Description: Expanded and refurbished in September 2009, The Aquarium Restaurant has a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere, right on Magazine Beach with stunning ocean views. Fresh cocktails or lunch under palm trees, fine dining, relaxed lounging… a breezy dining room with two seawater aquariums, bamboo railings and leather couches, a river-stone lounge bar with funky rattan furniture, a new Koi-pond and waterfall from the natural cliff. Local fish carvings and 3D paintings reflect the tropical underwater scenery.

Since the Aquarium is in the Maca Bana resort out past the airport, we took a day trip to see how to get there and the parking situation. When you think you are at the airport, the road continues to a roundabout. Continue through the roundabout, around the curve and the Maca Bana is on the right a short distance (about 500 meters).

After entering, there are about 10 spaces on a very sharp incline next to the restaurant. There is also space along the road if the spaces are full.

Wine area - That caught our eyes with their glass-enclosed display with the different countries and regions labeled. We did not have wine, but the display was impressive to us.

The staff was friendly but okay with service. Greeted and sat promptly, we saw about four other tables. Interesting how 80% of the guests are on their cell phones constantly :) Several staff members appear to work together to get drinks, take orders, and bring the food. What we found unusual: (1) a server had to come back since one of the items was no longer available, (2) the servers did not clean the dirty table next to us for our time there, (3) no one checked back to see how the meal was until time to clear the table and we had nothing to drink.

The food is what makes the place. One article stated that it has the best kitchen on the island. To that, we agree. Everything we ate was among the best flavors AND presentations that we experienced during our stay. Different takes on indigenous and traditional dishes make the grade for taste. We opted for the catch of the day and a vegetarian Aquarium Taster. Both excellent! I'm still impressed how they made an ordinary side garden salad look so pretty.

Recommendation - do NOT eat lunch the day you go to the Aquarium. That was our downfall. We were not that hungry and wanted to try some of their seafood combinations and desserts. Another time...

The view - since it was dark we could not see too much but could hear the water. The ambiance is dim with much wooden surfaces. Comfortable seating and an adorable black and white cat!

My grilled shrimp was very good, the mahi mahi was bland. It was Easter, so they were short-staffed, but we had a different server at our table all night. It felt a bit commercialized. It wasn’t a bad experience but also not my favorite.

Great view. Great service. Food was above average. Hard to find!
Pricey for island food. Walking distance from airport.

We heard the food was good and the service poor. We were pleasantly surprised that the service was very good and the food was in deed excellent. Good overall experience.

We ate here a few times during our visit in March. Food is good but the service is extremely slow and careless. Getting a refill of water or salt/ pepper shaker is very difficult. The staff doesn’t seem to really care about serving you. Busy location with lots of cruiseship passengers coming to the beach. Sunday barbecue with live music is fun! Seafood and desserts are quite tasty.
