The Hibiscus Lodge is exactly as presented in the reviews...a well-maintained old-school resort property, maybe a little past its prime, but comfortable in every way and a beautiful seaside setting. Lovely varnished dark wood in the lobby area and beautiful gardens make it feel like you're back in a more refined time. They were renovating the lobby and entrance, which looked a little tired, and the Swiss owner is clearly revamping for a fresher look. The renovations were in no way bothersome, and the rooms have all apparently been recently repainted and refreshed. We had an ocean-view room, with a queen bed and a lovely private balcony. The room was simple, but with a spacious bathroom, a couple of chairs, cable TV and a fridge. Other rooms look out over a small pool area which is pretty, and generally quiet. Breakfast was included, and offered omelettes, eggs and meats, fresh fruit, etc. served in the dining room which is a covered terrace, also with spectacular views. There is a small beach area, but this is really just to access the water for snorkeling rather than to lie out. All the big resort catamaran trips moor off this area for snorkeling, and it's amusing to watch these party boats sail back and forth with the reggae and rum punch obviously flowing! The last ones leave at 5 PM (like clockwork!), so the sunset time is peaceful and quiet. If you are looking for something calmer and quieter tah the all-inclusive places, this is a good bet!

Didn't know what to expect but as soon as I got my room with the sea view, I was happy.
The hotel is going through renovations (January 2017). Not much noise so didnt even notice.
Room wasn't huge but a big closet and ok size bathroom with new fittings, and a good size sea view balcony with chairs, table and a lounger - I was sold.
That's what I wanted/needed, and I got it.
Quiet place. Outside area for breakfast, lunches and dinners - what more do you need?

My favourite place was the bar. With swing chairs, great view; fairly quiet. And a friendly girl behind the bar (name starts with T, cant remember it properly now and don't want to get it wrong). Great cocktails and advice on cocktails from her.

Other staff, as in restaurant and the reception, also very friendly and polite.

Thanks for making my stay a pleasurable one.

Ah, and the wifi - huge bonus! really good signal thanks to the router on the balcony. That was awesome!

Room Tip: Room 14 - with balcony facing the sea

Ocho Rios is a must see destination while in Jamaica, but not an especially enjoyable town to browse around as one is constantly hassled by people wanting money. Don't count on a handshake or an offer to give you directions being genuine as a monetary gift is sometimes expected. Another problem is that street food vendors sometimes charge you much higher prices than the locals. This town was not always like this. I visited in 1983 & felt comfortable with walking the streets & there was far less traffic than today. The most popular traditional local attraction is Dunn River Falls which is still spectacular & beautiful & a must see on any trip to Jamaica. Another place that hasn't changed much is the Hibiscus Lodge. This resort is a beautiful romantic oasis near the center of town. It feels like a remote location with a spectacular jungle covered cliff with a topside view over a little bay protected by reefs. A stairway leads down to the water where one can swim or snorkel. The restaurant at the top is called the Almond Tree & is where the included breakfast takes place. It also has a pool, gardens & a tennis court. It is an extremely popular location for weddings. I have never stayed at a hotel with so many channel selections on the TV. I was even able to get our local Los Angeles weather forecast (Channel 5)!

We stayed at the Hibiscus for six nights in early December during a period of very unsettled weather occupying one of the superior Ocean View rooms. We were keen to use a more local hotel avoiding the excesses and costs of the AI establishments close by.

On arrival the whole of the main office/reception area was in chaos as it was undergoing a major reconstruction of the access facilities. Whilst these things happen there was no forewarning and we had a clear sense of "that is how it is, put up with it".

Our room was very good with a number of +/- points: it had a good comfortable bed with plenty of pillows and sheets. The bathroom was very good with a strong shower and plenty of hot water at all times. The balcony was really nice and spacious with great sea views - definitely worth the extra. The refrigerator was a useful bonus - not featured on the web site but very useful indeed. All good points.

On the downside: there was no extra deadlock or chain on the door which is most unusual in any hotel. The door to the balcony was secured with the help of two bolts - neither fitted properly due to being poorly fitted (I could have sorted them both out in ten minutes with a screwdriver so why were they fitted so poorly? Reference in the room literature is made to the security box - there isn't one. There is an ice bucket but no instructions where to get ice (no ice tray in the refrigerator). Worst of all there was hardly any storage space - just two small drawers and a shoddy wardrobe. It was a large room with plenty of space into which to fit a set of drawers. Attention to detail would make these rooms very good indeed.

(We were in Room 27 which is right on the end. A disused building next door has very poor drainage from the roof so, when it rained heavily {which it did} the overflow from that roof poured straight into our balcony. Maybe avoid R27 in poor weather?)

There was pretty good WiFi most of the time although it was intermittent when there was a storm - understandably so.

The restaurant was reasonable, nothing more. It advertises itself as one of the better restaurants in the area, using fresh local ingredients yet always served fries and vegetables from frozen; surely fresh are available from the market 50m down the road. As with other restaurants in Jamaica many of the dishes come with sauces that overpower the flavour of the main ingredients so we would ask for plain wherever possible which improved the offering significantly, in our view of course. The service was friendly and helpful at all times but the menu was fairly unimaginative. Breakfast was very good, however, with great coffee and fresh at all times. Snacks and sandwiches are expensive which was not good when we were marooned by torrential rain.

The position is fairly good - a ten minute walk into OR although we were unsure of the wisdom of walking into town in the evenings.

Overall it is a good hotel which could be very good with just a little more attention to detail. It is good value for money and if we were to visit Ocho Rios again it is where we would choose to stay.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are good, avoid 27 in heavy rains.
