We were here April 12-19. This is a smaller resort than what we are used to. The rooms were smaller, the food was good. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because of the beach vendors - by the last day, I was DONE with them. Other resorts do not allow this, (Grand Palladium in Punta Cana and Riveria Maya) so I don't know why the Riu does nothing about this problem - and it IS a problem. When you're on vacation and want rest and relaxation, you don't want to CONSTANTLY hear vendors trying to sell purses, cigarettes, pot, jewelry, jet skis, etc. This vacation cost more than we usually spend, we did not think it was worth it and won't go back. One bright spot was our private airport transfers and shopping/bar trip with Big Ship Tours. We hired Dudley because of previous reviews and were not disappointed! Dudley's email: info@bigshiptours.com

Room Tip: We originally were booked in building 2, but got there early enough because of Dudley to get a room...

The staff here is absolutely amazing. The grounds are manicured 24/7 from raking the beach to grooming the gardens. Every staff member greets you with a smile whenever you pass them. And the food...I'm a food snob from Chicago and I have to say the buffet was outstanding. It's like 12 buffets in one. There's a Jamaican area, several salad-type buffets, a dessert buffet and then many entrees along with a pasta bar and several cook-to-order areas. Oh and there's a fruit smoothie bar with about 10 different flavors. They serve everything! Fish, meat, veggies; accomodating any diet one might have. I will say that the specialty restaurants weren't anything that amazing. Great sushi in the Japanese restaurant; the steak restaurant was fair. We had 4 couples and we all preferred dinner at the main buffet restaurant; which is unheard of at an all-inclusive!
The beach was absolutely beautiful with many shades of blue and green and fairly secluded. There are a few resorts past the Palace that you can walk along the beach and see but on the other side is a market with trinkets and stuff before you get to the first resort (the lower scale Riu Club). We did their snorkel trip which was very reasonably priced and well-chaperoned. They take you to 2 different reefs to snorkel about 45 min. at each so if you take the morning one, you're back by lunch. Was surprised to see so many different fish. We have been spoiled with Cozumel but this really was pretty plentiful.
Some of the shows were great, some not so much.
Oh and back to the food; while we were there they changed the process of how to reserve the specialty restaurants twice. First they made it an hour later in the a.m. and then changed it to all day! They obviously listened to the people's suggestions.
I highly recommend this place for couples, friends and families.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon here. We both left feeling like it was the best vacation we'd ever had. It's all inclusive. The food and drink is available 24-hours. The customer service is spectacular. Even the local vendors that sell on the beach are friendly. I highly recommend it.

We just got back this Saturday, April 22, 2012, from the Riu Tropical Bay. About the ONLY complaint we would have about our stay is that it rained a little bit every day. We had previously been in Jamaica in February and November, and didn't experience so much rain then. Talking to one of the locals, he said that it was typical "pre-summer" weather with rain nearly every day. But the rain was brief, and once the skies cleared, the sun was hot whether it was 10:00 am or 5:00 pm. As for the hotel, we had a beach view room, and our friends had a beach front room - both views were spectacular! My advice to those who request a beach front room is to ask for second or third floor rooms since the first floor rooms have walls on the terrace, and in order to see the beach, you have to stand up. On the 2nd and 3rd floor rooms, you have banisters that allow you to sit and see the beach from your terrace. ALL the personnel were so friendly and accomodating, especially Jodeen in the lobby bar and Mario in the dining room. Buffet food is excellent, although somewhat repetitious. The smoothies at breakfast ROCK. And the Omega 3 rolls (covered with poppy & sesame seeds) were so good, that I woke up at 2:30 one morning craving them - couldn't wait til 7 AM to get one!! The beach is absolutely gorgeous! The water is so clean, the bottom so sandy, and not too deep too fast. Of course you have the locals on the beach to deal with, selling everything from hats, purses, cigars, and peanuts, and strolling musicians willing to serenade you. No pressure from them, and we actually spent a great deal of time learning about the "real" Jamaica & it's customs and beliefs by talking to them. (A couple were a bit bold by asking us to get them food & drinks from the hotel). We highly recommend visiting the lobster grill a short distance down the beach towards the Riu Negril - $20 for probably the best lobster you'll ever eat. Also, take the glass bottom boat tour by the lobster grill, and ask for Robert & Martin - they will show you some of the best snorkelling we've had in the Caribbean. Our mini bar wasn't filled as frequently as we expected, and request Red Stripe, or you'll get El Presidente. The beds ARE a bit hard, but that's the way we like them!...All in all this beautiful hotel & it's employess make for a wonderfully relaxing & enjoyable vacation....we would go back in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Building 4 is close to all the action (restaurants, pool, spa, beach) - a good choice if you're...

This resort is located in a bay, so the water is very calm. Bring a floatation device and grab a drink and relax in the bay. The resort is smaller than typical Riu Palaces, but very nice. The food and drinks are very good, the 24-hour bar was great...Try all the different martinis. The RIU Negril was within walking distance on the beach, so it's easy to visit if you want. You can enjoy all the amientieis there as well. There is basically no nightlife at this resort at all, so if that's what you are looking for you won't find it here, but the other resort does have a disco. This is a great resort to visit if you are looking to just chill on the beach and relax. The staff was great, all the locals were very nice and friendly.

Room Tip: If you need to know the time...bring your own clock, some rooms had them and some didn't. If yo...
