Absolutely Perfect Honeymoon

Review of The Caves
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 Apr 2011
My husband and I just returned from a 7 night stay at The Caves. We had high expectations and they were met.

When we first arrived, we were a little concerned by the quiet. It's a big difference from NYC, but within an hour we were completely settled in and relaxed. We met a few other great couples and it was a pleasure spending time with them. We anticipated leaving the resort to do some other things in Jamaica, but decided against it. There is really no reason to leave! Just sit back, relax, and take it all in.

My husband snorkeled with Paul and said it's a must! We also kayaked which was nice- we were able to see the other resorts on the cliffs. The Caves is by far the most impressive!

The staff was incredible. They were very attentive and actually had time to talk to you. While we were there I had an issue with my nail polish. Our housekeeper saw me trying to fix the polish and she actually brought nail polish remover from her house for me the next day! It was so sweet and thoughtful!

You MUST get a massage- we had 2, and they were great! And enjoy the food. We ordered the combo for most of the meals and were pleased. Our cave dinner was so romantic and unique. Where else do you get to eat in a cave lined with candles?

Bottom Line- GO! It was worth every penny and we WILL be back!

My husband and I travelled to The Caves for our one year anniversary in April 2011. We knew we wanted to go to the Caribbean and through much research decided that The Caves was the best value for our money. Yes, you'll pay more than at a typical Jamaica all-inclusive (Beaches or Sandals, etc) but you will also leave behind everything you hate about Caribbean travel and all-inclusive resorts (ie: bugs, bad food, cheap liquor, annoying couples and loud, bratty kids). The Caves' staff made it clear they wanted to spoil us. One night about half the resort (it only sleeps 24 people) wanted them to open the Rum Bar and even though it wasn't scheduled to be open that evening, they opened it for us. The bar is literally always open; if you can't find a staffmember you're more than welcome to make your own drink and each room is also stocked with rum, vodka, wine, soda, juice, water and snacks. There is no mini-bar fee. They mean ALL-INCLUSIVE. If you go, make sure you ask before you book about the specials. I found out after I booked that because I reserved five nights I got free couples massage (amazing and not the typical free quickie massage). The views speak for themselves. Every minute from waking up to a view of the ocean to breakfast on the cliffs to an open air spa to snorkeling with starfish and stingrays feels like your dream vacation. Even my husband, the most tense person on the planet managed to relax.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for such a wonderful write up on Trip Advisor.

All the staff here at The Caves are passionate about what they do, they, myself, and all of us love this hotel like it is our very own!

We look forward to welcoming you back soon - and encourage all our reviewers not to wait too long to return!

Our mission statement, which is to create "a home away from home vibe" with fantastic service, which is unobtrusive, as well as to use the freshest ingredients in our home style cooking, is what we continue to strive for....as Chris Blackwell says "great hotels are where you want to live".

Thank you and see you soon!

One love, one heart...

My husband and i went for our 6 year anniversary and - did we have an amazing time. We met two other couples - one that had been here 9 times and another that were newly weds that were newbies like us.

I was wearing a boot because I had sprained my ankle. Did it stop me from enjoying this place? NO!!

The food was amazing, the property was amazing and best of all - the bed was amazing. The staff was really nice and accomodating which you don't see in most countries.

Please don't question spending the money to see this place. There isn't a bad seat in the house - EVER. No need to fight over spots or anything. They are all beautiful - and by the way - there aren't ever enough people to fight over spots. We stayed 5 nights and met so many neat people and never felt over crowded.

If you are looking for a place that says no shoes, no shirt lots of service, you found it. I brought way too many clothes, and never wore my shoes. We left our room in the am without locking up a thing and felt safe enough to leave it.

If you have any questions about going to this place - put them aside. It may not be the ritz, but it's rustic and amazing for its simplicity

We stayed in the Sea Turtle which has photos on trip advisor. It was more than expected. Ocean views from the bed, shower, and front door.

You will not be let down

We had a recent 5 day stay at the Caves. As a religious reader of trip advisor I felt after reading the reviews this place would be awesome. For the most part it didn't disappoint. Here's my take in a no particular rambling order.
Pros:
We arranged transportation from the hotel from the airport. We thought it was very good. We got delayed 2 hours in customs and there was our driver waiting for us. Check in was nice and easy and the first drink on arrival was stout. With nothing to eat my wife was getting tipsy fast!

The views are stunning and the property is every bit as beatufil as it looks on the website.

The staff does a wonderful job. Servers are friendly. We thought the food was fantastic. Some of the best we've had. Had the combo for every meal. Something different every day/night. Wife loved the dirty bananas. We had a private cave dinner and the staff does a wonderful job making this a very memorable experience.

Paul, who is the lifeguard/cliff diving expert, was fantastic. He took us snorkeling and was always around to offer help. Hats off to him. The cliff jumping/diving was awesome.

The Spa is open air and really nice. I believe it was Michelle whom my wife "fell in love" with. She did a remarkable job. We had booked a couples cave massage but was weathered out to large waves crashing in. I'm sure we would have liked that.

I encourage you to "get to know" your fellow Caves guests. To Eric and Leigh (sp?) what a neat couple. Joy, my wife sure enjoyed your company!

We toured the villa and it looks really cool!

Cons: Not many here by the way.
The outdoor hot tub was not working when we were there.
The private hot tub was neat but I think it needs updated. Jets don't seem to work very well.
Our room was very clean but was disappointed on how many times we were interrupted in our room by the cleaning service. Several small/private places we stay will only have maid service come when you have left the room.
Room service for breakfast had to be ordered the night before. I didn't like to have to make a schedule.
We booked the Stardust for complete privacy. It just wasn't as private as I had hoped. When tour buses stop on Wednesday and Saturday you have "several" guests right outside of you door. When I stepped out onto our deck with not much on, I'm sure the tourists were more traumatized by the incident than I was. Just to your South is the Lighthouse. There are several dogs on that property that must sleep most of the day as they howl most of the night. For this reason alone I would probably book a different room. Steps in the Stardust to your room are narrow. I also found out I prefer a bathroom on the same floor as my bedroom.

Would I reccomend the Caves to others? ABSOLUTELY! I probably had unrealistic expectations on this trip. Our last 2 trips to Mexico we were so "blown" away it probably wasn't fair for this one! By the way I took the time to visit another property called Jakes that is owned by the same company. It's located on the South Coast. It looks really cool. We might head there next.

My husband and I just got back from The Caves. We were celebrating our honeymoon. Overall we had a very nice time at The Caves. The food is GREAT (the best ever was lobster and steak night), drinks are good and the staff is friendly. Paul and Imron are especially awesome and friendly. We stayed in Two Birds- the outdoor shower was awesome and the jungle view was beautiful. I can honestly say that I didn't really miss the ocean view since all we had to do was step outside to see the ocean. If you are on a budget I would definitely recommend booking Two Birds as opposed to the more expensive ocean view properties. Caves dinner in #2 was awesome... something you need to experience in real life as pictures don't do it justice. You MUST watch the sunset each evening... amazing.
There is room for a few improvements, though minor, they would have made our stay a bit more enjoyable. Many of the umbrellas were on their death bed, and when the wind came through staff asked us to close them. My husband had to stay out of the sun due to a recent surgery, so closing the umbrella forced us to go back inside. Again, minor, but if the umbrellas were in better shape we would have been able to stay out like we wanted. Another suggestion is for the Caves to have an activity listing. Sometimes there were events held at the Sands (like a cocktail hour) that my husband and I didn't know about until after the event. The Caves also offers yoga, sunsets in the hot tub, snorkeling, etc. Staff tells you everything when you first arrive, but it's so much information to remember so it would be nice if it was written down in the room somewhere for us to refer to throughout the week. I do think the Caves is a bit overpriced. I do think you are paying Ritz Carlton luxury prices for a 3 to 4 star facility.
When booking at the Caves you need to know what you are getting into. It is extremely quiet- we were in bed by 9 pm each night. There really isn't a lot to do- we ate and drank a LOT, sun bathed, napped and read lots and lots of novels. We were there for 6 days but would have been content with 4. We noticed most couples stayed 3-4 days and I think that would have been enough... after 4 days it got to be a little boring. I would recommend The Caves to those looking to recharge their batteries and to escape from technology and normal life.
