A HOTEL TO REMEMBER
During our many years living in Haiti from 1968 to 1982 we were in the enviable position of writing about the country's touristic and business life while publishing the English-language tourist newspaper "News of Haiti".
We have many friends there and one of them is Walter Bussenius, known as Walkie, owner of the Mont Joli Hotel.
During our many stays there, one of which was with the US Secret Service during a stay there by Walter Mondale's son, we were always impressived with the cleanliness, the exellent food and the very reasonable rates.
Walkie was a literal fountain of knowledge and helped us discover beautiful Labadie nearby when it was unknown by the cruiseships; he arranged visits to the Citadel and Isle de la Tortue, the 17th centruy bucanneer stronghold island.
If you are ever thinking of visiting the strange and mystical country of Haiti, that will forever cling to you when you leave, tyou must consider the northern city of Cap Haitien, and within in it on a hillside, the lovely Mont Joli and our good friend Walkie Bussenius.
One day soon we shall return to laze around their pool, sample their food and hospitality, and perhaps meet some of the characters - the real tourists - who make it there.
If you read this Walkie, here's to old times.
