We went with a guide, which wasn't necessary. The path is clear, but needs a bit of maintenance as there as some very muddy spots. A walking stick is useful. The path is narrow, and very steep so those with a fear of heights or any health condition may not do well. The views are breathtaking, and the sections where you walk over roots are airy and give you a rush!

We visited the Grand Etang National Park. We arrived at 3PM and the booth for fees was already closed along with the historical house. The fee isn't very expensive for entry, so hire a driver or rent a car vs. paying the tour operators.

The walk up the hill was nice through the tropical settings. The drop in temperature is significant from the lower levels. Up on top there is a platform you can access and have a great 360 degree view.

There are plenty of tourist junk shops here, save your money. Didn't see a monkey around.

Unfortunately the weather wasn't optimal for our hike of Qua Qua -- overcast and kinda rainy. But, we embarked anyway. Overall the trail is in good shape. Steep in places. Quite slippery at times (rain!), so I highly recommend hiking shoes. Though we didn't get much in the way of views, we enjoyed the meander through the Grand Etang ecosystem and the lush, verdant foliage.

The Mt.Qua-Qua trail is sometimes rated as among the best in the Caribbean. I cannot judge that, but it certainly is a very scenic hike along a good trail that however needs good attention as it mostly follows a narrow ridge with steep drops to both sides. IIn case of rain the trail can become slippery. The starting point can be reached by bus (#6 from St.George, 4 EC$). Get off a Grand Etang. A signpost (before you enter the busy tourist ground) indicates the start of the trail. It took me just over 45 minutes one way. A guide is not necessary, but he can point out plants, views atc.

The hike requires a degree of physical fitness. Ensure you have good walking shoes, water and snacks and poles if required.

My husband and I did the hike with a guide in tow. The path to the top was straight forward but the benefits of our guide Vaughan Francis (tadventure@hotmail.com) provided us with information on the surrounding geography as well as the local flora, fauna and wildlife.

Prior to starting the hike, Vaughan provided us with a safety talk re the terrain we were about to tackle, this proved invaluable as the trail is steep, muddy, slippery in places and narrow. It is pretty much a continuous trek up for 1.5 miles, then back down.Guide books have stated this is not a hike to do if you have vertigo, I’m a sufferer, at no point did I have any issues.

The hike up Mount Qua Qua provides stunning views of the surrounding areas, particularly of the Grand Etang lake. You pretty much get great views of the south of the island. A real sense of achievement once you’ve completed the hike. Overall, the trail is well maintained and straight forward to follow should you wish to do it without the services of a guide, but I would recommend engaging one.
