour. Daron showed up at the catamaran to see us off and gave us towels for the boat.

While we are low maintenance vacationers, it was super nice to have all of these things taken care of for us during our stay. We did ask for some Ting (not served on property but a local Jamaican grapefruit based soda) and the butlers arranged to have some in our room and cooler each day.

Daytime Activities
Most of our days were overcast but this was good since we are both pretty fair and burn easily. We stayed at the main pool and participated in some activities and observed others. The main pool bar is nice and one thing that separates it from some of the other Sandals swim up bars is that it is completely shaded. Nice for rainy days or to escape the bright sunshine for a few minutes. They had pina colada and strawberry daiquiri machines which are nice since so many drinks use those as bases. There were a lot of fruit garnishes for drinks this trip.

We had fun getting to know the playmakers and participating in some of their games like Outburst, Ring Toss, Movie Trivia, How to Speak Jamaican. They do a great job of having activities without harassing everyone at the pool to participate. They didn’t have water aerobics some days due to no one wanting to participate but they didn’t shout out to the guests and beg them to participate like we’ve seen them do in the past. This was the same for all events during the day, not just aerobics.

Nighttime Activities

We loved hanging out at the piano bar (under the fans.) The interesting thing to me is that while there is a piano near the piano bar, we didn’t hear anyone other than guests play it all week. We did see a few times when someone was scheduled during dinner but never actually witnessed a piano player, so do not avoid this bar thinking it is the typical sing-along piano bar. It is really more of a beach bar. We loved Donovan and Kimloy at this bar. Kimloy makes some great shots! The bartenders make this bar the party bar each evening.

One evening, we were the judges for the Lover’s Game (Think Newlywed show) which was held at the stage in the Bayside restaurant. Another night we played Logo Trivia. After the trivia, we were treated to their big show for the week, Moulin Rouge. The show featured dancing and singing. It was quite good. After the show, we made our way to the piano bar where they had Casino Tropicale set up. This was casino night with the proceeds going to the Sandals Foundation. Jay and I each got $20 of chips. We played Texas Hold Em Poker with the playmaker Willie since he was a lot of fun. We ended the night with $102 in chips and were able to get several items in the auction. Kimloy (bartender) had wanted a hat and we got it for her as well as a knit purse in the Jamaican colors, and another tote bag. We gave our other winnings away and a nice couple from California were able to get some very small tshirts for their teen daughters at home. (They were adult Smalls but they were TINY!)

They had a huge beach party and also Jamaican night but we didn’t participate in either. They were large productions and appeared well-attended.

Overall Thoughts

We loved Sandals Negril and cannot wait to return. Our room was gorgeous and was likely the nicest room we’ve ever had at Sandals. I do think we’ll return at a less hot and humid time of the year. All of the dining options are outside other than a few tables inside at Sundowners and of course Kimonos. All of the evening entertainment and bars are outside as well. We live in the south and can get “hot and humid” for about 6 months out of the year. We do not prefer to sit outside for dinner or drinks but made the best of it and the way they have things set up with fans, and breezeways, it isn’t miserable. I do think we’d be happier to return in our winter months (December – February) before it gets really hot.

Our recent trip to Sandals Negril was our fourth trip to Jamaica and our fourth Sandals vacation. Previously we have stayed at Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Loved them both and we were not disappointed with Sandals Negril! There are things about all three that we like and we plan to make return visits to all of them.
SN is about an hour and a half ride from the airport in Montego Bay. This time around our agent arranged a private transfer for us with Reggae Tours. Kirk, our driver, was fantastic! He was really nice and spent the entire ride pointing things out and answering our questions. The vehicle was very nice, clean, and had a big cooler of ice cold Red Stripe Light and bottled water. It was a great way to start our trip!
Our first impressions of SN were that the resort was beautiful. It seemed like it was either newer or recently renovated compared to the other two resorts we've stayed at. The grounds, like all properties, were immaculate. Our room was upgraded to a beachfront walkout with concierge service. The room was not huge but for as much as we are in it, it was just fine. We loved the location and having the fridge and 24 hour room service was great. One thing I will say about this room category is that they sit on a very busy stretch of hallway. Especially in the morning. The noise did not bother us but for those looking for a private/quiet room this would not be the best choice. The AC worked great!
One thing we all agreed on was that the food at SN was the best of the three we've stayed at. Our favorite restuarants were Dinos and the Sundowner. The servers there were fantastic! We especially loved Amoy, Michael and Lensworth. We also had a great time and a great dinner at Kimonos. Crane was our chef and he is abolutely hilarious.
We spent most of our time on the beach or in the swim up bar pool. The pool is very active. Either the playmakers running an activity or a game of pool volleyball kept us entertained. The bartenders there were great! Junior, Dwayne and Khani kept us laughing the whole time.
One thing that I particularly liked about Sandals Negril was being able to walk away from the resort with no problem. We walked down to Beaches Negril one day and enjoyed the waterslides and pool activities there. By our calcuation, it's about a two drink walk.
We traveled with three other couples this time and it was a blast. Everyone stayed in a different room category, everyone ate when they wanted to, joined the activities they wanted to and we all had the option of meeting up with friends whenever we wanted to. This resort was perfect for traveling in a group.
If you are traveling to Jamaica in the future and especially if you are planning to stay at a Sandals resort, I would highly recommend that you contact Ruth DeMuth at Tripguy Travel to help with your arrangements. Ruth was awesome! For the past year she has been answering our questions and sharing her knowledge of Jamiaca. Our trip went off without a hitch and I credit that all to Ruth.
We will definitely be back to Jamaica and we will definitely return to Sandals Negril.
