I’m a bit puzzled by the less than enthusiastic reviews for this hotel. It is undoubtedly the best hotel on Guadeloupe (or Martinique for that matter). I thought it was excellent. Apparently, La Toubana is now reaching for its fifth star, and it very much shows.

This hotel’s setting is, simply put, stunning. It may be one of the best settings I have seen in a hotel — and I’ve seen a lot of resort hotels. Pictures literally do not do justice to either the hotel or its site. It’s lovely.

Likewise, the bungalows are beautiful, and almost laughably spacious when one considers the private outdoor space. I heard that the entire hotel has been renovated this year, which may explain prior negative reviews. The renovations show. We had a sea-view bungalow that was spotless and fresh, with an enormous, furnished patio overlooking the Caribbean. You really couldn’t ask for more.

I also found service to be very good - particularly for the French West Indies. At reception, the restaurants, and the pool the hotel eagerly sent out English-speaking employees who were uniformly charming. I recall specifically Gaelle at the restaurant, Judy at reception, and Nicolas at the pool bar. In fact, Nicolas may be the best bartender I have encountered, and I have seen more than a few! A mixologist who is cool, funny, and knows how to drop in and out of conversations - a rare combination. In short, the employees of this hotel try, hard, to give you a great experience, and they generally succeed.

My only complaint, is that this hotel, like other French West Indies hotels (excluding, of course, St Barth) has “towel cards.” Why? For some reason very expensive FWI hotels need to track their beach towels as if their guests were thieves, to the inconvenience of those guests. They don’t this in St. Barth (or, in my experience, at any luxury hotel in the English, Spanish, or Portuguese-speaking world). If La Toubana really wants if 5th star, maybe it should take a lesson from the rest of the world.

All in all though, a great place! I highly recommend.

The location, on a bluff overlooking the sea, with great views from the bar, dining room and bungalow terraces, is wonderful. There’s a nice beach restaurant as well. But, the rooms have a vestibule where the large closet is, and there’s a light that automatically goes on whenever you enter. You cannot turn it off. So, if you go in there in the night, the light goes on and stays on for 10+ minutes. Annoying. There are heavy sliding doors to the bathroom that do not block noise and light — again, annoying. The gym is well equipped. Nice (excessively expensive) spa. Good breakfast. The pools are shallow and are more for splashing than swimming. There is a lovely private beach, man made, but it’s small and bound by a breakwater, beyond which it’s Rough. Great lounging areas there. OK service. In sum, a good place to stay, but has some flaws.

La Toubana was a nice place to stay on Guadeloupe. We enjoyed our time here. The reception workers are pleasant and helpful and if pressed they will get done what you ask. We rented a villa and it was clean, neat and had beautiful views from the balcony with our own private pool. Food was very good at dinner and lunch, breakfast is very basic. Dinner service was good, breakfast service barely existent. They have live music playing in the evening and they’re enjoyable to listen to. The beach was well run and nicely set up and lunch down there was very good. Although the bar there was not set up for much of any drink orders. Maybe bottled wines but not quality liquor. The gym area is old and not cleaned, but they have lots of equipment and options. It’s through the Spa and walking through there was smelly, dark and damp. Wouldn’t recommend spa treatments at all. Late afternoon cocktails by pool were delightful and a nice part of day. Highly recommend renting a car for a day and driving to botanical garden and zoo. Fun days trips! Roadways around Guadeloupe are easy to drive and get around. This is our third trip to Guadeloupe and enjoy the island. Although bring euros and prepare to speak French. Most don’t know English well.

We just got back from a fantastic trip to Guadeloupe! Although we didn't stay at La Toubana, we had dinner there and spent a day at their beautiful beachside lagoon on their fantastically comfortable lounge chairs. Food and beverage was excellent and reasonably priced, considering the quality and location! Go enjoy their hospitality!

We ate lunch at this hotel, although we were not guests at the hotel. The food and service were excellent and the prices were reasonable for this type of meal. We looked around the grounds, with beautiful views.
Saint Anne is very congested but this place is on a hill and provides an escape from the crowd.
