Although we had been warned about the traders in the crafts market we visited and spent about an hour there. If you can cope with the pushy stall holders and be determined to buy what you go there for you will be able to pick up a some beautiful things - but you must bargain hard with the traders.

Once you arrive at the Hip strip you have to walk out of it pass margaretaville where u see a view of the ocean, keep walking and you come to a park. Walk through the park and walk a little further and on your left up a hill are the market stalls.

The stalls sell a lot of the same items, some stalls have better quality items than others. All the Jamaicans want you to look in their stalls, but they are fine if you say no or don't buy from them. This is their livelihood and don't get many tourists there. You do have to haggle as some of the items are overpriced or you pay the same price if you were at home. Take American dollars with you.

We loved seeing the culture at the stalls and loved the atmosphere there. It was just what we were after. It was very safe there too. Lovely people. We were able to buy some presents and memorabilia there too. Definitely worth a visit. The huts a really cute and colourful. Very Jamaican.

The crafts are pretty much the same in every stall and the same as you might see at your resort if they have a day where they allow craftspeople to come in and set up. The prices were competitive but not bargains, even after haggling. I got the same prices for the same products at the resort craft day and in a number of shops as well as shops at the airport. What those other sources did not give us was the pressure of the vendors to buy. I did not enjoy the experience. I thought it would be similar to say, Calle Ocho in Playa del Carmen, but these folks were much more aggressive in their approach. There were times when they were almost physical with each other in the attempt to "poach" shoppers from one another. They WILL physically take hold of your arm to prevent you from leaving their stall. It does remind you that poverty is very real in Jamaica. I would not go there again, especially with my 8yo granddaughter who was actually a bit afraid. In short, the prices were not significant enough over other sources selling EXACTLY the same things to pay the "shopping tour" price and put up with the jostling. I did not purchase anything here that I couldn't have gotten just as cheaply and much easer at the airport!

A good place to find locally crafted souvenirs, but a bad place to bring a family.

The shopkeepers are aggressive and will physically block the exit once you are in the store, verbally trying to sell you useless items for high prices.

My fiancée found this environment uncomfortable and we did not enjoy it as much as we thought. I ended up purchasing a $10.00 handmade beanie hat, but it was not worth the hassle of winding through a maze of vendors eyeing tourists like prey.

We have been to local markets in other areas of the world, but this has to be one of the most pushy and aggressive ones in Jamaica.

If you enjoy bartering for a bargain this is the place for you. We were there early on a Tue. morning and were the only ones in the place. We were greeted by just about all of the people selling items. We had a great time bidding on items and buying. I was looking for for a Jamaican knitted shoulder pouch, there was only one in the whole place made by the seller. We had fun meeting and talking with everyone. It is a good place to immerse yourself into the culture.
