“Been there a few times - wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2012

Located in a private island, this is the place for a calm and relaxing vacation. Be advised that there is not much to do here. It's really about full-detaching from reality and enjoying your vacation. Internet is available near the main building only.

Just returned from Cayo Levantado. Hotel is very nice, rooms are excellent and a bit ovesized which makes you feel at home. The gardens are manicured constrantly, both pools and outside SPA are clean and give you a sence of privacy not crowded at all as guests are spread all over the island. Hotel beaches are quite nice, groomed every morning but rather small which does not give you the opportunity to take long walks. The public beach is the largest but not worth your stay. It is dirty, full of plastic bottle sand debris. The beach chairs are outdated, some broken and dirty.
Luggage coordination was the poorest experience we've ever experienced. Lost bags on the way in and luggage leaving the hotel with the shuttle on the dock without the guests. We had to go on the dock to recover our luggage. We recommend highly the stay

Room Tip: Use upper levels in the main lodge for ocean view

We travelled to this small island in march tru mark.wilson@flightcentre.ca ,already dealing with this travel agency proved to be good idea, thay took care of booking us into a villa which is a must they said and it war right.Very privite settings close to pools ,jaccuzi two privite beaches. Can get wi fi even by the poolside listening to your favotire sat radio while sunbathing.
Water around island are very clear so snorkling gear is a must.Never never crowdy since resort isvery small, got the feeling of real slow relaxing atmosphere like never before,(have travel extensivelly tru carrbn and latn amer. ).Food beats the best cruises and drinks ,whatever you like including brand names .Very frendly staff.Planning to go back there in 6 months for 10 days.

My husband and I just got back from one week at the Cayo. We found the grounds beautiful and the rooms were very nice and clean (no bugs the entire time we were there).

Our take on travelling is that when you spend a lot of money, your expectations are much higher than when you don't. You anticipate there being a reason the resort/tour operators are charging an arm and a leg and the reviews led us to believe that it would be worth it.

We spent $3600 for the two of us for one week (which was including the Air Canada rebate of $250.00 a person for booking with them during a promotion). So without the AC reduction, it would have been over $4000. To put it in perspective, in the past we've usually spent about $2300 - $2800 combined on other resorts for a week, and have generally been pleased.

Here is what we found...

The food - We found breakfast to be delicious. The cook will make you whatever eggs you want and they taste delicious made on the grill. They had a nice selection of pastries (if you eat those for breakfast) and fresh fruit, yogurt and breads. Lunch was repetitive (same thing every day), but we would always be able to find something to eat. They had these delicious wraps in the "healthy corner" which were very good. My husband didn't really like the lunches because he expected more based on other Gran Bahias we've gone to (this is the fourth one). They didn't have the signature delicious hamburgers they had at other resorts (the burgers were dry and stale tasting and were not made to order on the grills, even at the beach buffeet). Dinner was a problem at the buffet. There were four out of the seven nights we were there when we couldn't find anything to eat. Each night they would do a theme and would also have bland chicken and beef, in case you didn't like any of the "theme" dishes. We ate the bland chicken and beef on those four evenings. FYI, Mexican theme night at the buffet was amazing! If you can, don't miss this one as it was really fantastic. We did not try any of the a-la-cartes as most people said they weren't anything special - but the one everyone seemed to like the best was Don Pablo. The one evening we could get a reservation there was a giant thunderstorm and we weren't going to go out in it to get to the restaurant.

The rooms - As I mentioned were beautiful. We stayed in a junior suite which was located in the main building (the buffet was on the lobby floor) so when it was raining we didn't have to go outside to eat. We had a gorgeous view and would often sit on the balcony, read and relax - with a view of the ocean to our right. The bed...hard as a rock!!! It reminded me of the hardness of a hospital bed and would literally hurt if you turned over to sleep on your side. I don't know what they were going for with this - but many people complained about it. The bathroom was lovely, but no privacy except for the toilet which was closed off by a separate door. The wall from the bedroom to the bathroom was clear glass, so you could see your partner getting ready to shower or brushing their teeth. Not a problem if you're travelling with your spouse - but I don't know how this would work if you're going with friends. The rooms are also very dimly lit and there was a shortage of outlets - so it's a good idea to bring extention cords and/or splitters if you have laptops/hair appliances to plug in.

The beach - the one beautiful beach on the resort is public. This means that local vendors are able to set up there and sell you things. This is also a port for cruises who stop there and some excursions bring people from other resorts to that beach. We just stepped one foot onto the public beach and the local vendors were quick to start with their cat calls and their "looky looky" immediately! I don't enjoy this on my vacations so we did not go back to the public beach. After the shows the public beach has a disco and there are drinks included for the Cayo residents, but during the day Cayo visitors must pay for drinks or snacks on the public beach. We know a few people who got ripped off buying trinkets, jewellery or even food, so buyer beware.

The private beaches were ok, but must smaller in comparison. There are two near each other and one is reefed off so you can go swimming - but we found it quite crowded. The other is not crowded at all, but not reefed off, so pretty rough waters. It was beautiful to just sit there and watch the waves crashing and take a beach walk - but not for swimming.

The hotel staff - we found them to be very friendly and helpful. Even the front desk was nice and welcoming (although we didn't complain to them, so we don't know how they would handle that). Many of the staff do not speak English, but if you don't have issues to discuss with them, they will understand simple requests in English and they work very hard. The cleaning staff in the rooms was amazing and the room was spotless every day.

We did not go on any excursions as we were there to really relax from our hectic work schedules and we weren't interested in the few (four) that Air Canada vacations was offering. Other tour operators offer many more options for excursions.

All in all, we may return to this resort, if the price were to drop substantially. However, we did not feel we got what we paid for.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a Junior Suite and ask to be on a higher floor preferrably with a view of the water. As...

I travelled to GBPCL with my sister in mid March. We stayed for 7 days. Our room was a junior suite superior in a villa. Before I left, fellow TA members provided a wealth of information on the message boards and through private messages and I would like to thank all of you for your help.
The resort did not disappoint. The location is beautiful, the rooms are large, clean and lovely. The service for the most part was excellent (98% great, 1% good, 1% bad). Management was friendly and seemed genuinely concerned that all was well. Any issues we had were promptly addressed.
We had a lovely ocean view from our balcony only slightly obscured by trees. Our proximity to the ocean was great, it was just below us which allowed us to easily hear the crashing waves. The pelicans also enjoyed resting in the trees in front of our villa.
I would have preferred to have two beds, but I knew when booking that this was not offered for our room category. The king size bed we had was huge (I think it is a California king?) and could have easily fit 4 people. I had read the beds were extremely firm, but this was not the case with ours. It was very comfortable. I do wish the large window separating the bedroom and the bathroom had a pull down shade. I was ready for this though and brought a shower curtain and clips which helped with privacy.
The resort grounds are extremely lush and very well kept. Groundskeepers and cleaners were always at work keeping everything neat and tidy. As many have said, the grounds are quite hilly and there is a fair bit of walking, so people with mobility issues may have some problems getting around.
We did have issues getting reservations at the a la carte restaurants even though we tried booking the day they opened the week's reservations (Sunday). This was not big deal for us as we quite enjoyed both the main buffet and the beach pool buffet. The main one has a different theme every night with lots of selection. They also have someone offering you a specialty drink as you walk in the front entrance. The main buffet also has a vegetarian corner with 5-6 hot selections. I was quite impressed with this as I usually have difficulty finding vegetarian options at all inclusives. If you want a la carte reservations, line up as soon as guest services opens or try to book them before you leave.
We visited the two private beaches almost everyday. The windy beach was quite windy most days but had far less people. The calm beach was more crowded, but we never had difficulty finding a palapa even arriving at noon. There is also a fair amount of room so you are never "sardined". The water was very nice on the calm side. It is soft sand nearer to the shore but then there is some rock and coral so it might be good to bring watershoes to go further in (there were also some sea urchins).
The beach drink service was also excellent except on our last day when it was non-existent. I'm not sure why. It was raining in the morning so perhaps they were had fewer staff working at the beach even though it was sunny in the afternoon. The rest of the week there was always someone coming around to see if you wanted anything. They offered a large drink selection with several types and brands of liquor.
We did one excursion while we were there, it was whale watching with Whale Samana and it was an experience of a lifetime (I've posted a separate review for this).
Overall we had a fantastic time at this resort. It did live up to the rave reviews. I would happily return here and highly recommend it!
